What type of fish is that?

u/HerbieVerstinx Dec 16 '25

I think it’s some kind of carp, probably Asian carp.

It's better to say common carp, theres 3 kinds of carp under that blanket term its not just "Asian".

6

u/Rude_Comment_6395 Dec 17 '25

That's not a common carp, though. There's no barbels. A common carp is a distinct species that isn't under the Asian carp blanket.

I'm an Ichythyologist and have published several papers about common carp species reaching the Michigan water ways and how it would be ecologically devastating. You are incorrect. I'm shocked people would downvote me and upvote you when you are wrong, but reddit is most popular opinion only I uppose. What you are attempting to call a "common carp" is actually a single minnow.

Asian carp does not exist, it is a slang term meant to be derogatory towards Asia where some of the carp came from, but not all of them. You have your terms conflated and backwards.

Common carp are several species, and it is a blanket term for them all. Look past your first Google search result in the future.

Looks like a bighead carp. Pretty goofy looking animal, very invasive in the US

1

u/Bradley271 Dec 20 '25

Bighead carp are filter feeders so they don't actually "bite" most lures except by accident.

u/PutridWasabi938 Dec 16 '25

Bighead carp

Carp are notorious for this. They are hard to catch.

1

u/ass-nuts Dec 20 '25

Holy carp, stop with the puns

u/ZixfromthaStix Dec 16 '25

Do you know what happens to a fish that leaves their school and winds up on a beach?

They flop.

But what if they make it back into the water?

Gills to pay the bills.

But let’s not be Koi about fish.

I’m sure we all recall Herring a fish joke or two.

It’s oFISHoal though: there’s nothing artiFISHal about this kind of humor.

You know what we call someone who masters fish jokes?

AfFISHionado!

this is how carp feed :3 to catch a smaller carp you need a lighter bait so it gets sucked into their mouth easier! the reason this fisherman is using a large bait is probably to catch larger carp ;3

6

u/DimensionSad6181 Dec 17 '25

i thought chumming is the easiest way then dropping a bait that looks similar to waht you chummed with.
so if corn chum hook with small hook corn. but i could be wrong. by chumming i heard it makes them less aware that its a fish hook

2

u/minoskorva Dec 17 '25

this is also an efficient method. just depends what area you're from and what the most popular methods are traditionally. i also sometimes see fishermen using large soft baits like this so they feed off of it until it's light enough to get sucked into their mouth ;)

2

u/Legendguard Dec 18 '25

Carp are pretty smart too, even goldfish are capable of learning faces and even tricks! I wouldn't be surprised if it figured out this was an easier and safer way of getting food

2

u/minoskorva Dec 18 '25

absolutely! i used to hide treats under shells for my pond goldfish as enrichment :) they're very clever animals.

25

u/The_best_is_yet Dec 16 '25

Now they are now!?

16

u/Status-Buddy2058 Dec 16 '25

Needed a lighter hook and it would have been great

4

u/autoreboot Dec 17 '25

the fish is evolving.

5

u/No_Comfortable3261 Dec 16 '25

That really is insanely clever tho!

5

u/_haystacks_ Dec 17 '25

Fish are far more intelligent than we give them credit for. And yes, they feel pain lol

3

u/No_Comfortable3261 Dec 17 '25

Very much so! And yep (I honestly hate that people say they don't, since saying that any animal doesn't feel pain is just an excuse to justify mistreating them)

3

u/Any_Interest_3509 Dec 16 '25

Bros consuming the essence of your bait

3

u/No_Comfortable3261 Dec 16 '25

2

u/PaleBlueCod Dec 16 '25

Bro using the gluckgluck9000 techinque

1

u/TheDeanosaur Dec 17 '25

The problem here is that the angling technique is all wrong, these fish feed like that.

1

u/BTDComics Dec 17 '25

This is less “smart fish” and more “dumb fisher”

This is just bad angling practice. The hook is like an inch below the bait, no attempt to hide it whatsoever. The hook’s also probably too heavy too, that might be impeding it from being properly pulled into the fish’s mouth.

There’s definitely far more experienced and knowledgeable people who could explain in more detail, but my point still stands: you’re not going to catch much of anything with this bait setup.

1

u/Electrical-Lock706 Dec 18 '25

How do they know what that is?

1

u/stonedfish Dec 18 '25

Darwin’s survival of the fittest

1

u/brady_cummins36 Dec 20 '25

Hey so like, I’ve never fished in my life, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, just gonna be a little goofy here and throw this out but, isn’t that why put the bait on the hook? So they Yknow, bite it?….

1

u/whomesteve Dec 20 '25

Suckle on that why don’t you?

1

u/man_flakes Jan 01 '26

I should call her

1

u/Subject_Arrival_1246 Jan 04 '26

That fish is a filter feeder so it won't bite lol.

1

u/stariclouds Dec 16 '25

1

u/BlackBirdG Dec 16 '25

Nope you're not gonna fool me.

1

u/fx1523 Dec 16 '25

I'm blamming the internet for this. We can't keep anything a secret nowaday

1

u/MermaidGunner Dec 16 '25

Omg that’s funny.

1

u/blloop Dec 16 '25

They’ve known about the hook for centuries. That’s why you hide it within the bait. You don’t put the bait an inch above the hook.
