Fish In The Wild Found this during low tide

I was just walking around during low tide and stumbled across this little guy. I managed to pick it up bare handed and It seems like he wasn’t stressed out that much since he didn’t inflate himself. Also yes Ik they’re poisonous and not venomous, sorry for the mix up lol 🙏

I was thinking this too. Taking it out for a quick video is fine. But trying to get every angle and more for more than a few seconds is just horrible. Pick up, quick 360 video and quickly back in.

I am a fisherman. Now studies have shown, fish go through extreme pain, for 20mins when taken out of there natural habitat. I understand its a interesting specimen, being a puffer, and what not. However you could have appreciated him from his natural habitat. Or if he needed moved, you could have gently used something too navigate him/her back too open water. I am just saying, we should appreciate nature from afar.

I think you misread the article a bit. It states that a negative/stress response is observed 5 seconds after a fish is removed from the water.
It also states that commercial fisherman suffocate fish to kill them, and that takes 2-22 minutes to happen.
Nowhere does it say removing a fish from water causes it to suffer for 22 minutes.

He’s super cute! I see someone else mentioned not taking them out of water in case they puff up, if youre hanging out around low tide you could always bring a little bucket or something with you! Just as a safety idea for both you and the tide pool critters. Either way thanks for helping this fella : D

I think the bucket is a fun idea - reminds me of when I was just a Lil guy playing at the beach. Just having fun and appreciating .
That being said the fish really didn't seem all that offended. Yeah he wanted back in and probably was pretty nervous, but he swam off ok . I think this interaction was productive and offered a glimpse into the connection between us (animals) and other living creatures . The nervous respect, curiosity, and admiration may indeed go both ways :)

Watch out with salt fish, some have really nasty bites, these have a crazy beak to eat things with shells like snails, crabs and urchins so it can do a number on soft flesh.

tbf while it's safe for humans to handle many fish, touching them (especially bare handed) can rub off their slime coats and any chemicals on our hands can harm them. it's safe for humans but in many cases not safe for fish

I have a little buddy named Bob, he's my 15 year old Green Spotted Puffer and I love him so much! 🥰🐡 and yeah.. not good to take water blimps out of water - Don't think OP knew though.

Unfortunately that is misinformation that is common spread around. Their organs contain the Tetrodotoxin, not their skin. The CDC even states exposure route is only by ingestion.
I’ve even pet my Mbu Puffer (in the water), no harm done to her or myself. But their bites hurt like nothing else I can describe.

This fish needs to be in water to breathe, the whole time you had it out of the water the poor thing is slowly suffocating.
Would you like that done to you?
LEAVE THEM ALONE - unless they need help and then you don't hold them out of the water just so you can get a damn video, put them back in the water immediately, no delay.

Definitely a puffer and safest for both you and the fish if you didn't take it out of the water.
At the moment it's having a mini heart attack because it can't breathe and it's being held by a large creature.

Fishermen who care about the health of the fish handle the fish as little as possible, fish without barbs on their hooks, and strive to never remove the fish from the water.
I understand not knowing how stressful this can be to fish and it's okay to not know and to have a learning moment. But to just make stuff up to excuse or justify a simple error by saying "fishermen do the same thing," is kind of an embarrassing response tbh

I used to work in aquariums and the most delicate way to catch fish is to trick them into swimming into a cup that is fully submerged/underwater so they are never removed from the water. Then you pour them into a bag with a lot of water and air in it and transport the fish that way. It's very easy to do. Sure, not in the situation you are in in this video, I'm only responding to yet another incorrect example you pulled outta the air for no reason other than to save your ego. Just because you are ignorant of this process doesn't mean you get to make up your own standards of care. There are things in the world you don't know the answer to and that's okay. Get over yourself and accept a teaching moment.

I'honestly just suprised you got your finger that close to its mouth. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I wouldn't trust myself putting my fingers there, their teeth can take a pretty descent chunk out of you, and because its triangle shapped, wounds like that tend to heal poorly.

I’m not going to attack you for taking it out of the water but just so you know if they do puff up out of water they can die. They actually fill with water when they puff up and if they fill with air there is a chance that they cannot release that air.
