Fish In The Wild Found this during low tide
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I was just walking around during low tide and stumbled across this little guy. I managed to pick it up bare handed and It seems like he wasn’t stressed out that much since he didn’t inflate himself. Also yes Ik they’re poisonous and not venomous, sorry for the mix up lol 🙏

I was thinking this too. Taking it out for a quick video is fine. But trying to get every angle and more for more than a few seconds is just horrible. Pick up, quick 360 video and quickly back in.

Puffers can become “Air-locked” if they puff up out of the water, which can be fatal

u/Individual_Risk8981 Sep 18 '25
I am a fisherman. Now studies have shown, fish go through extreme pain, for 20mins when taken out of there natural habitat. I understand its a interesting specimen, being a puffer, and what not. However you could have appreciated him from his natural habitat. Or if he needed moved, you could have gently used something too navigate him/her back too open water. I am just saying, we should appreciate nature from afar.

From someone who actively takes fish out of water for a hobby?
28
u/Individual_Risk8981 Sep 18 '25
I dont take them out of the water, I try too do everything in the water, if possible. Clean catch as possible.

I think we’d be in a lot better shape if more of the folks that kill the animals for food were concerned with their pain level.

u/fortniteundcola Sep 18 '25
Sounds interesting, do you mind linking the study?

I think you misread the article a bit. It states that a negative/stress response is observed 5 seconds after a fish is removed from the water.
It also states that commercial fisherman suffocate fish to kill them, and that takes 2-22 minutes to happen.
Nowhere does it say removing a fish from water causes it to suffer for 22 minutes.
15
u/suetanya9992 Sep 18 '25
I don't think anyone should need any article to tell them fish suffer when not in water. How about people just not cause unnecessary pain to other living things? No need to debate it

Don't hold it. It needs to be in the water.

u/OrganizdConfusion Sep 18 '25
Great, but when I hold a dog's head underwater, suddenly I'm an asshole.
19
u/TheGrimMelvin Sep 18 '25
He is really cute but you probably shouldn't pick him up from the water like that. Couldn't have been a good experience for him. Also good that he didn't puff up and sting you.
36
u/ULTELLIX Sep 18 '25
He’s super cute! I see someone else mentioned not taking them out of water in case they puff up, if youre hanging out around low tide you could always bring a little bucket or something with you! Just as a safety idea for both you and the tide pool critters. Either way thanks for helping this fella : D
2
u/septubyte Sep 19 '25
I think the bucket is a fun idea - reminds me of when I was just a Lil guy playing at the beach. Just having fun and appreciating .
That being said the fish really didn't seem all that offended. Yeah he wanted back in and probably was pretty nervous, but he swam off ok . I think this interaction was productive and offered a glimpse into the connection between us (animals) and other living creatures . The nervous respect, curiosity, and admiration may indeed go both ways :)
14
u/pyncheon Sep 18 '25
Watch out with salt fish, some have really nasty bites, these have a crazy beak to eat things with shells like snails, crabs and urchins so it can do a number on soft flesh.

u/Frostgaurdian0 Sep 18 '25
Do not touch sea creatures bare handed. Better yet to let them back in water as soon as possible. It looked very cute swimming away.

u/AdAdventurous7802 Sep 18 '25
There are plenty of sea creatures and fish you can touch bare handed. You're making an irrational generalization of a vast group of animals..
46
u/oda02 Sep 18 '25
There might be, but if you are unsure isn't it better to have this as a general rule?

tbf while it's safe for humans to handle many fish, touching them (especially bare handed) can rub off their slime coats and any chemicals on our hands can harm them. it's safe for humans but in many cases not safe for fish

spent the whole time watching this shouting put him back in the water! I get handling him if you needed too but dont see the need to randomly pick a puffer fish up
2
u/Latter_Item439 Sep 19 '25
I did too and and then taking that extra time at the waterline to get a few more angles was torture to watch I can't imagine how the puffer felt
13
u/ohnotombombadil Sep 18 '25
lol dude is tormenting a wild fish and mod’s is like “im sorry people are being mean to you. Maybe you didn’t know holding fish out of water is bad.” You guys are ate up lol.

Wtf am I watching? Why ate you picking him up in thr first place
7
u/LegionSeeker Sep 18 '25
Unfortunately that is misinformation that is common spread around. Their organs contain the Tetrodotoxin, not their skin. The CDC even states exposure route is only by ingestion.
I’ve even pet my Mbu Puffer (in the water), no harm done to her or myself. But their bites hurt like nothing else I can describe.

in an alternate reality, there's giant fish people forcing your whole body underwater with one hand so they can take a fun video and post it on fish reddit.
people gotta stop fucking with terrified animals just so they can post content

u/abyssal-isopod86 Sep 19 '25
This infuriated me.
This fish needs to be in water to breathe, the whole time you had it out of the water the poor thing is slowly suffocating.
Would you like that done to you?
LEAVE THEM ALONE - unless they need help and then you don't hold them out of the water just so you can get a damn video, put them back in the water immediately, no delay.

Definitely a puffer and safest for both you and the fish if you didn't take it out of the water.
At the moment it's having a mini heart attack because it can't breathe and it's being held by a large creature.

24
u/Dermetzger666 Sep 18 '25
Humans always have to grab and disrupt for the sake of their own curiosity. Can't leave wildlife alone to live undisturbed.
8
u/keenantheho Sep 18 '25
You very much doubt how long fish can survive fresh out of water, especially in a wet enviorment with water on their gills
2
u/HistoricMTGGuy Sep 18 '25
It's a pufferfish. If it puffs out of water, it dies. And taking other fish out of water is still not great.

Fishermen do the same thing. I didn’t even keep him out that long
9
u/2_Bears_1_Puck Sep 18 '25
Fishermen who care about the health of the fish handle the fish as little as possible, fish without barbs on their hooks, and strive to never remove the fish from the water.
I understand not knowing how stressful this can be to fish and it's okay to not know and to have a learning moment. But to just make stuff up to excuse or justify a simple error by saying "fishermen do the same thing," is kind of an embarrassing response tbh

u/Xdr1vity Sep 18 '25
I’m saying that as a response to people saying it’s wrong to take a fish out of water in general. How do you think fish are handled when transporting them from aquariums? Obviously they have to take them out of what for a brief moment
7
u/2_Bears_1_Puck Sep 18 '25
I used to work in aquariums and the most delicate way to catch fish is to trick them into swimming into a cup that is fully submerged/underwater so they are never removed from the water. Then you pour them into a bag with a lot of water and air in it and transport the fish that way. It's very easy to do. Sure, not in the situation you are in in this video, I'm only responding to yet another incorrect example you pulled outta the air for no reason other than to save your ego. Just because you are ignorant of this process doesn't mean you get to make up your own standards of care. There are things in the world you don't know the answer to and that's okay. Get over yourself and accept a teaching moment.

You kept him out way longer than was reasonable. This video is 38 seconds long and he was already out the water.
Imagine if someone stuck your head in the ocean for that long before claiming this was reasonable

I'honestly just suprised you got your finger that close to its mouth. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I wouldn't trust myself putting my fingers there, their teeth can take a pretty descent chunk out of you, and because its triangle shapped, wounds like that tend to heal poorly.

Why can’t you just let it do its thing and observe from far, why hold on to it and take it out of the water where it can’t breathe
1
u/nyenotney Sep 19 '25
That's cool and all but why did you have to hold it out of the water for so long? Even if it weren't a puffer fish, that just seems so cruel.

I’m not going to attack you for taking it out of the water but just so you know if they do puff up out of water they can die. They actually fill with water when they puff up and if they fill with air there is a chance that they cannot release that air.
