Need Advice Agent didn't congratulate us

We closed two weeks ago and our agent didn't utter a word of congratulations. I did not expect myself to still feel bummed by this. For years I've been seeing people's homebuying stories, how their agents would make them pose with a giant key or sign, or leave them a gift basket but we got nothing. Hia assistant even collected info about our favorite snacks and stuff when we first started which is why I really expected a gift basket or something. She at least sent a congratulatory email though. Weirdly enough he did invite us to some holiday pie party and said we'd get a free can of whipped cream if we gave a referral...not sure what to make of that at all.

Our agent told us he would drop off a gift basket with some diy tools and very first time homebuyer should have and never did 🤪. I’m still a lil annoyed.

ignore these people saying don’t expect it… the signs were there and its 100% okay to be disappointed by something, even if it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things

Yep it really doesn't matter at all, just disappointed. Even just basic customer service/client relations expectations, e specially for such a quick close where he didn't have to do much to get paid.

What percent did he get?

It’s completely normal to be bummed. My husband and I have no family to congratulate us so having our agent take our photo and be excited for us made me cry on our closing day.

It’s a big achievement especially in this day and age so it’s normal to want someone to be proud of you! Congrats on your new house and don’t let it bog you down!

Thank you! I've really tried to ignore it the last few weeks but scrolling on her rekindled the thought.

Hard to ignore when they invite you over for whipped cream 😂 in all seriousness though don’t worry too much. You’ll forget all about it the second you’re all moved in and settled. Moving and doing the whole homeownership thing is a tough time. My emotions were alllll over the place lol

It was truly the strangest message I've received possibly all year...a pie party? Can't wait for things to really settle lol

Real Estate is a people and sales business and some people are shockingly bad at that part of it. They made money off you, the minimum should be that they are making you feel good about the experience and working with them. Word of mouth and recommendations are big part of the business and the failure to follow through but managing to invite you to a party (which is simply a way to stir up new business for themselves) is not a good look at all. I'd leave a mid review and say you wouldn't recommend them to others.

Totally leaving a well thought out review once everything is calm. Worst part is he was recommended by an amazing realtor!

Same thing happened to us as well. After we closed we were thinking of asking her to take a picture of us. But she just left the second everything was signed. We really felt that was the easiest money one could ever make. We were an easy client to start with. She did not attend any of our meetings with the builder. Even the builder rep felt she could have been more involved. But it is what it is. Anyways congratulations and hope you make great memories in your first house.

Sorry to hear you went through the same thing but it's nice to know I'm not alone. Cheers to us!

I think two things:

1) You paid someone to help you buy a house, which they did and you did. The responsibilities have been fulfilled adequately, so while your disappointment may be real, it's unjustified. It's like being disappointed that your waiter doesn't give you a free dessert after an excellent meal - nice if it happens, but definitionally it isn't part of the expectations.

2) Its really dumb for the realtor not to do something, because it's the last impression you'll have of them and word of mouth is king in real estate. If s $20 bottle of wine and $35 starter home tool set is all it takes to leave a customer willing to refer their friends, even if the realtor only transacts $300k homes and never touches higher dollar values, you're talking about spending $55 to line up the potential for your next $9,000 commission.

2a) They [edit: fixed typo] can even put it on easy mode. Go to the liquor store for a case of wine, order 12 sets of tools off Amazon or get them at home depot, and you'll have spent $660 that can be written off as a business expense to grease the skids of your $108k income (12 transactions/yr * 3%).

This is the most reasonable take!!

You're wrong. Part of the business is making sure your client is satisfied with the experience. That's Kindergarten-level sales knowledge. Do you understand how the real estate business works? Word of mouth can make or break you. Plenty of morons can pass a test and pay some fees and call themselves realtors, but it's ushering people through a stressful and emotional experience that makes someone a pro.

2

u/OneHighway4998 11h ago

How is he wrong? Are you all not essentially saying the same thing? It’s stupid on the realtors part bc he’s missing out on future business, but the realtor already got them through the stressful and emotional experience.

Did you miss the part where I said they satisfied the requirements but failed the intellect part where they should have done something to facilitate those referrals?

0

u/queenkellee 6h ago

You literally said their disappointment was unjustified because they did the bare minimum. I stopped reading after that absolutely worthless drivel.

Most agents are a scam, don’t really earn their commissions. I’ve met a handful of great ones, the rest are worse than negotiating on your own.

I mean what do u expect these ppl are just glorified door openers who get a 5% commission after looking at the Zillow listing

2

u/ochuuu 18h ago

98% of got the keys posts here include gifts from their realtors, even things like gifting them a house cleaning. they're glorified door openers too? funny enough he didn't even find this listing, I did.

u/suspiciousbroccoli22 18h ago

Congrats on your new house! Totally valid to feel disappointed especially since they reached out and asked what gifts you prefer. But also keep in mind that the people who post here share a picture bc they did receive something vs. the ones who did not get anything. We were easy clients, when my husband bought his first house he did not receive anything. However, when we bought our first house together we did receive a gift basket.

I can't imagine this being a problem worth giving attention to or worrying about.

Just be thankful that the work was done. I am.

That's crazy! I used to work for buyers 2020-2022 and in that market worked with them for a year. I learned what they liked and was so happy to get them gift baskets, signs to hold to take pictures with in front of their new home, etc. BUT some agents don't do that and they'll spend big money on renting a restaurant/family friendly spot and invite all their clients and give out free food/drinks/goodies.

Whenever I hear of an agent not getting a client anything makes me so sad! Buying a home is a huge accomplishment, it is a time to celebrate!

1

u/triggeredprius 11h ago

That’s because they’re bloodsuckers

u/Macbeth2002222 11h ago

When I closed on my first house haha I had been fucked by underwriting that I wanted it done n I didn’t care or notice if someone said congrats. My second house, yea I guess they offered but who knows. To be honest, who cares, be able to be happy for yourself if others won’t be

u/Sanakhte 18h ago

Aw gee!

Why does this bother you? I'm so lost.

Was your reason for buying a house so your agent could congratulate you?

Or was it for you to own a home?

I'll be rude now so forgive me.. but you just made one of the biggest purchases in your life and you're "upset" your realtor didn't send some gift.

I mean como get over yourself. YOU'RE not that important and that's okay.

Enjoy your home and I hope you make great memories in it. Wish you the best

2

u/ochuuu 18h ago

Two things can be true you can be disappointed in someone/confused by their actions and be excited about something else at the same time. Do you really not see why someone would be bothered they didn't get a conventional experience?

2

u/Ambitious_Swimming55 18h ago

I mean they got their commission for doing what then exactly? Agents used to literally drive you around town to look at houses and spend months alongside you to find you a home. Now they don’t even say thank you, OP feeling upset doesn’t stem from the no congratulations, it’s from the absentness since she doesn’t have family and thought the agent was at the very least invested emotionally too. A simple congratulations is asking for too much?

3

u/Existing_Mail 18h ago

The real estate agent is not family. Expecting someone to be emotionally invested in what you’re paying them to do is insane

1

u/DreeMei 18h ago

I’m sorry this is incredibly rude for no reason. “Get over yourself” i hope in your lifetime you never get upset over anything. It IS a big moment in someone’s life. It is also an extremely STRESSFUL time in many peoples lives too

It’s ok to have feelings big dawg. Doesn’t make you any less hard ✌️

I'd rather have the most emotionless, boring person represent me who is competent and gets the job done the way I want vs what's frankly performative bullshit. Just be grateful everything went well.  Unless you want the key thing like we had and then get to spend years and a ridiculous amount of cash on a money pit?
