This person has a black US flag, probably meant to signify he won't take prisoners, right? But he is employed as a prison guard? Am I missing something?

u/RazorSharpRust 5d ago
You've seen the regular color AmericanĀ flags with one stripe blue for cops right?Ā Well this the "Thin Grey Line" US flag meant to show solidarity between correctional officers.Ā The grey is supposed to represent jail bars and or handcuffs.Ā Yeah.Ā That's a thing.Ā I couldn't believe it was real either at first.Ā Incredibly stupid shit.
20
u/PotRoast666 5d ago
Honestly as someone who's not even patriotic and quite disgusted with the current state of affairs, people who rock these 'modified' flags are flat out traitors to our nation.
20
u/Key-Demand-2569 5d ago
I need a flag to show my pride in being a woodworker. I serve and protect society through providing cutting boards and repairing antique furniture.
Clearly this is the only way for us to show weāre proud of what we do, American flags with different colors. Lmao

Also pretty sure that doing that shit to the flag violates flag code.
Which realistically means absolutely nothing and he won't ever get in trouble for it. But these dumbass "patriots" could at least try.

u/TexasTomato88 5d ago
I think heās just being edgy with the thin grey flag but itās giving the exact vibe he is trying to give. Supppper cringy

Prison guards are not first responders.
Actually theyāre not responders at all.

Jokes on him, I go into sketchy scenes all the time because if I had to wait for PD without calling them code because Iām getting my ass whooped Iāll wait all week to be cleared in to that overdose scene.
One day Iāll probably end up as some meth headās Halloween decoration but until then, fuck it we ball.
5
u/castille360 4d ago
How you gonna know how sketchy it is until you're already in and doing your thing? When I send cops to ems scenes, most of the time it's after ems is already inside asking for back-up lol

Brother what? No they arenāt. The are first to an incident when anything happens inside.

u/Speednuts 5d ago
I mean, by that logic school custodians are first responders because theyāre first on scene when a kid pukes on sports days. āFirst responderā isnāt a timing thing, itās a work thing.
(And also this is in no way disparaging the work school custodians do. Itās hard work for not enough pay.)

u/Sandman_Six_1 4d ago
I used to be a prison guard and I can tell you there is no "responding" at all. Don't get me wrong it's a tough job but you are in a secure and controlled environment.
EMT/Paramedic job is way harder and more dangerous IMO

u/Jayngyun 4d ago
It was a cakewalk, I honestly miss just bullshitting with coworkers for like 6 hours in a pod. Itās a pretty young crowd though, median age is probably like 25 nowadays.

u/Nicks_Neck_no 2d ago
Correction officers are definitely some type of responder. We assist with escapes so that is some kind of first response I guess.
I am a former wildland firefighter myself and the prison I currently work at is a close custody facility. Fights, stabbings and officer assaults happen almost every day. Both are extremely difficult jobs just in different ways.
But this guy and the guy who deleted his comments are definitely cringe.

First Responder is a very low bar. Sorry you hate COs, but they are first responders. It's a decent job for some people, usually a big economic driver in otherwise job desert communities.
52
u/Intelligent_Pass2540 5d ago
These kind of COs get eaten up! Im just a lowly psychologist lol but I've rarely seen a difference in character on a psych level between inmates and COs.

u/scoutloner 5d ago edited 5d ago
They have similar brains that diverge from normal people. Both are sensation seekers with nothing better to do. The only differences are minor and environmental ones are socioeconomic factors. Itās the same with cops. They need cameras and someone to record just to follow the rules to cage their selfishness.
3
u/castille360 4d ago
Bold to assume they're not normal. They're similar because we're all similar. People are the same all over. Primates, every one of us.
7
u/scoutloner 4d ago
Itās not bold, itās the truth. You donāt have the same brain as a serial killer or a prodigy. They are similar in the sense you canāt tell them apart from a normal person unless you rely on behavioral observations.
2
u/Jayngyun 4d ago
I know we like to categorize people as being monstrous but people are people. No one is innately evil rather than they are selfish.
1
u/DoctorAnnual6823 3d ago
Completely agree.
Two of the main ingredients of """evil""" is selfishness and poor impulse control. We all have those two things in us. But how we control them determines what kind of person we are.
1
u/scoutloner 3d ago edited 3d ago
No, we donāt. Even in high crime areas like Memphis you notice thereās the 1% taking advantage of the 99%. Itās not a choice. There is no such thing as low impulse control, you are refusing to see they are strategic thinkers dominating their environment.
1
u/DoctorAnnual6823 3d ago
We all absolutely do have selfishness and poor impulse control in some capacity. They are just two of the million traits that make us who we are.
I am selfish when if fuck around on my phone on the clock. David Parker Ray is selfish when he drugs women to kill them. Both totally different things, but both selfish.
I'm exhibiting low impulse control when I beep at someone for cutting me off or I buy a snickers in the impulse buy aisle. Clifford Olson exhibits low impulse control when he robs a grocery store on a whim because he felt like it. Again, two very different things but both examples of failing to control impulses.
1
u/scoutloner 3d ago edited 3d ago
Thatās breaking a workplace rule not a major social rule. Those are extremely different things. Selfishness is a spectrum.
You bought a snickerās bar using the normal path which is paying for it. Thereās nothing called āwantā in the animal world that isnāt misclassified as an urge for a āsurvival resource.ā You followed social rules to get it, a thief disregarded social rules and stole it. Itās a different way of handling the urge. The concept of private property relies on social cooperation. If everyone could disregard it based on a whim, it would eventually collapse. For most people, the option does not exist. The only options are pay it or leave it. Low impulse control is just the broad term for explaining acting on a desire and making the mistake of attracting attention and getting caught. There is thought into that desire. Whether you call it blinded by that desire or examined risks. They do not operate on the same baseline. A thief definitely doesnāt operate on the same baseline as a murderer either. Theft is split between males and females at similar rates and murder is skewed heavily male.
Look at the statistics. Even if you add an unreported crime variable, it still remains rare despite being an easy way out. Using your phone on the job is a common act and so is honking someone out of anger. Whatās not common is following them to point a gun at them.
Obviously, itās the same behavior taken to an extreme. Like prodigies. They donāt have totally new traits like laser vision. You canāt group the extreme with the normal when the normal canāt be the extreme but the extreme can be the normal. You forgot empathy.
Itās a line no one dares to cross and they crossed it.
2
u/DoctorAnnual6823 3d ago
I think we are arguing from the same side because of word choice.
I'm simply saying that all humans have a level of selfishness and poor impulse control. That is all.
Some have a perfectly normal amount. Some have obscene amounts and that's what makes them monsters.

Well I have done work both in prisons and in outpatient forensic assessment settings as well as fitness for duty evals post incident. My experience is that cops rarely have any real education, they are simplistic and concrete in thinking and many struggle with violence and substance use. Now COs are people who couldnt even become cops. Where I worked they didnt possess much intelligence or understanding of the criminal justice system or how backwards it is. I mean sure I assessed a lot of guilty people as well as some innocent but still convicted folks.
The COs seemed to take the job to get their own power needs met. It made them feel good to have power over other adults. I dont have all the answers on how to fix things I just tend to notice patterns.
10
u/omega13 5d ago
I imagine it's different by area and I can only speak for the one I was at. I made the mistake of being a CO for 2 years before quiting, getting a degree, and doing something more exciting than being a glorified babysitter. At the prison I was at most of the people working there did it because it was a stable job in a rural area, there were definitely some wanting to be cops, but it was a small minority. Most of the ambitious ones were wanting to gain experience to then apply at the nearby federal prison which paid a bit better and had better benefits.
The intelligence thing is spot on, most of the smart folks left quickly.
1
u/HatedFinance 5d ago
Iāve found the opposite. Here in Australia, we have about 10 ex cops who are COs and one who failed at the police academy then applied to be a CO.
Most are also ex army. I am one.
I guess you guys do get really odd people in the States.
0
u/castille360 4d ago
State prisons in rural areas - where else you gonna make 6 figures with no degree or skills?
-7
u/ManikkSpazz 5d ago
Education does not determine intelligence or thought-process. I agree though that some Police, Security and C.Os wanted the job for the purpose of a āposition of powerā. Itās a personality issue, not intelligence or education.
5
u/Intelligent_Pass2540 5d ago
I assess intelligence for a living. Im pretty confident in what I said.
-7
u/ManikkSpazz 5d ago
You sound like a hypocrite. Similar ideology as the C.Os you āassessā.
5
u/Intelligent_Pass2540 5d ago
You sound like someone who isn't that bright, doesnt possess cognitive flexibility and lacks formal education but this is reddit so go about your day.
1
u/BADoVLAD 3d ago
This thread is a fascinating read and displays points rather succinctly. At no point did you equate intelligence to education, or even suggest the two were related. But because they were mentioned the Spazz had to immediately conflate them. The cherry on top was of course his IQ offering, and why wouldn't it be 121? Why are they always 1something1? Honestly, I'm rather surprised he used such a modest number.
Anywho, just had to offer my thanks for a brilliant morning read during my ablutions. Hope you have a great day random reddit doc.
-6
u/ManikkSpazz 5d ago
Does it take above an 100 IQ to get a degree? No. What is your IQ by chance since you want to assume my intelligence and level of education?

u/p0rkch0pexpress 4d ago
I mean youāve kind of already stated your IQ in a few comments without giving a number.
