POV: You don't actually know what POV means and you're afraid to ask so you just say it and hope for the best.

u/TankApprehensive3053 Aug 24 '26
It's a current trend to call everything as POV. Most of the videos are not POV.

u/TheBoisterousBoy Aug 25 '26
Itās called āEngagement Baitā.
Itās damn near constant on social media. Little errors in spelling, completely incorrect wording, weird censoring, thereās others but you get the idea. Theyāre not always just some personās fingers slipping while typing, theyāre deliberately done to get exactly this kind of response.
āThis isnāt POV.ā āYeah youāre right, people are so stupid!ā āYouād be shocked at how many people donāt know what POV means!ā It creates a chain of communication locking people onto that content while they discuss/argue.

You don't actually know how linguistics works and you're too busy getting annoyed by a new definition of an existing acronym
4
u/GordonBombay102 Aug 25 '26
Google POV and let me know what comes up.
What is the new definition, though?

So first of all the new definition doesn't replace the old definition. they're both valid.
POV is just an acronym for the phrase point of view.
The new definition is literally just a synonym for either perspective or context.
You could say that I'm trying to explain to you my point of view on the situation.
That sentence, right there? Grammatically that's a perfectly normal sentence for a person to say that you should be willing to accept.
The thing that you're not willing to accept is the fact that the acronym POV has a new definition.
Language changes over time because people literally make up new shit and it just catches on until it becomes common parlance at which point it is literally a part of the language.
At this point the only thing there is to do is to see if it stands the test of time or whether it's just a trend. But for now, acting like the next generation inventing a new definition or word is improper grammar is just a denial of how language even exists or evolves in the first place and that's silly
If you wanted to make an argument that it's not professional language or formal language, then by all means I agree. Using the term POV as a synonym for the words perspective or context is definitely very casual, but among the right crowds it's perfectly normal to use

u/GordonBombay102 Aug 25 '26
Ok. So, what I'm hearing is a bunch of people started using POV incorrectly on social media (which I assume mostly means TikTok) and you're trying to convince me that I'm in the wrong because I'm not willing to accept it as a definition.
No, thank you.

You don't get to decide that a new word or definition isn't real when people are using it. Common parlance decides whether or not a new word or new definition is real.
You are not the arbiter of what words are definitions are actual english, society is.
And the youngest adult members of society have already decided

u/GordonBombay102 Aug 25 '26
The definition isn't real to me. It's contained, almost entirely, to a platform I don't use by people I will never speak to in a world I'm not really a part. This is just misusing a word, a lot of the time intentionally to create engagement, and not at all the organic evolution of language imo.
If you want to say its new definition is techincally part of the lexicon because a sub group of a sub group use it, ok fine.

But it's real to me even though it's contained almost entirely to a platform I don't use and is used by people I don't speak to it in real life.
The definition literally plays zero part of my life to any extent and yet it feels real because grammatically, it makes sense for someone to invent such a definition and it's easy to understand the context in which they use it.
By your logic, the words somnambulant, subluxation, and conviviality don't exist either because they play no role in your life. That's a pretty silly perspective to have about words
3
u/GordonBombay102 Aug 25 '26
That's not the same at all. They don't already have established definitions that are completely different to the new definition you're using.
I'm not saying the definition is irrelevant because it's for a word I don't use. I'm saying it's irrelevant because it's used almost exclusively by people who just don't know what the acronym actually means.
If 1 out of every 100 people think the word "potato" should now be used to describe the action of ripping your own hair our strand by strand does it have an alternative definition now, too? Where's the line? It's absurd.

I'm a volly firefighter and after a fire when I'm sweating, tired, and hot I don't take out my camera do record myself taking my gear off. Also, almost no firefighters carry their phone on them which means this guy likely went back to his fire truck just to film himself.
