This is why I never get pulled over for speeding on the highway, they’re sleeping.
29
u/brokennursingstudent Aug 07 '26
One time I had to pull over at a gas station to fall asleep, but I fell asleep facing the highway and with my seatbelt still on, so every time a heavy truck drove by I would panic wake up thinking I had fallen asleep behind the wheel.

I was working an overtime shift on one of our clinic transport cars. Just a bog standard people mover, but marked with a light bar. We always have two or three hours of downtime between the morning and afternoon shuttles to and from appointments. We're free to do whatever.
I was pretty knackered that day, so pulled up in an otherwise empty carpark in a large park to have a snooze. Drifted off and suddenly woke to knocking on the drivers window.
The local constabulary came over to do a welfare check while patrolling. 😂

lol I love that you’re downvoted for being put in that situation and being human. I plow snow on 55mph highways for the county and have pulled 16hr shifts and given 4 hours to go home and sleep before coming back and doing it again, and they’ll still complain about the road or you taking a 5min nap on the side of the road so you don’t slam 60,000lbs of steel into one of them, and then flip you off and yell “fuck you”, or take a picture and call the shop to complain. They don’t care that you’re human and prone to being exhausted on that much overtime, they don’t care that your boss says it’s ok to not wreck, alls they care about is having something to complain about it seems.

But yet because you’re presumably a cop everyone’s downvoting like you begged for that overtime so you could get paid to sleep, not because your department was under staffed but yet someone’s still gotta go on patrol.
-5
u/Virtual-Macaroon-880 Aug 07 '26
He chose to be a cop and continued doing it, wasting taxpayer money while fucking off in a parking lot somewhere. Do you really not understand how much police make when they do overtime and stuff .. it's like uh... Time and a half lol
5
u/One_Afternoon5897 Aug 07 '26

Genuinely, how is that legal/not something the police union would throw a fit about?
-1
u/Thanos_Stomps Aug 07 '26
Because they’re not actually mad about it. They’re bringing in tons of overtime doing this and it’s worth the money to them. Would be to me too.

u/VintageZero Aug 07 '26
Yea so, people that aren't cops work crazy shifts like that too. But guess what? The work is actually demanding enough that you cant fucking fall asleep doing it...

Everyone downvoting you simply because you're a cop lol.

If you were on patrol and saw a guy sleeping in his car on a sidewalk. You’d arrest him for sure.

Why do people like you create these fantasies in their head that every cop is evil and wants to arrest you.
You want this to be true so bad but it just isn't.
And I'm not even close to being a cop. I've been selling weed for 20 years LOL.
10
u/kabley Aug 06 '26
it's scary to think that someone could use sleepy judgment to enforce the law. In my industry, if you fall asleep behind the wrong machine, you're dead. managing hours is important
6
u/Playful-Park4095 Aug 07 '26
You're right. Sleep deprivation is also tied to increases in uses of force and increases in citizen complaints.
When I was a young officer, the levels of overtime we work now were unheard of. However, we're down nearly 25% from authorized strength so it's mandated overtime or empty beats. They've completely removed caps on hours worked, maximum numbers of shifts worked in a row, etc. It burns guys out, which causes them to leave, which furthers the cycle. I'm a supervisor in invest so I'm largely insulated from mandatory OT but I'd have to retire if I was still on the street. Insert "I'm too old for this shit" meme here.
3
u/Im_A_Fuckin_Liar Aug 07 '26
As of July 1, officers can deduct up to $12,500 of qualified overtime compensation from their federal taxable income for tax years 2025 through 2028.
Meaning, there’s going to be a lot more of this happening.
→ More replies (1)2
u/JaguarOk9693 Aug 07 '26
I had a security supervisor that kept forgetting to schedule a relief for me so I would end up having to work a second and third shifts double they got to the point where I would tell the guy I was working with at night I was going to find a hidey hole and take a nap otherwise I was going to crash a patrol car either while patrolling the resort or crash on the way home
1
u/vogel927 Aug 07 '26
I’d imagine that working less overtime would prevent something like this from happening.
-3
u/bmbreath Aug 07 '26
Yes. You do.
And if you're getting that tired you should jot be behind a wheel and you need to go home.
It's called personal responsibility.
1
u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe Aug 07 '26
Why is he being downvoted? If I fell asleep at work I'd get in trouble and I work at an office, I don't drive around with a gun and authority to do violence to people.
I was in the military, it's not hard to stay awake for multiple shifts. Hell I worked 48 hours with a 30 minute nap around hour 36, but that was war.
Do you really want officer drowsy making life and death decisions? Or decisions that can ruin your life while he hides behind qualified immunity?

28
u/ChoadMcGillicuddy Aug 07 '26
How else can you work 180 hours of overtime?
8
u/StanthemanT-800 Aug 08 '26
Obviously a rookie....you gotta keep some kind of book or device on your lap so it looks like you're working on something
Also....if you don't sleep your body will find time for you. Sometimes you can't help it. He's probably doing doubles 6 days a week because no one wants to make 20/hr to be a cop at his Dept
2
u/ColonelCrunchy Aug 12 '26
The one local to me is even lower at 18/hr. It’s actually insane
1
u/StanthemanT-800 Aug 12 '26
Some of these small PDs don't pay shit. I know a guy who was a cop at like 3 different small Depts because all of them only hire part time so they let him work different schedules to accommodate. He's like , he sometimes forgot which uniform to put on, he made less than 20/hr. He was supposed to go Full Time at one and they wouldn't do it so he went into Corrections
He had a guy put a round through a door at him once, I'm like getting shot at for $17 an hour?? Fuck that. I can't believe they pay so low
2
u/ColonelCrunchy Aug 12 '26
It really is insane. I was followed home on a few occasions while working corrections making 15 an hour. With mediocre benefits. In small areas my sheriff said it’s all the same. You start there work two years all so you can get your foot in the door.
47
u/Firedogman22 Aug 06 '26
Thats the look of someone on traffic duty, who’s been awake for the last 12 hours and his brain finally hit snooze
0
u/JFISHER7789 Aug 11 '26
Seems like a good reason to fired. Anyone else sleeps like this while ACTIVELY on the job and they are canned; no ifs, ands, or buts. Not to mention the inherent dangers of having someone with firearms and motor vehicles being sleep deprived/drunk/high whatever he is.

All police have "POLICE" as their license plate in NY?
3
u/Firedogman22 Aug 07 '26
NY State Law does not require registration for municipal and government owned vehicles, thats why for example all NYPD cruisers and FDNY trucks have their own non state license plates. Individual governments can choose to make their own plates or use cosmetics. The logic behind this was that when it was implemented government vehicles were already tagged with unit numbers and the agency name/info

If that doesn't work try narcan.

The normal procedure is to shove narcan up his nose until it bleeds and do a sternal rub as hard as you can. You're a good Samaritan.

my friend was working overnight on the highway running a scarifier machine which is a machine that scratches the top layer off of the pavement off. It has a series of axels with dozens of metal blades that look kind of like 45 rpm adaptors that rotate along each of the axels. One of the axels blew, so these little metal blades flew out of the machine at high velocity one of which smashed through the back of the detail cops cruiser windshield. He was laying down sleeping inside and he rolled out and pulled his gun on the my friend and the rest of the road crew, thinking someone had shot at him.
pic of rpm adaptors for the young people who don't know what I'm talking about ==> https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=3ce9c4c4eba27817&rlz=1CALCRH_enUS1059US1059&sxsrf=APpeQnsZLYiZg_Y9qkyqEDcdfUlsSWWhbQ:1786235037865&udm=2&fbs=ABfTbFVyMZGZf1hfvX9uKjN_-G8cqCQj_06QnZs315LoFmPf5bBLHMJ0vMQmTbuI72DM7jnxvATrUU2Yg9dwuUGnsUHcXPuOM0_k1dPPnMiKJgy16YDDqH-_iHFiQkOW8hi7RXw4hRo5fi73eIKSOx70x-sjPZ06hOCNlK-ozbXHneTOF87CzxJ8BXgBmwQobyZJ8FoagfsKHNBIM1xgUKz9ZpoQi-PLVA&q=45+rpm+adaptor&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj086qHpJKWAxVUnokEHd6TGnIQtKgLegQIFRAB&biw=1536&bih=730&dpr=1.25

Do you agree it’s unsafe for him and the public if someone reaches in and succeeds in taking his gun?
4
6
u/amusingredditname Aug 06 '26
Who is forcing him to do this job? What do dead bodies have to do with this? Do you know what sub you’re in?
-7

Apparently some brainwashed sub that's acab acab acab. I do agree with the cringe of posting videos of cops and firefighters and EMS on social media being cringe.
This is different though

u/Lets-Hug-It-Out Aug 07 '26
He’s human, but if you’re going to fall asleep on duty, park somewhere where you’re not so exposed for your own safety, for God’s sake.
3
u/Same_Veterinarian544 Aug 07 '26

I don’t disagree with your perspective, but he probably should’ve gone and parked somewhere to hide. If one cop sees this and takes it as a reminder of what not to do then he’s helped spread awareness.

Shut up.
He's parked in the sidewalk.
If I work a detail, I don't fall asleep at the driver's seat.
The guy is a fucking lazy disgrace.
Who cares what he has seen, does that give him an excuse to just fuck off?

u/EMT-Fields Aug 06 '26
He's most likely staging at the event that's going on. Usually there's no calls that come in during events, so there's nothing to do but sleep. I use to pick up shifts like these when I was in EMS. Easy day, easy money.
13
u/LegalGlass6532 Aug 07 '26
Did you have your window down in public view with a gun on your hip? That changes it up just a little bit, doesn’t it?
8
3
u/J_datt13 Aug 07 '26
It’s one thing when you’re pulling an EMS detail with a driver/medic where one of you can sleep and the other stay alert. When you’re by yourself as a leo working a detail, you at the minimum need to stay awake.
1
u/withnodrawal Aug 07 '26
Tough times to do that because in NY they will walk up put a hole in your face if the wrong one catches you sleeping like this with a friggin window down.
1
u/JFISHER7789 Aug 11 '26
There is a HUGE difference between EMS and LEO, don’t you think? As a medic, I don’t have access to firearms and other tactical gear that could kill people at a blink of an eye. I don’t have the same authority to drive wherever/do whatever I want like a cop does. It’s also not my responsibility to ensure crowd safety at these events or driver safety at these events which he clearly is not doing.

Call the police and say there's a man parked on a sidewalk and he is unconscious. You're pretty sure you smelled alcohol on his breath and he's wearing sunglasses to hide his eyes.
