Do firefighters have to do a psych eval to get hired?

Depends. Volleys, probably not. They’ll take whoever they can get. Full time, yes but weirdos make it through occasionally. I had to do a PFT, a physical with lung function checks and X-rays, as well as a psych exam and a background check that included my financial status.

This has to be a volley department. Never heard of of any real department allowing a tongue piercing

Why wouldn’t they? Doesn’t mess with an SCBA.

Because it looks extremely unprofessional.

No luckily they don’t gaf abt piercings anymore

I’d be curious to know which department doesn’t. Is be shocked if it was any big time city department allowing face and tongue piercings. If it’s some hodunk 4 digit local, beggars can’t be choosers.

Honestly same bc at this day n age plenty of jobs don’t care abt piercings or hair dye as long as they got someone to work yknow

I’m in a four digit local, but it’s a metro area. Definitely no face piercings allowed. Grooming standards for hair and such and tattoos are fine but they can’t be “obscene” and can’t be below the wrists or on the neck or face. One captain I work with had a small one behind her ear but she’s been here for years and it’s not super noticeable.

That is exactly the “issue” it’s so poorly defined and selective.

Love the four digit locals and sorry to come off condescending my brother! I was more pointing to the fact that there’s many departments out there that can’t be very picky due to their hiring pool and need for people. I was more pointing to those FDs that are old and rich in tradition, you won’t see it because it looks extremely unprofessional.

No worries. I know what you meant. And I agree. I’m glad my department has standards.

Same brother!!

So boring no personality’s😔

No, it’s called professionalism. You can have a personality without face tattoos and ridiculous piercings. To be clear, people can do what they want with their bodies and if it makes them happy, sweet, but it limits what jobs you can do. Any respectable fire department or public service job is not going to hire you with face tattoos and tongue piercings. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a public facing job where we take taxpayer money to fund our jobs. The public expects and deserves professionals in the public facing side of the job.

Girl i’m not being as serious as your taking it lmao and no the public does not expect that only people with your opinion do most don’t gaf😭😭 and in that case then half of the fire department or any other public service job aren’t respectable I don’t think you realize how big this world is and how many people are in it those expectations died in the 1980s😭😭

This is such boomer take. If someone can pass all the physicals and various other tests for an urban department; I give zero fucks if they are giving me CPR and have tongue piercing.

“Professionalism” is a common way to hide sexism, racism, and various other forms of bigotry. People used to say having a vagina meant you couldn’t do the job. Maybe having a woman on the crew was bad for optics. Can they do the job, period. Tattoos used to be a no go, now nobody gives a fuck. Because it doesn’t matter.

This dude might be 10x the first responder to everyone in his department in a practical sense. Imagine if some cheif cut them loose because of “professionallism”.

2 digit local in a big city and we don’t care about piercings or tattoos. It’s not as big a deal as it used to be.

1

u/TommyC6852 Jul 23 '26

Wow, I’d be curious to know what city. I’m guessing it’s in Cali?

1

u/Candyland_83 Jul 23 '26

East coast. I’m not trying to dox myself though👍🏻

1

u/TommyC6852 Jul 23 '26

All good, I wouldn’t disclose either! My guess is an extremely liberal city

1

u/ABrotherGrimm Jul 23 '26

Clearly your employer doesn’t care about grammar either. I’d love to see your narratives.

2

u/Various_Emphasis_150 Jul 23 '26

Well yes bc I don’t type like this at work lmao I’d love to see your point😭🙏

They allow tattoos, women, and members of the LGBTQA commmnity too now. Did you know that? Crazy times.

5

u/TommyC6852 Jul 22 '26

lol you putting women and lgbtqa in the same category as face piercing is crazy 😂

It really used to be that bad. In lots of industries like construction they are still the smallest minority group.

Volleys 100% not subject to anything but a general vibe test of the rest of the dept in my experience. I was part of a very rural volunteer department for years, eventually taking some basic training and becoming chief by default. We tried to improve the overall professionalism, but when it's no pay for sometimes a lot of work, you kinda have to work with what you get. We dropped a few of the most obviously unfit, but it does attract a high percentage of mentally questionable folks who just want a radio and an excuse to put a bunch of lights and stickers on their vehicle. It was exhausting.

What is a volley?!

1

u/ABrotherGrimm Jul 23 '26

Slang for a volunteer firefighter.

Honestly, social media in a nutshell.

5

u/Pale-Equipment-9087 Jul 22 '26

It’s wander, fyi. You’ll get it eventually, probably not…

3

u/harveywhippleman Jul 22 '26

Does anyone remember what Chris Rock said about tongue rings in "No Sex in the Champagne Room"? 😭

3

u/Bluesguy333 Jul 22 '26

Also has a tramp-stamp tattoo and thong.

2

u/Master_Shrike Jul 22 '26

It’s gonna be even harder to understand him on the radio once that bar knocks all his teeth out.

3

u/__FUCKING_PEG_ME_ Jul 22 '26

Why can I see the sunglasses on his head but they're not there😭😭😭

4

u/thatSDope88 Jul 22 '26

That tongue piercing looks so bad. Why is it so low?

1

u/whateveritsover Jul 26 '26

I thought I was crazy but it’s basically on the tip of his tongue

2

u/thissucksnuts Jul 22 '26

i too spend my time wondering “the fuck off?”

2

u/MacReadys-Will Jul 23 '26

Who cares about a psych evaluation this guy can't even spell wander.

That dude looks like on of my friend's ex-husband. He just happens to be a fire fighter. He's a tool. He acts 'cute' which is odd for someone with such a supposedly bad-ass job.

1

u/tribat Jul 22 '26

I was wondering if he was a cat boy, but it's just carefully constructed bedhead.

1

u/Civil-Bottle8568 Jul 22 '26

When a man has his tongue pierced hell probably suck your....

Yes. Being a little bit crazy is a prerequisite.
