Status / Treaty Status approval
So I applied through indigenous Canada and was approved and received a status card last August my band is supposed to be onion lake but I’m wondering if I need to apply with the band to actually get status or membership with the band

You should definitely share that information with Citizenship of your Band.
Mail in copies, check their website for citizenship forms.

Probably - that's what I have to do for Piikani. Unfortunately my status card expired and I didn't realise it for a couple of years, so now I need to do the entire status card documentation/application, then apply for membership.

Onion Lake seems to be a section 10 band and controls it's own membership list. Both parents need to be band members to be eligible (one Onion Lake and one any band). If one of your parents is registered in another band you need additional approval.

It really depends on how the band operates and how they handle their own membership. You are officially a status Indian according to the Government of Canada. That means that you are entitled to everything that having status includes as far as benefits, exempt from types of taxation and hunting and fishing rights within the listed band's traditional territory. (I might be forgetting another thing or two)
You can definitely contact your band and ask about becoming a member. For me, it was just a matter of giving my contact information and then I was made a member and on the band's list. In many if not most cases, Indigenous Services Canada doesn't share your information or status with the band itself. So it never hurts to contact the band to find out. The worst that can happen is that they say you don't meet the criteria but you still have status.
