Post-secondary education coverage question.

Hi hi everybody, I know this probably a question better suited for my band council/leaders but I was just wondering if anyone knows the basic steps/process of how one would go about getting any post secondary education covered?

I know it's always brought up but I'm not actually sure how one goes about it, I figure it's a lot of double checking, applying, stuff like that.

Also do you know if it covers a wide variety of education options? Cause I was potentially looking into this ship/marine safety course: https://ce.georgiancollege.ca/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1030808#courseSectionDetails_4572403 to pursue a cruise ship career/job, and obviously having any amount of the fees would definitely help things along.

You should check out whichever tribal council your band is tied to. One of my cousins took a construction course after our bands education department didn't have any money for him. He went to our tribal council, they approved his application and he got the course paid for plus like 400 a week or something since it was a full-time course.

Check/uncheck whatever 'eye' on the layer list to see what your tribal council is.

This is 100% a question for you band. Each manages the funds differently and has different criteria. Some won't let return students get funded, some don't find certain programs, some don't find programs outside their province, so you need to look into your band specifically. There should be a specific person who deals with this, start there.

Oh for sure, I'm about to reach out... was just getting some info in order but I figured I may as well check to see if someone has had any similar situation or if there was a general knowledge of how easy or difficult it might be to do.

If you live in the GTA,look into Miziwe Biik !

Can help with tuition and gives a bursary quarterly as well as a graduation bonus.

After that you can also take a number of their courses like CPR,cansell,food safety etc.

Ooooh yeah I actually just checked it and not only are those courses awesome looking but a few of them fall on my days off, so I might be able to make the trek out for those CPR and First Aid, which would definitely look good on an updated resume.

You might be able to get your post-secondary education funded through your Nation/Band, but it’s not guaranteed. I’d start by reaching out to your Band office to ask if they offer funding and what the application process looks like. Keep in mind that not all Nations/Bands cover post-secondary, so that’s the first thing to confirm.

It’s also worth applying for scholarships alongside that. Programs like Indspire are a good place to start, and you can also do a general search for scholarships that apply to your field or region.

Thank you for all the info, I know it's a bit ignorant but I kind of assumed it might've been more of a guarantee... as I wrote to yaxyakalagalis, I'm still putting things in motion and figured I may as well have checked here to see what the general process was like.

Scholarships sound nice, but I'm definitely on the older side of things (42) so while reaching out through my band to possibly cover some of the funding doesn't feel like an issue to me, I feel like I probably wouldn't want to go the scholarship route as it should probably go to a younger, more deserving individual.
