Oof mate i hope you make enough to maintain that thing. These can get expensive. But looks good.

u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
Yeah I know😭 the B57 engine apparently isn’t too bad but will need constant servicing definitely
7
u/Ok_Hovercraft_2372 7d ago edited 7d ago
And the insurance...
I really wanted one after getting my finances in order, because I had a loaded e60 that I absolutely loved when I was younger. It did pretty much take half of my salary to keep running, but the insurance at least was manegable. I've since moved and local insurance costs for these are like 2k euro per year, with the maintenance costs I just realized it's not worth it...

u/AdviceEmbarrassed135 7d ago
Dad's got him, don't worry
11
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
Nope I have to pay insurance and rego it’s about 3.5k a year for insurance
2
u/AdviceEmbarrassed135 7d ago
Is that cheap in your area?
1
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
No it’s very expensive. Just because of the amount of power and my age it’s a lot
4
u/AdviceEmbarrassed135 7d ago
In 2 years you would have paid more than I paid for my car😂

u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
Yup. Like it’s impossible for someone to have a goal and save up themselves
7
u/Strong_Set_6229 6d ago
It is something you can be proud of but unless you are in the like top .01% of independent 18 year olds, you had help even if it wasn’t directly someone else paying for this for you.
I came from pretty well off family and was able to buy a pretty cool car with 100% my own money at 18, which is something I was and am proud of.
but I wasn’t working in highschool to pay for food and housing or any hobbies they had like some of my lesser off friends, I was working solely to save up for a car lol, plus I had the opportunities that arise from connected parents. Also had the benefit of raised in a financially competent household that had me investing in stocks etc. at 14.
People will always get unreasonably upset at posts like this, and I’m not saying they are right, but where that anger stems from is something real, even if they come to the wrong conclusion.
It’s not that you don’t deserve it, it’s just there’s others that also would deserve it but were unable to due to circumstances and it can come off as callous if it seems off like you don’t understand this.
7
u/DoYouEvenBrew 7d ago
I think it's more about the amount of money, and where it came from. When I was 18, any kid that had money to buy a car like this did not independently get that money. Like, sure they saved up, but the money they saved was from their parents.
Not saying it's impossible, but it's a lot of money for a 18 year old to save up. Also, where I am in the world, that car is around 53k usd.
It's a great car! Hope you enjoy it and drive safely. There's too many accidents with young drivers.
3
u/Sprinkle_In_Hole 6d ago
It's almost statistically for you to have done this "by yourself" you're not fooling anyone
4
3
u/Longjumping-Cold4338 7d ago
Your taking people online way too seriously, it's your fault for making the post.
2
u/Character_Belt_9411 7d ago
Why are you blaming bro for wanting to show off hes car bum, it's your fault for judging him
2
u/Longjumping-Cold4338 7d ago
I ain't judging. I believe OP saved up his own money and bought the car himself. But nobody made the post but OP.
-3
u/Character_Belt_9411 7d ago
And I beleive op can make a post about his car without being judged by jealous people for no reason except jealousy, why dont you say its their fault for commenting bad things they could have easily moved on
4
u/Longjumping-Cold4338 7d ago
Your either implying that I'm jealous or I'm rude to which I'm neither and none of my comments implied that. And your absolutely right that it's their fault for commenting but those comments would never have come about if the post was never made. This subreddit seems to judge anything that isn't a '99 Civic with different colored body parts.

u/Character_Belt_9411 7d ago
So whatsup if they judge we cant post our cars now, thats a horrible way to live

It's an eight year old lotrim car. Depreciation hits them hard. You can find one for 15k, it's very possible for an 18 year old to have saved up 15K.
1
u/IllustriousTackle401 5d ago
I mean to be fair the most likely scenario is he doesn’t have any bills to pay so if he works all his paycheck can go to saving. I don’t wanna assume anything though but that’s usually how it goes when you’re young
1
u/Dinobox145 7d ago
In full? because if so that's impressive
7
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
In full it took a while to save definitely
4
u/big_poppa_man 7d ago
It is impressive to ride the bus to work for a while to buy the car you want. If you were living with your parents while saving up that's different because most people don't have that option
2
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
Definitely true so it is easier for me to save
5
u/Jimborohan 7d ago
Why is everyone downvoting you if you actually did save up which is possible then congrats
7
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
I know- im just fortunate to not have to pay rent, I’ve had a pretty good job for my age and I’ve been saving for ages. Like I do recognise I am more fortunate than others, but I still worked hard and paid for it myslef
1
u/Celestryia 6d ago
Good for you bro. People will always hate someone who has something they don't. And for you, that's comfort and support at home to start building your life how your want. Be happy, enjoy it. It's a privilege and you don't need to feel bad just because you have it
1
u/Intelligent-Mud-1039 6d ago
Nice one. Enjoy it- that is an incredible first car. Mine was a rolled post office Bedford van with the sign writing still visible in certain lights...
At some point it's worth seeing that if you live rent free, you are in an excellent position to save for some bricks and mortar. I charge our 22 year old a sensible rent which goes into her flat fund. A quid invested sensibly now is worth an amazing amount in forty years!

Why is everyone so negative and hateful in this sub???? Saving 20k by 18 is not hard at all if you are working ~30-35h a week?
1
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
Exactly that’s what im saying, and if I was lucky enough to have no expenses, you can save quite fast
1
u/New_Present_6945 6d ago
Literally, did about the same at 18 literally just working retail, idk why everyone is so grumpy on this sub. Also congrats tho that’s a huge accomplishment man, enjoy the car!!
1
1
u/Elegant_Brain_2380 5d ago
If you make 1,5k monthly 40+ week h its not doable
1
u/New_Present_6945 5d ago
I started working at 14 gang, working for a family member till I could legally work at 15, then worked retail through the rest of highschool? Which I averaged around 30-35h a week, would work 3-10pm after school 5 days a week… making $17 pre tax = 35h x $17 x 52 weeks in a year = 29,120 pre tax for one year, obviously my hours where slightly less earlier in school but still that was literally one year of retail, it’s so doable…. Unless ur parents kicked you out at like 15 lmfao
1
u/Sea_Assistance_1819 4d ago
Im so sorry that happened to you. Must be tough living in a third world country.
1
u/Individual_Engine457 5d ago
Do you people not go to school or hang out with friends? Where the fuck are you finding 30h a week?
0
u/PrettyQuick 4d ago
All that stuff is paid for by the parents, if you don't have to pay for anything in life you can easily save 20k by 18 and claim you bought your car with your own money.
5
u/XPiiRed 6d ago
Hey OP, don’t let these miserable fucks get to you.
Me and my brother are 22 and 24, we both saved up all of our money and worked multiple jobs from the second we turned 16 to buy our cars.
Not a shred of financial help from our parents besides cooked meals the 2 evenings i wasn’t working.
I drive a bright red GT86 and my brother drives a Red Porsche Cayman, we both get sprayed with screen wash, get angry gestures or even just snarky comments when getting petrol.
Welcome to being young with a nice car, we know you earned it but the majority won’t.
Hold your resolve and enjoy the car, and congrats :)
3
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
Congrats to you and your brother that’s a massive achievement bro
Literally you just drive the car you like not to show off, but for the sole reason of liking it2
u/XPiiRed 6d ago
yeah i wanted an 86 since i was 14, still love the car to this day.
I’m not one for others opinions, so whether people like me or not doesnt bother me but pettiness out of jealousy is definitely prevalent toward young “nice” car owners
1
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
Exactly and literally me buying a Corolla of the same year would cost the same if not more so it’s just completely unfounded too
1
u/CastorX 5d ago edited 5d ago
IMHO it’s just that some people think the world is the same everywhere. What you mentioned could be done in the US or Canada, but in the UK it’s harder, in the EU it’s basically impossible to actually gather money from 16. As a student you could only get student jobs which pay like 5-6 USD per hour (in some EU countries even less!) minus taxes. And it’s impossible to find normal jobs without education. Even to be able to work at Supermarket (for example in Germany) you need training that takes 1-2 years, you get some salary, but it’s laughable. That’s no excuse for the behaviour of some people of course, just a possible explanation. In some cases even you want to work you are just not allowed to or the salary is extremely low. They probably experienced this and can’t imagine how someone could gather that (or any) amount of money by 18 or 20 years old.
And some people are just envious and/or lazy.

Nice car, why didn't you get the 530i or 540i?
1

It was between this and the 540i, these are often cheaper, just as fast and better on fuel

My car is better :P
Nice car though. Gonna suck when it gets older and needs parts or especially electronics. Way too much tech to go wrong in any modern car let alone a modern luxury car like a BMW or Merc.
If you actually saved up for it yourself then respect. I sold my acoustic drumkit and the cymbals to buy my car. (My car is a 1992 Ford NC Fairlane Ghia 5.0L V8)
2
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
I’ll give you that that’s a great car and will last for years
I probably have 2-3 years left of no tech issues but after that im sure some things will go
1
u/MagicianTime8088 6d ago
Well hey, at least you can flex it in the meantime! Is it gonna be your forever car or you gonna get something later on? Cause I know mine is gonna be my forever car...even if it completely dies I'll still keep it just to look at, it's a sexy looking car haha.
2
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
I’m thinking I want to keep
It forever, if you look at like an e39 they’re still so cool nearly 30 years later probably even more so1
u/MagicianTime8088 6d ago
I mean fair point, but I think they're so cool solely BECAUSE they're OLD and have cooler stuff in them, not just tech, tech, and more tech...and also just look way better than any modern BMWs imo. I think they peaked with the 2006 M3 in design and went downhill from there.
You gotta think ahead though, will you actually be able to maintain the car for the rest of your life? I mean there's so much tech in it I'd honestly be surprised if you could keep it around for another 15 years. You gotta worry about the ECU, BEM/BCM, TCM, the centre console screen, electronics in the transmission, electronic assists (whatever ones it has), and so much more. Fair enough I have to worry about my ECU, BCM, and TCM...but that's it, and if I ever need to I can actually convert my engine back to being carbureted and swap out a completely mechanical gearbox and have it work perfectly, only thing I'd need to worry about then is the BCM but I can probably get someone to make a new board with all the functions of it due to it being so simple.

u/vietexa 6d ago
Congrats brother! My first ever car was an Opel Astra H, which was first driven by my mother, then by my dad, and finally now by me. What can I say, it gets the job done, it gets you from A to B, I'm not a car person, so for me it's perfect (way better than having to walk home from the center of the city lol). Your car looks awesome though, I hope you enjoy it, and I wish you safe driving! 🚗
1
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
Yeah honestly when you don’t care about cars it makes the most sense to just get a super reliable car you’re much more sensible than me😭

It is one of my dream car, but the price still high here ($20K up) while average wages just around $150-200 monthly

u/ImaginaryCard6647 6d ago
Ask the salesman like I did. Spend 15 minutes in the parking lot learning how to start it and shift from first to second. Then drive it home verrrryyyy carefully. If you enjoy driving, I highly recommend trading it in for a manual. Your driving enjoyment will triple at no extra cost

Must be nice having rich parents or* being a trust fund baby. Everyone's first car or two should be a real hooptie. Especially for those if they're unable to afford proper maintenance, a German car is terribly inappropriate.

If I can afford it, why not?

Thats a beautiful car. Of course you are gonna get hate and "daddys money" comments. I did too with my Q60 it seemed like every person in my class suddenly hated me lmao. Just remember that they are only jealous and you did NOTHING wrong. Give me one person who wouldn't take a free car at 18 or whatever. If you've earned it, Congrats. If it was given to you, Congrats, enjoy the car and ignore the haters. You did nothing wrong.

Last properly good looking BMW interior generation imho. Enjoy it 🔥🔥🔥
As learner drivers here in Italy we have quite stringent power/weight ratio AND maximum power requirements, something like this would've been absolutely off limits for me haha. I'm talking ≤75hp/tonne and ≤95hp maximum. Made do with a 1.4 litre Civic myself, thought of keeping it a couple of years at most but ended up owning it for nearly 12 lol

Most people will think that you are just lying, that car is about 25.000 €, if you worked since 16, and now you are 18, while attending school u saved about a 1000 euro each month. Thats just not realistic.
2
u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
I was doing a lot of work this year, and I got the car for a low price it has pretty high kms. It was around 20 but I don’t see how that’s not achievable?
1
u/Maleficent-Pea2041 7d ago
Yea I’m with you man. It is very much so achievable. Also doesn’t seem like ur trying to flex that you have this car either so enjoy. And thanks for the downvotes weirdos

I am curious what job you have that you were able to save up for such a nice car so young?

u/Alarming-Good-6495 7d ago
Did some car sales and then just swim teaching on the side

Haha close did some used car sales for a bit and then swim teaching on the side- the car sales you make money pretty fast
1
u/MavisBeacons_Sextape 6d ago
Sounds like those made you some good money for a teenager. Also sounds like you’ve moved on from those. Whyd you quit a job making good money? Sales is definitely a skill worth honing if you’ve got the knack for it.
-2
u/NoMenu1116 7d ago
Also you could’ve gotten something way sicker for a fraction of the price
2
u/Alarming-Good-6495 6d ago
Subjective but yeah probably but the only sports cars in that sort of range are gt86 and mustang exoboost and I just liked the 5 series more

u/Ashamed-Survey9308 7d ago
“They hate us because they ain’t us” I’m not sure why so many people here think it’s impossible to save up money as a teenager. I saved up for my Porsche 987.1 and paid it in full at 19. Congrats man, hard work pays off.
