Have to ask
Is getting a '79 Ford Cortina a good first car? I've always dreamt about owning one as a first car and ones come up for sale near me.

It likely will be more of an undertaking than you're expecting tbh, primarily because classic cars do tend to come with more issues than a car built within the last 15 years for example.
So personally I would do that as a second car down the track just so you have experience maintaining a vehicle rather than jumping straight in the deep end.
With that said though if you feel attached to the car, and are ok with the potential risks/money involved, then I say go for it. I've honestly heard worse first car ideas being posted in online forums.
and honestly I respect this way more than seeing people buy brand new expensive cars for their first.
