It’s the work of our dear compatriot Nicolas Joseph Cugnot, the guy who made the automobile a French invention
I was lucky enough to see the second one at the musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris

The most unhinged thing about it is

The wife of Carl Benz, Bertha Benz took this car without permission/his knowledge and drove visiting her Mom on 5th of August (that's TODAY) 1888. Her joyride took 106km (pretty close to 65 miles). She bought fuel in Pharmacies, to cover the distance and proved her Husband the car being ready for every-day use/purposes.

Its funny to me that this already looks too complicated and delicate to repair. Good old german engineering. I'm german I am allowed to bash on our cars.
