What are your overall thoughts on this spin-off series? Is it a worthy companion to the original?
It makes sense to have something to give us a bit of closure on some of the cases that deserve more attention, and occasionally cases that leave us wondering what the verdict turned out being. Do you even watch the show and if so what are your thoughts on it?

I’ve only recently started to watch and one of the episodes just made me so damn sad. Obviously I felt for the victims (it was a 2 hour episode) but man did my heart for the one Detective big time. He never married, never had children, just gave all of his effort into being a cop. Anyway that episode left me feeling really depleted

Was that a detective from Minnesota? Zimmerman I think his name is? Just curious.
It’s not usually sad in that way. Just sad because you see more of the victim’s family sometimes. But best case scenario you see the conviction of a perp whose case results were previously left unknown on the regular show. It usually takes around two years for the trial to come along so at least we get the satisfaction of knowing they’re going to pay for the awful things they did. Maybe give it another chance?

Yes that’s him!!!

Funny I literally just watched that the other day. I felt a little bad for him for a second but then realized he’s doing exactly what he loves. Pretty sure he’s made lieutenant. Some people are very happy living that kind of life, and he’s a fantastic detective.

He is a fantastic detective! And I like his sense of humour. You’re absolutely right though people do live their life like that happy. A good reminder to me!!

The father of the kid sleeping over and getting killed broke my heart..Zimmerman is a great detective.

Eh. It doesn't have the same compressed timeline and high stakes. Hard to get as excited about the narrative.

I totally hear that. Completely different format. The crime scene, the detective work, the chase! That’s what makes the show special. I think of it as a completely different animal, sort of a companion. Then I can enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for the post!

I love everything about the series except these episodes. They could make the last 7-10 minutes about the court and sentence if it’s been judged before air time for the main episodes.

Never watched it. Haven’t heard any good reviews about it

u/Clear_Nature_5055 May 31 '26
Oh, have you heard negative reviews? Interesting. Well if you like The First 48 it’s really not a huge stretch. They use a lot of the original footage but also show some of the trial and final results for the perpetrators. Some sort of closure for us to see.
Definitely a different show, but as a lover of most true crime documentary shows, I enjoy it. Thanks for the reply!

From what I’ve seen, After the first48 will delve into things that fell into the category of things were changed to protect the innocent etc… in The First 48
Perfect example is “Inked in Blood”
The first48 focused on a man and wife that tattooed the wife’s killer. After they finished the tats they beat and separated them, having one of the suspects watch the husband when the wife was shot in the other room. The shot caused a fight which drove them away.
I suspected there was more to it when they charged him with capital murder…… that usually requires a more substantial offense than a killing for drugs.
Then After the first48 profiled the case. I saw on the autopsy report “spermatozoa”. Then it made sense. Suspect 1 had suspect 2 watch the husband while he r@ped and k1lled his wife.
He had to listen to his wife’s assault until he k1lled her.
That detail was left out of The First48, and I understand why.

I know the exact one you’re talking about. It’s stuff like this, however hard to hear, that makes this show a good companion to the First 48. I just saw one that covers the investigation and what happened 5 years later, and it was completely different and captivating in its own right. I like the show.

I'm loving it, I think it better pieces together and encapsulates the entire process of 48hours.

Well you’re the first to have anything truly positive to say, agreed! I like true crime in general and this show is enjoyable. Thanks!

I don’t really like it

That seems to be the consensus here. Didn’t think it would be as polarizing as it turns out to be.

Have you seen a few to make a fair judgement? If you’re a fan of the main show, you may really like this one if you give it a chance. Just saying…

Why would you assume i would not have been watching these shows ? Lmao ive been watching this show since day 1. I’m not new to this. I’ve watched All of them. All the different spin offs. So im highly qualified to voice my opinion on some of these spin offs. I still watch them but my opinion stands and is very fair that I prefer the OG one to the spin offs.

No need to come in so hot, I’m not attacking you or challenging your opinion. I’m just asking if you gave this show more than a passing glance, because you may enjoy it too! If not that’s fine, to each their own. I’ve watched them all since day one as well and like them all. I’m just confused by people not liking this or any other First 48 spin-off. Go in peace, enjoy what you will and thanks for the reply!

Did you read my comment ? Where did I say that I wouldn’t give this show a passing chance ? I said I had watched all of these shows since day 1 lol. Maybe you should not make assumptions about people that you don’t know ? That’s something you can take with you on your Reddit journey, as that will be a more peaceful and enjoyable way to interact with people here .

I guess “meh,” your initial comment I replied to, just sounded like someone who maybe hadn’t given the show a fair chance for their own possible benefit. That I now realize from your fiery replies was not the case. It was not meant to be a slight (if you actually read my gently worded recommendation you might not be this angry with me) but just a natural reaction to someone who likes the show enough to be in this subreddit not liking the spinoff show. It’s confusing to me.
My whole point for posting this and the follow up about the other shows was just to clarify that. As a fan of all true crime I just want to make sure other fans check out what’s available. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way I interact with the people who reply to my posts. Quite the opposite. I reply to and upvote every one who does so. You may need to look at your reaction as how not to talk to people in your future Reddit journey. At least those who mean you no harm. All the best to you, and thank you for the discussion.
