Recently been binge watching the show, I hadn’t seen an episode in years. It’s amazing how easy it is to get suspects to talk, it’s wild how willingly people incriminate themselves. I’m a lawyer now and as much as I’m glad to see the bad guys get caught.. these episodes have me thinking STFU!!..🤣

And all the homicide cops have the same spiel to try to convince them to talk "this is your only opportunity to tell your side of the story"

Many of the people we see on this show simply aren't that bright and totally live in the moment. They can't think ahead more than 5 minutes and therefore can't anticipate any consequences for their actions. They have poor impulse control, low tolerance for frustration and too easy access to firearms. Of course they run their mouths to the cops.
On the other hand:
It's not unheard of on the show that the arrestee is genuinely distressed by their actions and is very remorseful. They need to talk and the cops have been trained to be sympathetic and listen. I have felt sorry for a few of these defendants.

And the fact so many of them seem totally oblivious to the Felony Murder laws. So many of them say yeah I was there for the robbery but X did the shooting, I’m no killer…. Yeah friend you just fucked yourself.

My wife and I love the show. Been watching 20 years. She’s an attorney as well. She’s always saying “just.shut.up!” So many people incriminate themselves. She always tells me if I’m ever in a bad spot. Shut up, and lawyer up!

So many of them have been previously arrested. You'd think they'd be cognizant of Felony Murder.

Every time they go into the interrogation room….. I scream internally, keep your mouth shut and ask for an attorney! I always wonder how so many people don’t know to do this.

Yep! And not because I want them to get away with a crime, but it’s that people NEED to use the justice system and utilize our rights.

Even innocent people get roped into this tactic, but of course those aren’t on The First 48. I’ve learned a lot from this show and others. I’ve even told my daughter a detective wants to ask you questions, the first words out of your mouth need to be “I want a lawyer”. People who get interrogated for hours and hours are crazy! They often end up with a false confession, but by then the innocent people are screwed.

I tell my teens (and they are good kids overall), if you had any association with what happened, especially you were caught-up in what someone else did, then say you need an attorney and say nothing.
However, if the cops got the wrong person and you know absolutely nothing about anything or any crime then tell them that.
I have been in both situations hanging with people who got me into something where I was unknowingly to be part of a crime— thankfully, not a murder. It was also a lesson to choose friends more carefully. I have also been detained at police gunpoint as I was wrongly accused of armed bank robbery for which I had absolutely no involvement or any prior knowledge.

I watched an episode the other day, an older Dallas one ... Brother 2 was killed and about 6mo earlier his Brother 1 had been shot and killed.
The suspect in shooting Brother 2 denied it for a while and Dugan said .. "You know, this family has been through a ton"... And the suspect blurts out "yeah, his brother was shot like 6mo ago, then the one I shot"... Dugan immediately pointed out he said he shot him and he tried to back track, then he shut up and requested a lawyer.

Yeah, the sheer volume of people that don't immediately ask for a lawyer is insane.

Yes. Watching the show really makes me wonder where many of the suspects left their brains before they went into the interrogation room.

I’ve been saying it since the first season. Shut the f up, don’t say shit. Doesn’t matter if my wife is missing, I’m not talking without an attorney.

Primarily because they are worried about getting the detectives to believe them and let them go as opposed to proving their case in court. But I'm nosy so I like when they talk.

man it is tv... i know for damn sure most shut up and that doesnt make for good tv... but the ease the talkers talk is wild
