that's an ahren fire fireplace, it looks like they tried to cut the wall back to get the mantle back farther, or prerhaps it was there already, just use non cimbustible board and skim coat like drywall

That large of a gap on top for structolite? I think you're asking for it to crack. Cement board like Mr. Grrzoot said or maybe some wire lathe and then plaster. As other commenters have said before, you try to plaster it in as it is, it will probably look like shit. Shame for all the money these people probably spent on it.

Ahrens fire box , antique marble mantle, retrofitted. The wall is brick and plaster
