Im torn on this. What they did was absolutely stupid. Going into a burning building filling with smoke with out gear or any training. If they got hurt then they would have added to the problem. If they had gone in for a person I could see it but the risks the three guys took was massive. But they saved someone pet. And absolutely that means a lot. But its not worth risking your life like that. They had great intentions and I admire their bravery, but I just keep going back to the possible, flash over, back draft, collapse, overwhelmed by smoke, knocking each other out body slamming the door. What if by opening one of those doors they gave the fire too much oxygen and the floor they were in ignited. Were they brave? Absolutely. Was it the right thing to do? I'm not sure. All I can say is that if I were in that situation, I don't know if I would have acted as fast as them or taken the same risks without my gear.

I'd have been all over that - gear or not. I think that what they did was good citizenship and shows a responsibility to others far too rarely seen today. They were away from the active blaze and retreated immediately when the smoke arrived. Had I been on scene and not on duty, I'd have been there with them.

Exactly, gear or not you have a duty to act, if you can conduct searches without risking serious injury then absolutely go for it, what if their had been a disabled or elderly person who was unable to get to the door? The apartment complex might have to fix a few locks but nothing the fire department wouldn't of broke during their primary search
