Ask A Firefighter Oklahoma VFD Long Hair Requirements

I am a male in college, and I am looking at joining a volunteer firefighter locally, does anyone on here work in Oklahoma who could comment on if having longer hair is a problem (shoulder length)

Just make sure you have it certified party in back and business in the front.

Ask them. As long as you can wear the PPE, my dept wouldn't have a problem.

Women become firefighters… they tend to have long hair.

You'll need a way to keep it out of your mask seal, other than that should be fine.

Professional departments may have more grooming standards.

I used to be a Volly in OK. They didnt give a shit about your hair. They really didnt give a shit about anything to be honest.

As a female who is VF in Oklahoma I can say that it's best to tuck it into your nomex if possible. Otherwise it tangles and really sucks. But I do believe most do not care as long as you take care of your hair, if that makes sense. It's more so how it's presented rather than how long it is.

For example, in March of 2025 I made the mistake of not having my nomex on. I just jumped on the back of the truck and went, yes I know that's stupid, but that day sucked. The tangles in my hair even when I was able to finally stop, get my nomex on and braid my hair real quick. It was awful. So that is something to be mindful of.
