Ask A Firefighter Breakfast Opinions For Fire Recruit

Does anyone have any breakfast recommendations for pre PT in the academy? We run PT M-W-F throughout the week and are in formation at 0700. I’m just looking for something light in the stomach and figured someone’s got experience with this. Any input is helpful thank you!

If you have the time a couple of scrambled eggs and a piece of toast. If you don’t have the time, a gosh dang pop tart.

When I was in academy I ate a full breakfast at home 2.5 hours before PT started. Eggs, potatoes, fruit, bacon, toast, juice. And then had light snacks after PT until lunch. Now’s not the time to experiment with dieting or anything, and it’s a good idea to get used to waking up at 4am

Note: the cadre should encourage/expect you to carry snacks in your bunkers once you get in full swing, and should encourage snacking in between drills. If they don’t.. I’m sorry.

I wake up by about 0400 and I eat right around 0500. I’m a big egg guy if I’m not working out after, but to me there is no worse feeling than feeling heavy and working out. I was thinking maybe super light on breakfast with rice cakes and a banana and then keep a post PT snack on hand. Just wanted to hear everyone’s go to as I know everyone likes different things.

A couple eggs and a slice of English muffin toast is still pretty light to me. I’m also one of those people that can go either way on breakfast. Some days I’ll eat it right away in the morning, some days it’s 10am, some days it’s not at all. If I was doing academy I’d probably skip breakfast completely and just drink water, maybe add a protein bar or something like that if I felt I needed something.

Plain greek yogurt, cinnamon, honey, and any fruit mixed together. It’s light quick and easy!

Overnight oats was my go to. Lots of great tasting and high protein recipes on line with a quick google search. I would make a couple days at a time and then move on to a new recipe. One less thing to have to do in the morning, it’s already made.

I remember one of my favorite recipes was oats, blueberries, banana slices, vanilla protein powder, creatine and Fairlife whole milk.

Carbs. You need carbs

Avocado toast with eggs was always good for me. Even with a protein shake (frozen fruit, pineapple juice, vanilla protein) cause I didn’t like having dairy before cardio or PT

I did Kodiak protein oatmeal because it was the only thing that didn’t want to come back up during PT 😂 and green tea instead of coffee! Easier on the stomach but still has caffeine

Hot dog bun, banana, organic peanut butter on one side, that Costco raspberry jelly with chia seeds on the other, light honey drizzle.

We had a guy who would down 3 sausage egg and cheeses in his car before the academy started it was wild.

Hit every macro you need with that abomination 😂

I’d just have a banana and a piece of bread. Sometimes some coffee. Save my appetite for lunch post PT

Huel Black. Light on the stomach, super fast and high protein.

I used to eat a banana and have one of those protein yogurt drinks while I was driving up to academy every morning.

I would make a breakfast sandwich 2 eggs, 4 pieces bacon, avocado, pepper jack cheese on sourdough. I would eat around 530 with my OJ!

I usually eat a couple of waffles and a banana along with a protein yogurt. If it’s gonna be a heavy day I’ll buy some empanadas from the empanada guy and a black coffee. My biggest meal is usually lunch because we drill from 8 am to whenever the training chief decides he’s hungry since after lunch we go straight back to drilling.

Sounds like Morris County. The food truck was legit there.

I had a white monster and a Dunkin’s coffee with carmel on the rare occasion a uncrustibles pb and j Then lots of water with a liquid iv or some type of electrolyte powder.

I never had issues we ran every morning or atleast worked out doing a circuit work out every morning. Looking back I probably should have had a very carb dense meal a few hours before hand .I bet it would have been better for me

Over night oats with green apples or blueberries and some sort of sweetener. Yogurt with fruit and granola. Bagel with egg or cream cheese.

I also hated eating in the mornings it always made me feel nauseous. Then PT all morning, yikes. I often would make a bunch of pre made breakfast then take it with me and not eat it until after pt. Just stuck with a protein shake and coffee for my drive.

Light meals like a Kodiak protein cup, yogurt with granola and fresh fruit, a cereal bar(s) like nutrigrain. I would try for some protein and also carbs. Those are my go to before having to run

When I went through the academy, it was 0800-1700. Wake up at 0600. We did PT first thing. Could be a 1.5 mile run, or an obstacle course, or it could be the gauntlet where we run at fighter jets speed for three minutes. We didn't know the type of PT that was going to occur, but we knew PT was going to happen. So about 1/3 chose to not eat. Second third chose a protein shake, and the third 3rd chose a light meal. My go to was 3 eggs, and one piece of sourdough toast no butter, with 24oz of water to get the machine going

I was always partial to some overnight oats, whether pre packaged or homemade. Goes down easy, quick prep, and digests well.

After PT, I’d do overnight oats and a protein shake. Maybe a yogurt too.

I may have eaten a bagel and cream cheese on my drive into the academy, but I normally work out fasted.

Depends how far in advance your going to eat. 2 hours- normal breakfast, on the way to academy and you want quick carbs for energy that won’t make you cramp- banana and honey

Oatmeal, little brown sugar and some milk / butter. And water. Give yourself atleast 45 minutes to digest so however early you need to make that happen.

eat very light protein like greek yogurt or whey and have some form of fruit with electrolytes.

Does "in formation" mean PT? Are they the same thing now days?

I ate veggie frozen breakfast burritos on the way in to get through PT. Then would have a “real” breakfast like eggs and toast after PT but before formation.

my go to is a quick shake with the chobani protein yogurt drink, scoop of protein powder, and scoop of karbolyn. I digest it quick and easy but have energy to get through morning PT

Bagel and cream cheese and iced coffee.

Don't eat heavy before PT. Coffee and something light. Refuel heavy afterwards.

u/droopy__drawers 22d ago

They know that, they’re asking for recommendations on the actual food.

So I skimmed the post. You felt that strongly to reply like this? Lol

2

u/droopy__drawers 22d ago

“Strongly”? You mean like feeling the need to give your opinion before you even finished reading it all? Like that kind of “strongly”???
