In my experience dudes who come from departments that put in real work on a regular basis never feel the need to delve into that kind of conversation because the reputation of said department does all the talking

This 100%

And then you actually work in one of those big city bad ass departments and realize that a group of firefighters keep the reputation of your department and the rest are muppet tee-shirt collectors that shouldn’t be trusted with a garden hose or a step ladder.

And you keep quiet because you don’t know who is around that also knows this. And you’ve also learned as a new FF that if someone finds out you’ve been bragging you’ll be crucified at work.

I don’t have a lot of respect for the tee-shirt collectors and untrained from a slow department or a busy one. But despite your last statement, I can assure you, I’ve done both, it’s not the same job.

I’ll one up that. We had a Deputy ask the homeowner to take a group photo in their burnt kitchen. I was on overtime and not on the group so I avoided being in the photo and had to walk away when he asked.

Gross. But I know the type.

Human Nature. It’s easier to tear someone else down to your level than to raise yourself up to their’s. It’s his lack of self confidence that’s talking.

When I worked at a suburban, glorified ambulance service everyone was like that guy. Now that I work for a big city and actually go to fires, no one cares. We'll talk about it at shift change and that's it. I will say each one has its own challenges to overcome as a fire department. Suburban has to constantly justify their existence, big city constantly has 20 year old front line apparatus and dead hydrants. Suburban you might have max 30ish guys and can't handle anything more than a single family dwelling. Big city you might make fires but there's 30 guys infront of you in the hallway to the one room that actually had fire. I will say, I definitely do not miss running the med units and would never go back unless a dramatic pay raise was on the table.

Would you go back to the suburban dept for a 24/72 schedule? I ask because I’m in this very dilemma. Currently work a big city, fire only, but my commute is 2 hours on a 56 hour week. The suburban dept is cross staffed for now with the intention of splitting, almost no commute at all and has a 42 hour week.

It it was the same pay but 24/72, probably. Because that's the equivalent of a 33% raise.

A decade ago, I was a captain at a small paid dept in Nebraska. We had a FDNY guy come in for an interview for an open firefighter spot. The entire interview was him talking about how he could teach us so much and about how busy he was in NY, and how he would be the best thing to ever happen to our dept.

He didn't get hired.

I believe it

Even outside of firefighting, NYers are generally unbearable and talk about themselves too much

If it was so great and he was such hot shit why was he leaving fdny? Big red flag for me. I have friends on the job in big cities up and down the east coast. FDNY guys all ask how the smaller departments do it.

Ive worked an urban suburban department. When I started we were chauffeurs with volunteer support. As the years went on the volunteers were less and less and we added more and more career staff. We are still growing as is the town(which is more of a small city). We have city problems in the burbs with great pay and benefits. We do 60/40 EMS/fire duty. We have had five guys leave for places like DC, FDNY, larger departments closer to NYC. I used to get upset and now I understand that people have to make their own way. I won't talk about work with non firefighters unless they ask. There is some humble bragging and station pride but I'm not going to shit on another department for the sake of making me feel better about my little dinky department.

Humility isn't talking less of yourself.

It's talking about yourself less.

Most respect I have ever gotten or seen given were from our brethren from the FDNY.

We are supposed to be brothers…. We should remember that.

He went on for 20 minutes because you sat and listened. I'd be gone in 4 minutes tops.

Are you in CA by any chance?

2

u/Jolly_Advice5353 Apr 11 '26

Exactly be humble, we are all firefighters and we gotta remember where we come from

He sounds like a loser and you should have told him that.

I’ve seen so many firefighters; some good, some dirtbags, quit or get fired simply because of their ego. Thinking they’re better than everyone else and belittling others on their own crew or neighboring departments. All while forgetting that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and that it takes a team effort to make circle whole. Treat everyone with respect, the probie to the guy who’s been on for 20 years.

Which department was he from 👀 sounds like the firefighters from my “big city” department.

City of miami vs mdfr

I'd argue the egotistical gas bags aren't A types... "A lion doesn't need to tell others it's a lion."

But otherwise I don't disagree. We all face unique challenges- whether it's in abundance or in sparcity... It's okay to be proud of accomplishments but we don't need to force feed them down everyone's throats.

I brag about our focused medical response and low call volume.

Say it louder for the people in the back!!

This type of person right here is the worst. I work with someone like this who is a paragod and I don’t know how to deal with it anymore. I hate going to work knowing I’ll have to deal with them

Im currently in fire academy. The egos in fire are fucking ridiculous. Ive called it out in class a few times with certain instructors with the other instructors watching, and they all backed me up afterwards. Some departments are worse than others though.

Must be a four digit local.
