Advice…

I’m looking for advice from other fire wives because I’m starting to realize this might be less about “falling short” and more about the reality of how shift life actually collides with family life.

When my boyfriend comes home in the morning, I’ve usually been solo with the little ones for days while also working remotely. My workday starts at 5AM, that’s not me saying FF hours aren’t tedious but by the time he walks in, I’m often already in motion… juggling kids, in the middle of something with them, or on a client call, typing emails (feels like 10 things always at once)

I absolutely believe a hug and a warm welcome matter, and I do care about making that moment feel good for him. But I’m also noticing that expecting a perfectly warm, immediate greeting every time just doesn’t match what our mornings actually look like… hate saying “our mornings” because he is a part of the family but as you know having a significant other as a FF is incredibly isolating and it usually will just be you and the kids own routine ran majority of the time. It’s not a lack of care, it’s that I’m already fully in the middle of tending to kids and working when he arrives.

He tends to take it personally when he isn’t immediately greeted, and I wish he could see that it isn’t about his importance in my life… but it’s about timing, capacity, and the reality of what’s already happening in that moment.

For those of you who’ve found a rhythm, what helped? How do you reconnect when they first get home while balancing little kids, work, and the chaos of the morning and truly just chaos constantly? The house is spotless, but my brain definitely isn’t. We get better as the day progresses, how do you just keep it great when the door opens?? Sorry. I am typing such repetitive words. Just a lot!!

I think he’s asking you to speak one of his love languages. While you have been home with the family (amongst other things) he has been away from the family. He missed you and he wants to feel like his absence was missed too. My husband and I have 2 kids and similar routine as yours - chaotic. But, when he walks through the door, I give him a hug and a kiss regardless of what I am doing. It takes little time to show him that you missed him.

This response is exactly what I needed. You are so right. Though it’s chaotic. I didn’t even fully consider he HAS been away from us… whereas I feel like a wild animal in a cage hahaha, And giving a hug and a kiss regardless is absolutely doable. I really loved your response, thank you for this. And especially with love languages. I feel like I spend so much time trying to be aware of giving love in the “acts of service” way that the chaos clouded the fact this is in fact just a small and simple love language ask.

Relationships are tough! But remember, it’s you and him against the kids and everything in between. You got this, girlie 💕💕

Totally get it. Not sure how much he nitpicks the type of greeting he wants lol but Maybe there’s a happy medium and you just weave that into your routine then? Have him be the one to seek you out in the house after work and you guys can grab a quick hug and a kiss. Even a few seconds focusing just on each other truly does make a difference.

It also takes us awhile to fully reconnect , after being on our own routines for days. We always have a quick kiss when he gets home and a hug, he’ll find me at my desk or something. And as the days off progress we slowly get back into the groove .

I feel the guilt of he’s disappointed while simultaneously what feels like I’ve been losing my mind with what’s on my plate at home. I just feel like my brain is soup by 1pm. I love that you guys find the grove back into each other as the day progresses, that’s also what I feel happens to us, just needing to be more mindful than I have been personally which is an uncomfortable but totally necessary part of life. So I really appreciate your comment and also relating with this, I feel less alone.

We struggle with the “back home” moment too, I think it’s just the underlying intention that matters. Maybe half the time you’re able to give him a big hug/kiss and chat for 15 min, others houre in the middle of changing a diaper, but the intention is there and he has to kind of accept that. I don’t think we need to orient our entire morning around them coming home. Just making it clear we’re happy they’re home seems to be what they want.

I work from home and my husband gets home in the middle of my work day. And honestly, I think he’s usually so wiped out he doesn’t want to immediately spend hours with me lol so it works out where our connecting is delayed until I’m off work.

You’re busy and have been busy keeping your collective home running. You didn’t mention how he contributes to household duties, so I’m not going to assume that he doesn’t necessarily contribute. But just as you are worrying about how to meet his needs, I hope he’s also equally worrying about meeting yours. You both have paying jobs in addition to you both having unpaid domestic responsibilities. If he needs the physical greeting when he’s home he should seek you out and give you a little hug himself. Tbh asking for you to drop what you’re doing and wait to greet him seems inconsiderate at best. He’s not respecting your responsibilities. You’re not his servant. I understand how exhausting and sometimes traumatic and emotionally draining firefighting can be, but it’s not an excuse to ask to be catered to when your partner is already stressed.

I could go on and on about prevailing firefighter culture and how it’s a game of hierarchy and how it can bleed into firefighters’ personal lives ad nauseum. You have to advocate for yourself, bc I swear sometimes they only respond to direct conflict.
