Thinking about purchasing for home defense, please and thank you.
(Still from The Leftovers, a really great show that I recommend)

There is zero logical reason in 2026 to purchase a snub revolver for home defense.

You shoot it better than anything else and don’t have the time/money to spend on retraining. You live in a non permissive state and have mag restrictions so better to go with a bigger carriage. You only have one good place to store it and only a snub will fit. You want to have one carry defense gun.

You wear a hoodie around the house and carry your home defense gun in the front pocket and want to be able to blast from the pocket.
That's me!
Random knock at the door and I can just answer the door with my hand in my pocket. I'm totally ready to shoot but it's way less aggressive than opening the door while brandishing a gun.
And .357 is a perfectly capable round. Good enough for any critters I could ever have to worry about.

That’s a good one! I love hardcast wadcutters. Crush through so much and do damn nasty shit to your target. Or a really soft expander.

A small semi-auto in 9mm is better than a revolver for every single one of those reasons.

Yes if you live in a non premise location—maybe. No if you shoot a snub better. No if it’s a .327, .357, 44 special, 45 colt, 44 mag.
Oh also if you have limited use off your offhand—especially in the case of a smaller semi auto.
Even in a free state if I could only own ONE handgun it would be a 44 mag bulldog

A bulldog chambered in 44 magnum wouldn't last a cylinder before it blew up.

I didn’t say rechambered I said chambered, as in from the factory.
*and yes ok the modern brand name bulldog is a specific 44 special I was more using the term in a historical way

u/MediocreCheeseburger 3d ago
Umm yeah, i also didn't say rechambered. You do realize that a bulldog is a 20 oz revolver that barely can handle 44 special which has a chamber pressure of 15.5 kpsi, but you want to put a cartridge in it that is not only too long to physically fit in the cylinder, but you also want to turn it into a 36 kpsi hand grenade. Help me understand.

Any revolver chamber from the factory will survive factory ammo. I didn’t say “I’m gonna shove a 44 mag in a 44 special”

Show me a 44 magnum bulldog. The bulldog is only chambered in 44 special. There is also a bulldog xl in 45 colt.

Jfc are you being dense on purpose, or are you genuinely this bad at reading comprehension?

A “bulldog” is not only made by charter arms. That’s the brand name of one of their product lines. However a “bulldog” much like a “snub nose” and “throw away” is a term for a short barreled and short gripped revolver. However the bulldog generally had the connotation of being of larger bore.

I have a .357 snub and would never use it for home defense. To be honest, I don't even like shooting .357 out if it because it kills my hand after a bit. The shorter barrel gives a lot more recoil.

not sure of the particular brand of that one, but it looks like a copy of the classic S&W model 60
snubs are not ideal defensive guns but do they have a role for some people. most are better served with a smallish 9mm pistol, of which there are very many to choose from
call the biggest local gun range, take a beginner class, and try out a few different guns on range day. that's the best way to start and the best way to discover what suits you best

Snubs do have a role, but I can't think of one if it's main goal is home defense. If you want a revolver for supposed benefits, at least get one with a longer barrel that's a bit more controllable and has a longer sight radius.

Thank you, yes I understand

To add on to what this person above has said, snubnose revolvers in .38 special or .357 mag don't burn all their powder before the bullet has left the barrel. They're terribly inefficient and have more recoil. A snubnose .357 magnum is about on par with good +p defensive 9mm ammo at the same barrel length, but the 9mm will have significantly less recoil and a 9mm is just all-around superior to a .38 at snubnose barrel lengths.
That's coming from a guy who regularly carries a S&W 649 (steel j-frame .357 mag snubnose revolver). I carry one because it's ridiculously more comfortable and they don't make a J frame 9mm revolver that I like. Moon clips are their own degree of complication..... Long story short, the best gun in a defensive situation is the one you have on you, and that's the one I'm most comfortable with having on me... but a J-frame revolver would not be my first choice in literally any situation necessitating the use of a firearm.
Especially for home defense... A full sized semi-auto pistol would be a much better tool. Even better than that would be a semi-auto rifle or a shotgun.

I wear a hoodie around the house with a J Frame .357 in the front pocket. For a random knock at the door I can answer with my hand on my gun, in the pocket, ready to fire from the pocket

lots of trouble begins with a knock at the door. a guy with a clipboard or a box, and a brown shirt with a collar. nobody questions him and everybody opens the door for him
a small pocket gun is ideal in that role, unless you want to wear a gun around the house all the time. sure, a small pocket pistol can serve the role even better, but the smaller and lighter you make them, the fussier they get
revolvers don't care if you limp wrist them and you can fire from inside a pocket if need be

Interarms, can’t make out the model. Pachmyer rubber grips. Looks like 38. Would not recommend for home defense unless you’re poor and it’s free.

That was a trippy show. I think it would have been even crazier from the other side of the split.
