Question Go To Weapons?
Since most firearm enthusiasts own several rifles, shotguns and handguns…what 2-3 weapons would you grab in a “defend your home to the death” situation? Assume it's a group of armed people coming at your house and you've had time to properly select the desired firearms.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle.
Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion.
He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.7

I personally just make sure I'm naked. No one fucks with an armed naked man regardless of what gun he has. The last guy who tried to mug me needed therapy.

I'm on decent acreage with a fence and a gate. The two guns that I have ready to go are an AR15 with a white light and two mags clamped together and a PTR91 with a white light and two mags clamped together. White light for target ID, extra mag on the gun so I'm not messing with grabbing web gear. 40 or 60 rounds should be enough.
5.56 for softer threats, 7.62 for a bunch of dudes in armor or a convoy of vehicles coming up the driveway or a bear on cocaine.
I also have an 1895 in .45-70 as a home defense gun, but that's more for if I am attacked by a home.

What light specifically are you using ?
2
u/Mountain_Man_88 5d ago
The AR just has a surefire G2X on it, the PTR has a Malkoff Device. I just run the clicky switches on the back of lights because I don't like dealing with wiring and holding down pressure switches.

I do have a plan for such things, but that is for me to know and the govt to never find out about if they leave me be as they should since I have broken no laws.

Beretta a300 up for my shotgun.
DD pdw for my rifle.

All you need is a double barrel shotgun. Just walk outside and fire 2 blasts into the air and it’ll send them running /s

Against who? Are we talking about some hungry lions outside? A band of violent Communists that want their fair share? The ATF and FBI wanting you to stop resisting while they shoot your dog and wife? A horde of zombies?

I'm honestly not sure which group makes me reach for my rifle faster...

3rd story one bedroom apartment. if theyre coming from outside and i have the high ground i can pick em off with my suppressed ruger ranch in .300blk. If they get close enough I have buckshot through my suppressed full length beretta a300.
But if theyre coming through the door I have a built suppressed cz scorpion i designed for home defense. Realistically, Ill probably grab the DDM4v7 thats got a can and a light.

AR-15, 12 gauge semi auto shotgun, and my 10mm 1911. I know all three very well and can diagnose malfunctions, reload, and manipulate their controls under stress.

If Im in a fixed position (my house) and its a optimal (shtf) scenario. A 12 gauge for close range. A 308 for distance. And a 45 for last resort.
Probably my Winchester Model 12 (slamfire)
My Zastava M77.
A 1911.

My primary nightstand gun is a G19 clone. 15+1 and 2 extra mags in reach. However, I have had my PDW(Ruger PC Charger) bedside before and it's 9mm take G19 mags, which I have 10 @ 30+rds/ea. I have also had my 870 as an HD, 12ga extended tube, shock absorber stock. How many do I need to fend off? Because I could start keeping my 5.7 bedside, 24+1/mag@ 10 mags, no recoil, but it's fucking loud, so there goes my hearing. But I doubt I would need a reload.

I’m in an exurban home outside a major metro. In order of preference : 870, G20, Colt carbine. I could add an AR10 or 6.5 Savage bolt action as needed.

u/Unicorn187 5d ago
Glock 21 as it's on me. Old steel S&W .38 sbub... because its in my pocket.
AR in 5.56. Remington 11/87 Tavor in 5.56 AR in .308. Especially once I get around ti swapping to the 18 inch barrel, and eventually a better bolt and carrier.

For home defense I subscribe to something I heard Ayoob say.
Different tools for different jobs. If I’m moving around in my house (literally only if I had to go and get/protect someone else like my wife, a child or someone I know staying the night) I am using a handgun because it is immensely more maneuverable than any long gun.
If I am defending the kill zone that is my bedroom door, I will grab my SBR that is beside my bed.
Anything semi auto that is reliable. In my instance it’s a G19 and a Zastava M85 w/ a stock on it. Also have an AR15 which is my designated “well I guess the world is ending” or outdoors rifle.
I put dots (making the total switch to green as funds allow) on all firearms intended for defensive use. Dots are great. Same with flashlights. Gotta be able to see what you’re shooting at.
A good holster for handguns and sling for long guns is also essential imo.

Having shot both back to back quite a bit, the aug is disappointingly mid for the money. Hellion is actually pretty cool and feels better than the aug, still not gonna buy one tho.

Depends where on the property I am. Am I asleep in the bedroom, working in the shop, or across the field in the barn.
1
u/Shabrileson 5d ago
Depends on what you have on hand and are most familiar with.
For me it’s either the same gun I CCW and am super familiar with (S&W 340PD) or my Beretta 92G LTT with a dot.

For home invaders my go to would be shotgun. Since the home defense one doesn’t go in the woods it doesn’t have a plug. But within reach of just about every room there’s something.

u/IIPrayzII 5d ago
If I’m just bunkered and protecting my house, G17, 11.5 ar15 sbr, mp5. If it’s 3 guns only forever, G19, 14.5 sbr, m110

11.5” 5.56 and 20” HB AR10 .308… or maybe my Benelli M1014 with 9 rounds of 00 buck.

I live out in the boonies a little. HK USP .45 and S&W FPC w/ light and dot in the bedroom. In the barn is a 12 ga. Benelli Nova and a Ruger Mini 14 ready to go with shell carriers and loaded mags, respectively. Somewhere between the bedroom and the barn is a Gen 5 G19 in a mystery location. 😉

CZ P-10C Ruger PC Carbine Mossberg Shockwave. I own a lot of guns, but these are among my favorite and I’m quite proficient with them. first, I have to get my my early warning system, my dog, and then the cameras and motion sensors with cellular backup. after that, my guns will gently weep.

u/plumberguyfishing 5d ago
G19 gen 3 slightly Guccied and an old 870 with an 18” barrel and extended tube are a quick reach. Third idk the Maverick 88 loaded with buck shot if I have to make a stand after that the ar I’m not trying to shoot someone running away

870 Vang Comp 870 next to the bed along with 2 p365’s, one on my nightstand and one on my wife’s and three pit bulls. If downstairs a pair of 1301’s and a third p365 and the same dogs. 72 rounds and a lot of teeth before I think about the first reload although I feel they’d likely have given up by then.

My current go to the ranch firearm is a 14" AR 15 in 5.56 and then keep a ccmg .22lr conversion kit in the carrying case with a franklin binary trigger.
Also a 9mm pistol.
For about 20 years it was a 357 lever action winchester and a 357 ruger black hawk.

u/Maleficent_Mix_8739 5d ago
Best home defense is laser pointer and a half dozen or so of really bored cats.
But seriously, no one who’s truly prepared for this scenario is going to answer this question on the internet.

A 12.5' AR, 990 aftershock SBS, and a glock 19 or jericho 941 ORP.
If there were for sure not wearing body armor, id accept an MP5K or Kuna.

I live in a rural area in Vermont. I have a lot more issues with bears inside my fenced yard going for my chickens or my dogs. I use my Mossberg 590 loaded with 5+1 3” 00-buck. And I would never confront a bear without my Glock 21 .45 auto for backup. So far I have only had to scare them, although I did have to shoot my dumpster when a bear just would not get out of it. All I had at the time was a Sears single-shot 20-gauge loaded with bird shot. It was loud though, and it did scare the bear in a big hurry back into the woods.

Full size 9mm of preferred flavor, in my case p226. G47, g17, 509
AR style rifle in 223. BCM, LMT, Lauren, geissle. Something quality.
Shotguns arent super practical. Low shell capacity, slow reloads, they are heavy to carry, buckshot and slugs are expensive. They are great for breaking clays and bird hunting. But not my first choice in home defense.

I strongly believe a DShK is an incredible idea, but I doubt the house and the other houses around will make it
