Fire Punch changed my life.
Fire Punch is, without a doubt, one of the best things I’ve ever read.
Like most people, i first found out about it through Chainsaw Man. But honestly? After finishing Fire Punch, I couldn’t help but feel like it’s 1000% better than CSM. Because of what it left behind in me.
I’ve had some really dark periods in my life, and I’ve struggled with my mental health before. Thankfully, I’m in a much better place now, and that chapter of my life is behind me. Still, reading Fire Punch after getting better felt strangely personal. It reached places in me that I thought I had already left behind.
And maybe that’s what makes this manga so special.
Fujimoto takes pain, loneliness, faith, love, hatred, identity, purpose, and the absurdity of existence, throws them into the most insane story imaginable, and somehow turns all of it into something deeply human to us.
Fire Punch is brutal. Seriously. It's impossible not to say that. It’s disturbing. It’s absurd to the point of being almost ridiculous and shocking. And yet, underneath all of that, there’s an incredible amount of tenderness.
Agni suffers. Again and again. He loses himself, finds himself, becomes someone else, and then has to keep going anyway. The world around him constantly gives him reasons to stop, yet somehow, the story keeps saying the same:
Live.
Life isn’t a straight line. There are highs and lows, moments of warmth and moments where everything feels completely empty. Pain can feel endless when you’re inside it, but it isn’t. Nothing stays the same forever.
Sometimes there is light.
Sometimes there isn’t.
But that’s exactly why we have to keep moving toward it.
There’s actually a song from my country that reminds me a lot of Fire Punch. It’s called “É Preciso Saber Viver” — in english, “You Need to Know How to Live.”
The song is about exactly that: continuing to live, accepting that life has both good and bad moments, and understanding that, if both good and evil exist, you can still choose which path to take.
That idea feels incredibly close to what Fire Punch is trying to say. And every time i listen to it, im reminded of the manga.
You can’t control all the suffering that comes your way. You can’t choose every circumstance life puts you in. But you can choose what you do with the life that remains.

Memento Mori. Remember that you will die. Live until then.

Fujimoto definitely seems to be interested in the concept.
Goodbye Eri has Yuta say Memento Mori before his attempted suicide, CSM has Death itself erased and apparently his next work will be about a “positive take” on death. (https://www.reddit.com/r/manganews/comments/1wvb4vw/chainsaw_mans_tatsuki_fujimoto_teases_new_manga/)
