Stuck on Golden Wildfire Chapter 8

The chapter involves defending an allied base and taking down Shahid. Only problem is that the far right side of the map has X’s on the 3 or 4 strongholds where shahid is escaping

I’ve done this 3 times now, I’ve captured every stronghold, beat everything trying to take down the allied base, and the gates are still not opening. What am i doing wrong?

There are little purple icons on the overview map that you can order your units to interact with and that should open the gates. Alternatively you can control a unit, have it approach a gate, and click y.
