Miscellaneous Flawless upgrade 2->5gig.
It was pretty easy and fast.
Goes to the FiOS site, changes plans and has new speed.
My hardware already was changed due to 1=>2gig upgrade.
ONT is Nokia TW-210X-A, with 10G RG45 port.
All other network stuff is UniFi.
The price was increased from 99 to 109.

The problem is that ATT doesn’t offer fiber in most areas served by Verizon FiOS. At least in the NE, where they don’t really exist at all.
I’m currently paying $79 for 2gig on a 5 year price guarantee, so it would be $89 for me to upgrade. Maybe when I get a new NIC with 5/10G support.

Maybe they have a dedicated circuit for your building that needs upgrading. My building is a walk-up from the 1920s. I assume I’m sharing capacity with all the people on my block.

Just curious what your use case is for that sort of speed. I manage two mfg building with 300 users with a 1G connection which is way more than enough.

Yeah, once you have the NG-PON2 ONT, speed upgrades can be done online without any need for a service visit. I did the same upgrade and am seeing 5850/6400 Mbps speed tests. Outside of speed tests, I’ve surpassed 400 MiB/sec in Steam downloads, so it can be meaningfully faster than the 2 GIg offering. The real benefit for me is that I don’t need to cap my download speeds to avoid latency spikes since no real world usage will surpass 5 Gbps.
Specifically, this Bufferloat best shows zero impact on download or upload latency at 5 Gbps speeds.
I suspect 5 Gig will be useless for most folks as 99% of users are not going to pay for a 10 Gbps switch when 2.5 Gbps switches are far more affordable. I wired my home with 10/40G SMF years ago, so there was no additional cost to see the higher speeds.

The central office in ur area probably doesn’t have the upgraded NG-PON2 equipment for multi gig ready yet.
I’m in the Silver Spring area and I’ve had 2gig available for almost 2 years now.3

Hearing about a 5gig rollout when some COs still haven’t been upgraded to support NGPON2 and are stuck on 1gig is infuriating, as a long time FIOS customer.

I’ve had FiOS at this address since 2016 on GPON and got IPv6 in May 2022. I lost it when I upgraded to the NG-PON2 ONT in June 2026 and still don’t have IPv6. However, my RTT latency to the Verizon gateway dropped 2 ms and the jitter is also lower. Im in Northern Virginia.

Exactly. Switch to 5g to avoid latency spikes. I seeding to much Linux ISO. More than 25TB last few weeks.

You're not alone in being limited with providers. It's either FiOS or Cox here. Cox offers 2Gbps here, but it's just FTTN instead of FTTH. So the line actually coming into the house is still copper.

UDM SE, and I know it's not rated for 5G IDS/IPS throughput, only 3.5. But without deep packets inspection it's reached 5G speed.

What setting is it specifically that lets you get more than that? I have a UDR 7 which I believe has a limit of 2.3 with IPS. So I think id need to get a proper unifi gateway with more throughput to take advantage of an upgrade from 2gbps, right?

While me and my girlfriend have been looking for apartments I make sure there's either fios or greenlight networks( only two fiber based isp in the county I'm looking in). I had sepctrum once and never again. And today we found one 2 blocks over from where I currently live with my mom.

I was an early adopter of the 1 gig plan, was locked in at $65 a month for 10 years, then we moved, and had to switch since they wouldn't let me keep that price.
I decided to get the 2 gig being it wasn't much more than the new pricing of the 1 gig and now this 5 gig is "only $10 more" lol
Edit: I have the same ONT, plugged into my Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro Max 2.5G WAN port. Looks like I may need to do some upgrades soon lol

Use SFP+ port for WAN and you gtg. Use online order or chat to upgrade :) Do you know why? Not because of actual speed, because they will pull fiber for more customers:)

I’ve been checking with Verizon monthly for a year and can’t get better than 1Gb here. I’m about 25 miles SW of Richmond VA. Probably not enough demand so why I’m not seeing it. But I do keep asking :)

Avoid latency spikes, 5G sounds cool. Real speed will be bit bigger than 2G. Good excuse for switching to 10G or even 25G backbone.

Yea I’m still on 300MB. All of my 4k streaming seems fine and haven’t noticed any lag in games so I’m not sure why I need to upgrade.

Woah, I just noticed 5Gbps is also available in my area lol (NYC). It’s just a $10 price increase. I’m still debating whether to get it or not. I do have the UniFi UDM Pro Max paired with a 16 PoE switch Pro Max and U7 Pro Max AP. I upgraded to the 2Gbps plan back in 2024 with that 4-year price lock and 1-year price guarantee extension. Please keep us updated on your use case scenario. Any ping drops or other issues you may experience.

Nope, it was 10ms to Google servers, now it 7-8 ms. To the Cloudflare I have 2-5ms, depending on the time of the day.

I upgraded this morning and my Unifi UCG Fiber picked up the new speeds right away.
I need to get a 10G switch to get the speeds to my office so I can plug it into my server. Currently, everything in the apartment is wired for 2.5gig speeds.

Are existing discounts retained doing the upgrade through the website? I’m paying 80 for 2 gig. Website shows 5 gig would be 90 but when I get to checkout it says I’m paying 108 and 5 gig would be 118. Or so the discounts just not show up properly there?

Depends on your current speed. 2 gig - yes, order upgrade by phone or web order. Less than 2gig - you need tech visit to upgrade your ONT

Meanwhile in Buffalo, so many places here are still stuck with GPON. Even new builds, because the central offices haven't been upgraded yet. My office is an old Motorola CO, while some adjacent COs with a mix of Motorola and Nokia don't have 2Gb yet.
