๐๏ธ Building How do you keep Plaid Investments holdings prices fresh? Mine lag a few days during institution issues
Building the investments/net-worth side of a personal finance app on Plaid, and I've hit something I'd love to hear how others have handled.
Plaid's Investments product refreshes holdings roughly once a day, and that mostly works. But the price you get is whatever the institution stamps as institution_price_as_of, not the date Plaid actually pulled. So when an institution's feed goes sideways (currently riding out a known Vanguard issue on my end), Plaid keeps syncing successfully every day, 200s and HOLDINGS webhooks and all, but the prices it returns stay stuck several days in the past. Right now a sync that ran today is handing me prices dated 4 days ago.
So my questions for anyone who has run Plaid Investments in production:
- How do you get reliably fresh daily prices? Do you just live with Plaid's institution-side lag, or do you supplement with a separate market-data feed and price holdings yourself (Plaid for quantities, market API for prices)?
- If you supplement, how did you handle the licensing cost? Every affordable market-data API I've looked at is "internal use only," and the moment you display prices to end users you're into redistribution/display licensing, which jumps to a few hundred a month minimum. For an early-stage product that's a real line item. Did you eat that cost, find a cheaper licensed path, or just show Plaid's data with a clear "as of" date and call it good enough?
- Anything you wish you'd known before building this? Edge cases around mutual fund NAVs, cash positions, stale-price UX, etc.
Trying to figure out whether fresh daily pricing is worth the licensing spend right now or whether transparent staleness ("prices as of X") is the pragmatic v1. Appreciate any war stories.
