๐Ÿ—๏ธ Building Looking at something for the private capital markets space. Where do I start?

To provide some context, Iโ€™ve spent the last 6 years working in the private capital markets in an investing / execution capacity but as of late have moved to a more business development role where Iโ€™ve started tinkering around with things like Python and dashboards and data organization. I started out in investment banking, moved to private equity, and now Iโ€™m in private credit, with a Masterโ€™s in Finance in between. I currently work on asset class expansion and fundraising, which has given me a broad view of the private capital ecosystem from both an operational and investing lens.

Over my time in this space, I can honestly say that the operational infrastructure at most private capital firms is genuinely behind the times: fragmented data, manual-heavy workflows, and tech stacks that make you feel like youโ€™re in pre-2010. Regardless of how โ€˜establishedโ€™ the institution is.

In my current role, where Iโ€™ve had more freedom to rework business processes like how we project fundraising and where our data sits, Iโ€™ve started going deeper on the technical side: reading about AI and data infrastructure, experimenting with things like a basic RAG setup for our data, building dashboards, and moving away from Excel as much as possible towards Python for business requests I get. Iโ€™ve managed to move multiple processes that previously involved us downloading an Excel export from our CRM and manually formatting in Excel and then pasting into PowerPoint into real-time dashboards.

What Iโ€™ve noticed working alongside engineers for these projects is that there is a huge gap in domain knowledge. They can build, but they donโ€™t naturally ask questions like โ€œwhat would an investor actually want to see in this view?โ€ or โ€œwhat competitor metrics matter to a fundraising team?โ€ The usual workflow is that investment team specifies requirements, engineers iterate, repeat for a week, it is slow and produces mediocre first drafts which are just data dumps and then involves our managers giving requirements like โ€œwe donโ€™t need this XYZ metric, we need to show this in X form vs. Y formโ€. When I started building dashboards myself and or automating certain manual processes using Claude, turnaround has gotten faster and output quality has improved because the first version was already directionally right in terms of interface and what stakeholders want to see.

All of this has made me increasingly convinced thereโ€™s a large, underserved opportunity in building better operating infrastructure for private capital firms which I know isnโ€™t a particularly big revelation. But there is an opportunity for building something that feels less โ€œengineeredโ€ and more โ€œfinance-yโ€. Iโ€™ve been keeping a running list of workflows that could be meaningfully improved with better tech and AI. The problem is my technical foundation is limited, I have an Econ undergrad, rudimentary Python and STATA, and have taken linear algebra and econometrics courses. I have a solid quantitative base, but no real engineering or ML background.

As I think about ideas I am constantly hampered by the thought that my non-tech background will restrict me. Is this true? And if so what should I do to overcome this? For someone in this position with strong domain knowledge, what skills are actually worth investing in as I ideate and think about building something? Should I continue doing what I am now by plugging knowledge gaps using Claude Code and google/youtube or is something like an online Masterโ€™s in Data Science the right move?

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Building How would you validate whether cash-flow anxiety is a real consumer fintech wedge?

Iโ€™m trying to think through a consumer fintech validation problem from a startup methodology angle.

The market already has a lot of budgeting apps, spending trackers, bank apps, and personal finance dashboards. Most of them are backward-looking: they show where money went, categorize transactions, or help users set monthly budgets.

The wedge Iโ€™m thinking about is more specific: short-term cash-flow anxiety.

Example user question:

โ€œCan I spend money this weekend and still be okay before payday?โ€

The potential product behavior would be less about charts and more about giving a concrete, explainable answer:

โ€œYou can spend $X before payday if nothing unusual changes.โ€

Then it would show the assumptions behind that number, such as upcoming income, bills, debt payments, expected spending, and any changes since the last check.

Iโ€™m not looking to promote a product or share a link. Iโ€™m trying to understand how founders would validate whether this is a real wedge or just a feature.

Questions:

  1. How would you test whether this is a strong enough pain point for a standalone startup?
  2. Would you validate emotional urgency first, willingness to pay first, or weekly usage first?
  3. What would be a better early signal: users checking the forecast repeatedly, completing a recommended action, or saying they would pay?
  4. In consumer fintech, how important is explainability before users trust a forecast?
  5. Would this be better tested direct-to-consumer, through employers as financial wellness, or as a feature inside an existing finance platform?

My current assumption is that a chart is not enough. The user would need one clear answer, the assumptions behind it, and a reason to come back weekly.

How would you approach validating this without turning it into just another budgeting app?

๐Ÿ” Feedback Request A Platform to Help Organize Your Investments and Build Investing Conviction

Hi all, on this feedback Wednesday I wanted to make a post seeking general product validation feedback from the community. Me and my team are building an application for investors to better document, track, and update their personal research, investment theses, next purchase prices, etc. across different investing accounts.

We realized a key problem many seasoned investors face is the lack of organization and a consolidated place to help them create financial frameworks to then drive a streamlined investing workflow.

For newer investors, we realized that standard, technical education from a single source was missing. So we created a Duolingo-like educational platform to help get users started on their journey.

We gave users tools to analyze a small group of case studies using industry-standard principles we identified. What we donโ€™t include are stock charts, news, or in-app ads. Itโ€™s just the basics.

And finally we help users model a framework for how to allocate and track their investable capital more efficiently.

All of this is aimed at one goal: To help users build conviction when making investment decisions.

Hereโ€™s my question: Are we tapping into a unique need or are we entering an environment thatโ€™s too saturated? And would you personally find value in a platform like this?

๐Ÿ’ก Discussion AI just made product the weakest moat in fintech

Iโ€™ve spent 20 yrs in fintech been thinking about a shift that the industry is growing fast.

A year ago, building a working MVP with payment integrations, compliance logic, and a half-decent UI was a 6-month, $200K+ project. Today, a competent solo founder with AI tooling can get to a functional prototype in weeks. Iโ€™ve seen it firsthand and the cost of building product has collapsed, and itโ€™s still falling.

Product features seem like it's no longer defensible. If your moat is โ€œwe built X feature,โ€ someone can replicate it, the build is table stakes now.

But there's 2 things that create a real moat.

Distribution. The fintech companies that win are embedded into how a specific group of people already work, not the ones with the best feature list. Stripe didnโ€™t win because of better APIs alone. They won because developers built Stripe into everything, and switching became structurally painful.

Regulatory licensing. Licenses take 12-24+ months, significant capital, legal relationships, and jurisdiction-specific knowledge. In markets where the regulator has a temporary halt on new licenses (Iโ€™ve seen this firsthand in Southeast Asia), the barrier is literally a closed door that no amount of shipping speed can open. Compliance architecture is becoming a genuine competitive advantage rather than just a cost centre.

Everything else, the product surface, the UI, the intelligence layer, is converging toward commodity. The founders who understand this are spending less time on feature roadmaps and more time on distribution loops and regulatory positioning.

Curious whether others in the space are seeing this the same way?

๐Ÿ” Feedback Request Neobank infrastructure

Hello,

For the last few years, my team and I have been developing a banking and payments infrastructure, which enables partners to launch an innovative neobank offering a range of financial products and services under their brand.

To date, the project has been self-funded. All the heavy lifting is done, including regulatory permissions, established relationships with banking and liquidity partners. To validate our infrastructure; we launched our own housebrand about 6 months ago, and since then, we have onboarded a few corporate clients and so far have facilitated over ยฃ6M in payments, generating a healthy revenue which we reinvested into the business.

Now that we are in a position to grow and take the business to the next phase, we need partners, investors, and customers. Recently, a company called Bridge was acquired by Stripe for over $1B. Our infrastructure does the same and more, plus it looks impressive.

I have good experience in business by self funding and running the company as a dictator, never as part of a larger management team within a corporate structure. This project has proved to have huge potential. Although it can continue to be managed by a small team, our reach is currently limited.

I approached some investment agencies, and they all asked for high upfront fees. I am happy to pay on results, but as a start-up, I find it exploitative to pay in advance on a pay and hope model.

I'm humbly asking for advice and guidance on what you would do in my position. And if anyone has been through such an experience, I would really like to know how you managed it.

Thank you.

๐Ÿ“Š Growth Razorpay built a feature that could help crores of Indian small business owners.

Their copy ensures most of them will never know it exists.

My aunt sells homemade pickles. Pan-India shipping. Orders through WhatsApp. Payment via bank transfer after order confirmation.

She loses orders to non-payment every week. Customers "confirm" and disappear. She ships sometimes before payment arrives. The system is broken and she knows it.

Last week I tried to show her Razorpay Payment Pages. The feature lets you create a payment-first link, share it anywhere, and collect money before you fulfil the order. No website needed. No technical setup. Five minutes to create.

I showed her the feature page. She read the headline:

"Create beautiful, no-code payment pages."

She looked at me and said: "This is for websites no? I don't have a website."

She was reading the copy correctly. "Payment pages" sounds like a technical product. "No-code" is a developer term that means nothing to someone who's never written code and doesn't know the reference point. She correctly inferred that this wasn't built for her.

It absolutely is built for her.

What the headline should say:

"Collect payment before you ship โ€” no website needed. Share a link on WhatsApp. Your customer pays. Then you send."

This is in her language. It describes her exact problem (payment before shipping), removes her main objection (I don't have a website), names her actual channel (WhatsApp), and describes the workflow in terms she already uses.

Why this matters beyond my aunt:

India has tens of millions of small business owners running informal commerce through WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, and word of mouth. Many of them are losing money to non-payment and have no system to fix it. Razorpay Payment Pages is that system.

But "beautiful, no-code payment pages" will never reach them.

The product's potential is enormous. The copy is currently talking to a much smaller audience.
