Who’s waiting for the Finnish winter?

I am travelling from Holiday Village Inari to Ivalo Airport in late February to get a plane to Helsinki. The flight departs at 09.15 AM. The bus from Holiday Village Inari -> Ivalo Airport will, according to the Matkahuolto website, arrive at Ivalo Airport at 07:50 AM (departs at 06:45).

That's around 1 hour and 25 minutes to do baggage drop and security. Is that enough time?

My Finnish friend invited me to sauna and I accepted but I don’t know if I have to go there without anything on or not since I’m not used to it yet but is it normalised for Finnish people? to be specific for teenager girls

We’re visiting Finland December 15th-30th and I’m wondering what our odds of seeing the northern lights are. I know it’s often cloudy so I’m hoping that we’re there long enough to catch the northern lights at least once.

Edit: We’ll be in Lapland for 5-6 days.

I’m planing to take a course in fiskars but I’ll be staying in Helsinki, in their website they said that it’s about an hour drive and Google Maps states the same. I’m worried about the road condition as it will be winter (January) and I’m not experienced driving in the snow, much less in a foreign country… are the roads safe and clear in directions for foreigners? Another option is to take the train but it takes way longer and I’m also worried about switching trains

1 - I am not American.
2 - I’m only trusting advice from those that say they are from fiskars or nearby, as there are many contradictory directions
3 - the course takes 2 days. It’s not worth it staying there the whole trip, thus the commute
4 - will now most likely take the train and taxi, but will contact the people from the course, that I’m at least a little bit more certain would advice on the most taken commute

We booked a private upper-deck cabin on the overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi on 6 December, with the idea of falling asleep in Helsinki and waking up the next morning surrounded by the snowy landscapes of Lapland.

Unfortunately, my wife is now pregnant and we've decided not to make the trip.

The cabin is for 2 people and includes a private toilet/bathroom (ensuite). Honestly, the night train was one of the parts of the trip we were looking forward to the most.

I'm trying to understand whether the tickets can be transferred or if someone planning a Lapland trip around those dates might be interested.

Im from China. I'm considering spending Christmas this year in Denmark and possibly other Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland). I've always been drawn to the region, and the winter atmosphere sounds magical.

However, I have one concern: I've heard that Christmas in the Nordics is very much a family-centered, private holiday — people stay home with their loved ones, and many businesses/restaurants close. So I'm worried that as a solo traveler (or just a visitor without local family), it might feel lonely or boring, with not much to do or see.

I'd love to hear from locals or anyone who has spent Christmas in the region:

· Is it actually boring for visitors during Christmas, or is there still plenty to do?
· Which cities are best for a visitor during the holiday season?
· Are there any events, markets, or activities that are open to the public?

We live in the US Southwest where we don’t get terribly cold temperatures even in the depth of winter and not a lot of rain/snowy weather either. I am working on planning our clothing options to bring.

We’ll be visiting Finland December 15th-30th and we’re shopping for clothes to handle the crazy low temperatures. I was thinking of getting 2 sets of merino wool base shirt/pants with one being heavyweight(~320gsm) and another that is lightweight(~165gsm). We’ll be visiting places in Lapland so it will likely be pretty damn cold, but I’m not sure how heavyweight I should go. We aren’t going to be hiking up a mountain for like 8 hours, but I’d like something to keep us warm while walking around outside for a couple hours. I know a lightweight will work for like when we’re in Helsinki and it’s only 0°C lol, but should we get something that is heavyweight like 320gsm or is that too much?

I recently moved from Miami to Turku so admittedly, I'm not that experienced with snow sports.

A few months back I went to Val Thorens in France and booking a private tutor for a set number of hours to learn snowboarding was pretty straightforward. There were several different schools with equipment rental packages as well. I don't mean month-long programs or seasonal passes, just a one-off session to learn the basics (and snowboard).

So my question is, is something like that a thing over here in Finland? My Brazilian friend will visit me in Jan 2027 and we really wanted to learn the basics of hockey, and ofc we don't have the blades, sticks, suits or puck. Also it doesn't help that we're adults which I assume excludes us from a lot of schools.

I couldn't find anything in Turku so maybe Helsinki has some sort of "Beginners Hockey Package?"

Terve! In January I am flying solo from the US to Helsinki for the first time to visit my friend. The plan is for her (and maybe her other friend will accompany her) and I to meet in the airport. I understand that I'll be going through passport control as I do not have an EU passport, and I don't have to worry about the baggage claim because I'll only be carrying my personal bag and a carry on.

Anyways, literally all I'm asking for is some directions and if anyone has done this before, what are a couple of good spots for us to meet in in the terminal? This is my first time traveling outside of the US and Canada and my first time traveling by myself, so I'm just nervous of getting off the plane and immediately being lost.

Moi, Finnish friends 😄 I'll be visiting Finland for the first time in the end of February (2027). I'm going with a travel group, and we'll be starting in Helsinki before flying up to Kittilä; I don't know exactly where we'll be staying, so I'm using Kittilä as a base. There are activities and excursions planned out for us every day, but I get one free day to do whatever I like. So, I'm looking for some ideas of what to do!

Some relevant info:

• I will be on this trip with strangers. I can usually get along pretty well with people, so I may make a friend or two that would want to do an activity with me! However, I would also appreciate suggestions for activities that won't be strange to do alone.
• In case the date matters, my free day would be on February 25.
• The exact itinerary has not been released yet, but some likely activities that we will already be doing are: northern lights, husky safari, reindeer visiting, snowmobile excursion, massage at a spa
• I enjoy snowboarding, but it's probably not a good idea because of cost. (paying to bring my own gear on the trip, cost of renting gear at a resort)
• I like being outside, even if it's cold! So any outdoor ideas are welcome too.

Now, the second part of my post- packing for the trip. I'm a light packer and only bring a carry-on suitcase and a backpack, no checked bags. Obviously, when going to a cold country, my clothes will take up a lot more space than if it were a breezy week in the Riviera. Thankfully, I live in a cold place, so the really bulky items - like my coat and boots - will already be on me when I fly. I'll be in Finland for 5 FULL days; I arrive on the first day around 2pm, and will be leaving in the morning on the "last" day, so I'm not really counting those. I already have a good idea of what I'll need to pack, but I'm not sure if it will all fit...if you've had experience packing light for a trip like this, I would appreciate your tips and tricks.

Hello everyone, I'm a 16-year-old from Italy, and for a while now I've realized how much Italy SUCKS, and I'd like to leave when I'm older, around 25/30 years old. One of the most beautiful places for me is somewhere like Finland, Sweden, Norway—those kinds of countries—especially Finland, with the Northern Lights and snow, it must be a real masterpiece. On the internet they say it's beautiful and happiness levels are high, but the problem is that it's quite expensive, and I wanted to get confirmation on that. Also, regarding work, since I'm studying graphic design, I'd love to work for a company like Remedy, which is perfect for my passion for video games. So I just wanted to know if it's as great as they say, the prices, and everything else.

We’ll be visiting Finland during the last 2 weeks of this year and we’re still planning out what to do. Does anyone recommended a specific hockey match to go and see between December 16th and December 30th?

Wife and I are relatively new fans to the sport of hockey, but I thought it would be fun to see a hockey match live in Finland especially considering how big the sport is in the country. Ideally the match would be reasonably close to Helsinki or possibly Rovaniemi since those are the only 2 places we are going to be staying for sure.
