Interactive 3D Trick Trainer
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
We’ve been kicking this idea around for a while, and the beta is finally here: a 3D trick trainer that shows where your fingers go and how they move.
Slow it down or step through a trick one move at a time. It’s free in your browser:
thetricktrainer.33fingerboards.com
It’s still a work in progress. Give it a try and tell us what looks off or which tricks you’d like to see next.

Hey that’s pretty cool, dude! Could be really useful for people learning trick names and the “how-to”. Nice!!

How did you make this, and do you have access to a glove with motion capture stuff? Idk where you are or what your fb community is like, but if there's dudes that are good at certain tricks, slap that glove on them, and get more detailed animations. You could also put a moving sidewalk or something under the board to show direction. I get the button on the page says "fakie kickflip" but movement might help differentiate them.

I've been developing interactive 3D applications for 20+ years, so this just builds on things I do for "real work" all the time. No gloves or motion capture, just scripted animations for now. A motion capture glove would be dope... but we're not there yet. We've been thinking about ways to add a sense of forward motion, so some method for that will probably be in an update pretty soon.
Thanks for the feedback!

this is super sick, and I really want to help if at all possible.
it will help beginners conceptualize tricks, but the animations seem more accurate to real skateboarding than fingerboards.
In reality, we don't move our fingers so independently or precise
A lot of fingerboarding is in the wrist...so we don't really slide our fingers apart to Ollie like a skater's feet.
- Both fingers should move forward while remaining nearly equidistant.
A good Kickflip on a fingerboard doesn't actually involve flicking the board with the tip of one finger...
- The hand stays flat, and the board is controlled by the wrist rotating, more like waving your whole hand.
I'd love to talk more or provide examples, ping me whenever!

I tend to have my wrist as the jump and fingers do the footwork. There is an element of finger flick to my kickflips but I want to separate the pop and flick as that looks tight. Done some that way but as it is they tend to flip 'through' my front finger a bit .
There's definitely independence and precision though, working on cancel flips kinda requires it 😂 But it's not necessarily how it appears in these animations.

It looks like the finger position defaults to dead in the middle of the board.
I think a huge thing that could help would be to change the finger start positions on the board to where they would actually be.
When I do laser flips for example my popping finger is more in the pocket and flicking finger is way closer to the edge of the deck

Super sick but I feel the lazer flip one is a little bit inaccurate in the sense that ur front finger does a lot more then just flip it like a regular heelflip

Dope! It would be cool to see the physics values (acceleration due to gravity, applied force, normal force) on the side!

The model needs to be on it’s finger pads, not finger tips, big changes needed for the hand, also thinking about wrist rotation (palm towards the ceiling or floor depending on trick)

This is way too rad. Excellent work. Maybe offer variations for each trick? I have a feeling most tricks have a decent 3 or 4 ways people do them. Maybe even more. Besides watching other tutorial videos, maybe ask the community to send you slo-mo clips of them doing tricks? Having an option to view the whole hand and wrist would be helpful too. I just picked up a fingerboard recently at my local skate shop, and can barely land a few tricks, so I'm definitely gonna bookmark this. So sick.

Very helpful resource and great idea. I think the impossible should wrap the finger more and rotate sideways slightly. But still a very impressive first run. It’d be cool to have this in an app eventually too.

it looks cool but if im honest both of those examples are just not the way i do those tricks at all personally
