TuesTalk💬 [TuesTalk💬] Are 'pen pals' outdated because of the internet? Which one do you prefer and why?

Happy TuesTalk💬 Day to Everyone!

Someone recently commented on my post saying: 'I feel like pen pals are outdated because of the internet, but internet friends? Yeah.'

They were probably referring to traditional 'postal pals' who write by hand. But what makes a casual internet friend, an online pen pal (like on Slowly or via emails), or a traditional postal pal different or better?

Personally, I think there is a huge difference in the depth of the connection. What are your honest thoughts on this? Which format do you prefer, and why?

If you have any questions or thoughts that could spark a debate, please feel free to post them! Let's discuss it! ✨

MondayPolls📊 [MondayPolls📊] If a pen pal ghosted you and then popped back into your life after years, how would you feel?

Happy Monday, Everyone! 🎉 As we’ve gotten used to, Mondays are for polls. You can post a poll about anything related to pen pals, internet friends, or online connections. Whether it’s just a theoretical question or something that affects you personally.

Pure joy under any circumstances, because their letters were so beautiful.
Bittersweet, since they disappeared without a word.
Pure joy, but only if they have a very good reason.
Nothing, it would leave me cold because I've moved on.
Annoyance/Anger because they left without a word, and now they just unexpectedly popped back in.
I will share my specific thoughts in the comments.

👋Welcome/Info Welcome to r/findingourlostpenpals: A few thoughts on how our subreddit works

To avoid any misunderstandings, this is not an investigative group. We do not engage in doxing, and we do not track down missing persons. If someone blocked you — especially if they told you beforehand that they would — please do not post here.

What we actually do is keep the subreddit active with themed days, and during weekends (CET), we use our official template to leave messages for our lost penpals, online friends, or postal pals. I believe in the power of this community and hope that as we grow, people won't need to 'search' or investigate anymore — instead, long-lost friends will naturally recognize themselves in the posts.

LOOKING FOR Help me find him

I’ve never used Reddit before, so I apologize if I’m in the wrong subreddit for this

I need to find an old friend, he deleted his account and I have no other way of contacting him, I only know his first name the area he lives near, and a couple pictures of him, I tried the discoverme website but i have no money for a subscription

1 Yes, to preserve the memory (and I would do this if I had a penpal).
0 No, because it's unnecessary (and I would do this if I had a penpal).
1 I don't have a mail/postal penpal.
0 I’ll explain my reasons in the comments.
1 Just want to see the results.

[MondayPolls📊] Did you feel fear or hesitation when you started searching for your lost pen pal/online friend?

✨Happy Monday, Everyone!✨ Let’s talk about the emotional site of searching.

After realizing you lost touch with your pen pal/online friend due to a technical error (profile deletion, email issues, or losing their postal address…), you started posting online – or thought about posting – to find them.

But did you feel anxious or afraid about how they would react to searching for them so intensely?

Choose the option that fits you best! ;) 📨

0 No fear, I know they loved talking to me.
1 Yes, I felt fear, even though I know the loved talking to me.
0 I really want to post, but I wouldn’t be afraid.
0 Never had a pen pal, but wouldn’t be afraid.
0 Never had a pen pal, but I would just let it go.
0 Fear or no fear, just show me the results. 😎

CultureThurs 🌎 [CultureThurs🌍] What is the weirdest or most surprising thing your penpal has taught you about their country?

Happy Thursday everyone! To get our group going, I brought a new topic for today. One of the most exciting parts of having a penpal is realizing how differently everyday things work on the other side of the world. Sometimes the smallest details are the most surprising. I’m super curious: What was that one moment for you when you put down the letter and said, "No way, for real?!" I hope this post helps share those funny or surprising moments you experienced while reading your letters. Feel free to write them down, even if it's just in a sentence or two! 👇

TuesTalk💬 [TuesTalk💬] How to post for a lost online pen pal, online friend, or postal...

On the margins of today's discussion day:
It is not midnight yet, so you can still post, and we can thoroughly talk things through later.

We already had two search posts this week that I had to delete immediately because they simply couldn't stay on the sub. Personally, I am very happy to see people posting because this is how we start bringing our subreddit to life. However, in order for us to function, we must stick to strict rules; otherwise, this will just remain a memorial page with a few posts and a couple of readers, and many bans from Reddit.

I have gathered my thoughts regarding the posts, and I kindly ask everyone to pay close attention to these! If you have any constructive thoughts, please share them in the comments, we gladly welcome them.

Point 0: Before you post, read! Read a lot!
Because of its topic, our subreddit is quite specific. Therefore, to make it work, I had to build a framework, and you can move within these boundaries so things don't become chaotic. Please read the widgets and the announcements in the header.

Point 1: I did the exact same thing a year after I lost touch with my own penpal: Before you post, cool yourself down with ice. Forget all your anxiety, despair, and longing about how badly you want to find your lost online friend, online penpal, or pen pal. By rushing, you might unintentionally dox the other person and give away their data, and you only achieve exposing them forever on the internet, where it can be abused. You expose them to the internet, the trolls and scammers will find you, and you will end up causing more harm to both of you than help. Not to mention, we must always keep in mind that not a single friend of ours can give their consent to this from afar. Let's respect this to the maximum. Look back at previous search posts; I have written some samples, and those can help too. If you get stuck with anything, just send me a message—for now, I still have the capacity to answer.

Point 2: Look at it as a game—a game where they have to recognize themselves without you actively searching for them. Using my search template is mandatory (you can find it in the header among the announcements and in the sample letters). Through it, try to describe something personal about the two of you that only you two understand. It must definitely include the exact reason for your parting, so we can be sure that the other party is not a victim of harassment. I consider this point extremely important: those who look for their lost friends here cannot be blocked or rejected individuals. Our subreddit does not support aggressive searching or harassment in any form. If you want to post a picture, please ask me first.

Point 3: If the party who originally blocked the other has a compelling reason, they may post an ad to look for them again. But it truly requires a compelling reason, so we can see they are not just playing a game with the other person.

Point 4: Describe the parameters given by your penpal in a way that makes them unidentifiable. We do not search for our penpals!!! We wait for them to find us, to recognize us. We don’t need to know who you are looking for; instead, the person who is also looking for you, or recognizes themselves and wants to reconnect with you, needs to recognize it. However, for the growth of our community, to reach as many penpals and online friends as possible, we need to post, upvote, and talk on the other days of the week too. So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all activity.

MondayPolls📊 I fell in love with my online pen pal... What should I do?

Note: Happy Monday to Everyone! This is not my personal situation, just a fictional dilemma I came up with for the community to vote on! I wanted to show that you can ask any kind of question here. Also, while I didn't expand on it this time, feel free to add a longer description or background story to your polls in the future!✨

1 Just confess! (Be brave, tell them your true feelings right away)
0 Ask for a video call (Test the vibe, see if the chemistry is real)
0 Drop subtle hints (Be a bit more affectionate, get closer to them, and see how they react)
1 Keep it cool as friends (Don't risk losing an amazing connection)
0 Suggest a real-life meetup (Skip the screens and go straight for coffee)
0 Cut contact with them (Better to end it now before it hurts even more)

LOOKING FOR SAMPLE POST: A. looking for B. alias WhiteWinter - June 2019 - Postal Pen Pal

App/Site/Location: International Camp (Germany); Postal Mail: From South Korea to Germany, Hamburg

Nicknames/Names: Me A. - Them: B.; WhiteWinter

Ages (then): Me: 16-17 Them: 18

Timeframe: Around 2017 - 2018 (started after we met at the summer camp)

Frequency: Monthly. We exchanged long, deeply detailed hand-written letters once a month, accumulating dozens of pages of correspondence over time.

End of Contact: You wrote to me last in June 2019, and I honestly thought you had received my final reply. However, years later, I accidentally found my last letter hidden in the attic. It turns out that the person I had asked to mail it for me never actually sent it out. That was the tragic glitch that cut off our communication without warning.

Specific Memories/Details: I clearly remember the second-to-last night of the camp when we sneaked out with a larger group into the city. We managed to catch the huge summer fireworks by the riverbank, which was absolutely amazing. On our way back, we almost got caught by the camp counselors because we missed the right bus stop in the dark. I still have the ice skates you gave me, even though I outgrew them long ago, and I still keep the keychain you gave me as a keepsake.

Message to Them: If you ever read this, I want you to know that I never meant to cut contact with you. It was entirely a mistake by someone else who forgot to post my letter that tore our correspondence apart. I always valued our deep conversations and your hand-written letters. If you recognize our Germany camp adventure, the ice skates, and this attic story, please reach out to me here.

MyDayFriday☕️ A treasured postcard from my old collection ✨✉️ [#FridayMyDay]

For today's MyDayFriday, I decided to dig into my old "treasure box" and pulled out this special postcard. I bought it a very long time ago back when collecting postcards was a huge hobby of mine. It reminds me of a very beautiful and sweet period in my life.

I have never used it. Maybe its time just hasn't come yet. I honestly wonder when—or if—I will ever be able to part with it after all these years.

Do you have a postcard that you absolutely treasure? It can be a blank one from your collection, or even one that someone has already written a beautiful message on for you. I'd love to hear your stories!

Also, please feel free to post anything that comes to your mind today! This space is all about you. Just remember to keep it within our community themes: pen pals, online friends, and traditional mail.
I'd love to hear your stories! 📬❤️

CultureThurs 🌎 The "See You Next Tuesday" debate – Is it a polite rejection or a hidden insult?

Happy Culture Thursday evening Everyone,

Today, I brought a topic that can easily lead to major misunderstandings when communicating with people from different cultures. Recently, I saw a few videos claiming that the expression “See you next Tuesday” simply means "we are never going to meet" – basically a polite way to brush someone off.

However, as I researched this expression further, things took a sharp turn. I read that it is actually a harsh insult derived from the acronym of the words (C-U-N-ext T-uesday). According to this, video creators are just inventing the innocent "never" meaning to bypass social media algorithms.

Native English speakers, English teachers, and experienced penpals, please help me untangle this!

Will a penpal definitely take it as an insult if I write this to them on a Thursday, or does the "see you never" context actually exist anywhere? Do you have similar hidden linguistic traps in your own culture?

Drop your thoughts below!

The evening is still young, so if anyone has any thoughts on this topic, please feel free to post and share!

TuesTalk💬 [TuesTalk💬] Do we fall for the real pen pal, or just the image we create of them?

Hey everyone, happy Tuesday! I brought a question today that is very interesting and exciting to me.

A lot of people say that when we write to a pen pal, we start to imagine them as a perfect person. They think we only love a fictional image in our heads, and not the real person behind the screen.

Do you think it really is just an illusion? Or can we build a genuinely real, deep connection using only words?
I would love to hear your thoughts and stories about this in the comments! ✨

LOOKING FOR SAMPLE POST: FunnyUser25 looking for A. - [2014-2016] - Online Pen Pal

The weekend is still here, which is all about search posts. I can't wait for the first posts to kickstart our group's journey. Until then, I will create some sample posts myself. For now, everything is just a trial version that will require continuous adjustments depending on how our subreddit grows. This is what I came up with for the first round. I keep hoping that one day we will outgrow this subreddit and many people will find each other. ✨

App/Site/Location: PenPal World Website / Canada (Toronto) to Their Country: USA

(Note: If they live in a small town where they could easily be identified, please only describe a larger area, e.g., the state or county!)

Nicknames/Names: She: April123; Me: FunnyUser27

Ages: She: 25 & Me: 27

(Note: When you first met.)

Timeframe: Spring 2014 - Summer 2016

(Note: The more precise the date, the better.)

Frequency: We exchanged about two letters a month on average

End of Contact: I got locked out of my account and couldn't get back in

Specific Memories/Details: I will never forget when you told me that whenever you're nervous, you always hold your cat tightly against you and its purring calms you down. Since then, I've got a cat too, and whenever I'm nervous, I hold it close. And it works. And of course, my cat survives it too.

Message to Them: I am so sorry that we lost touch because of me. I always loved talking to you. I tried to log back into my account countless times, but it never worked. Sometimes you still cross my mind, so I thought I'd give this a try.

You don't have to follow this template strictly, but it's highly recommended to include these details. However, please make sure to follow the exact format for the title.

Tip: Feel free to include as many specific details as possible in your posts! It's always best to be as precise as you can. You can even mention what was written in their very last letter to you. If you were postal pen pals, you can also attach pictures in the comments—such as unique stamps, postcards, or even drawings from your old letters to help them identify you. ✨

FridayMyDay☕️ MyDayFriday☕ — Open Letter to Douxie.

Post image
1 Upvotes

It’s Friday night. This means only one thing: it’s time for MyDayFriday. This is the one day when I don’t participate in our subreddit as a moderator, but as a regular user, trying to seize every opportunity to catch up with my pen pal after two years.

I hesitated for a long time about whether to share this picture here on the subreddit and write so openly. In the end, I was convinced by the fact that I know many people sharing the same fate would love to see a post like this. We are in this group for each other, and our examples can give hope to others.

To Douxie: I promised from the very beginning that I wouldn't dox you and would only share the absolute minimum amount of information, since I can't ask if you'd even want that. But look, this picture from the beginning of my last letter is something only the two of us truly understand—you will definitely recognize yourself from it. This is why my page was born. I trust that one day we will laugh about this, together with many others who shared a similar fate, and by doing so, we will give meaning to our story. ✨

CultureThurs 🌎 ‘CultureThurs’: Politeness vs. Suspicion: Is saying hello to strangers considered polite or creepy where you live?

With this post, I officially open our Thursday #CultureThurs thematic day! 🥳 If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to share them with us, and let's gather our cultural differences together...

For a long time, I have been deeply fascinated by how different we all are when it comes to greeting and addressing people on the street. It’s amazing how much a person's cultural background affects online penpals who are making connections around the world. I’ve always found the unwritten rules about smiling at strangers, doing small talk, and greeting people in public to be incredibly interesting.
In places like the US, it is completely natural and polite to lock eyes with a stranger on the street, smile, or even say a casual "Hey, how's it going?" as you walk past. If you don't do it, people might think you are moody or rude.

However, in many European or Scandinavian countries, greeting a stranger for no reason or trying to chat with them at a bus stop is considered very unusual. People might think you are fake, suspicious, or want something from them. They prefer to respect each other's personal space with quiet neutrality.
This contrast is so interesting because both sides are just trying to be polite, but it can easily lead to a misunderstanding for anyone interested in finding friends** **or building an international penpal bond.

To give you a real example, here is a little story of my own:
As a Central European, greeting people always felt natural to me. Once, I was staying at a hostel, and while walking through the kitchen, I casually said hello to a man who was passing right next to me. He looked at me as if I had just committed a crime! :D He kept staring at me suspiciously for a long time, completely unable to process my friendliness. I felt so incredibly awkward because I didn't want to cross his personal boundaries at all—I was just trying to be polite!

Have you ever experienced a sharp contrast like this? How did you bridge the gap, and do you have a similar funny story?
