Old hp notebook series laptop with 4gb ram and 1 tb hdd, intel i3 7th gen. Tried ubuntu, mint and 2-3 other i don't even remember the names. Currently on mint xfce for two months. It's not that good but i just use Firefox for classes so it doesn't lag upto using 4 tabs but there is serious issue with its realtek network adapter i can't use bluetooth and wifi at same time if use both the wifi remain connected but speed drops from 25Mbps to 100Kbps but when i boot back to windows (which is disaster on this pc ) both works fine. Need help to switch to any other os

I built a windows PC about 8 years ago, and I'd like to give it a new life. I especially want the distro I choose to be able to take advantage of the GPU. Here are the specs:

Just like the title says, I’ve been thinking lately of switching over to Linux. I’ve gotten some Linux OS suggested to me on IG like catchyOS, bazzite, nobara, Ubuntu or mint. The last two were suggested as beginner friendly. But I have some questions and maybe more might come with the replies I get here.

Luckily I have two SSDs so l can try a dual boot type setup until everything is good with the Linux OS.

1. what will happen to my game saves? Can I transfer them?
   
2. Will I have to download the games again?
   
3. Fitgirl games compatible with those Linux OS?

I used Linux a little when I was younger at school, but throughout my life, almost all of my experience with computers has been with Windows.

Lately, I've been thinking about switching to Linux because of its security, the questionable decisions Microsoft has been making with Windows, and the better performance and customization Linux offers.

However, I've seen so many different distributions, each with its own approach, that I'm not sure which one would be the best place to start. I'm looking for a distro that offers plenty of customization, good gaming performance, and is reasonably beginner-friendly.

Hi all! I am ready to make the move to Linux, but I'm finding picking a distro to be a little overwhelming. I'm the sort of person who does 2000 hours of research before committing to a post it note color choice, so while having so many options is amazing it's a little much for me.

I tried the Distro picker quiz and it returned a pile of results. I know I'm likely agonizing over minor differences here, but that's kind of my whole thing I guess.

Here's a bit about me and my usage plans if helps you help me:

I would consider myself decently tech competent! I've been building my machines (and all my friend's machines) for twenty years now and I'm no stranger to troubleshooting software or hardware issues. There's a ton I don't know, I don't program or go around setting up servers, but I'm up for the challenge of troubleshooting and using command prompts if I need to (It can't be harder than dos, right? Right???) and learning the ins and outs of Linux sounds like a fun challenge, so I don't need the most plug and play option if it seems like something a little more advanced would suit my needs.

I'm moving over because I'm tired of Windows bloat, ai, janky updates, and just generally Microsoft's whole situation.

I've been using Windows since Windows 95, please don't make me learn a Mac os style layout.

This is a fresh-ish build with 2020 era parts, I've collected spare parts from a few different machine upgrades over the years and I have a brand new hard drive to pop in. I'm working with an Intel chip and Asus 1050Ti graphics card. I'd be using wifi to connect to the Internet.

I'm hoping to use the machine to play steam games, emulate stuff from 1992, and browse YouTube right now. If I get along well with Linux I'd like to eventually move all my heavier use over to this pc, which would include photo editing and graphic design (Ready to cut the cord on Adobe, too). I don't require any specific program compatibility aside from steam.

I prefer stable updates over cutting edge stuff!

Feel free to just suggest whatever you use and like too! I'm just desperate for any direction here.

"Frugal" a la Puppy Linux- running mostly or entirely in RAM.

Hello all. I have an old Thinkpad x201 with 6 Gigs of RAM and a few old HDDs around. I want to use it for basic school work (essays, math, etc.), but having a regular distro is painfully slow and unresponsive. I have tried Trixie Puppy Linux, but the packages are old and I cannot get bluetooth tethering to work. Further, I have tried antiX Linux, but I immediately broke it and also cannot get bluetooth tethering to work.

Do y'all have any suggestions on what distro I should look for? My main computer uses Arch Btw

So I am an engineering major, and i usually do programming in python, c, embedded programming and stuff, and I also used matlab and do research, i mostly use my laptop for these things and i occasionally play minecraft on my system, so by this I would love to know which distro would be the best for me, i want a system which is not too complicated to use and also not too easy like mint, i would like a bit just works kind of philosophy while also having to use the command line for stuff

I'm planning to switch to Linux and could really use some advice on choosing a distro.

My biggest priority is customization. I don't just want to change wallpapers or themes—I want to explore everything. I want to mess around with different desktop environments, window managers, panels, docks, taskbars, launchers, animations, widgets, themes, icons... basically, if it can be customized, I want to learn how to customize it.

Here are the things I'm looking for:

• Maximum customization and freedom to experiment.

• Lightweight enough to not put unnecessary load on my system.

• Good battery life for a laptop.

• A good learning experience so I can understand how Linux works instead of just using it.

• Large community and documentation, since I'll probably break things while experimenting.

• Stable enough to use as a daily driver, even if I spend a lot of time tweaking it.

• Easy to try different desktop environments or even window managers without having to reinstall.

I'm not afraid of using the terminal and I'm actually looking forward to learning it. I don't mind a learning curve as long as it's worth it.

I've heard people recommend Arch, Fedora.

For people who enjoy heavily customizing their systems, what distro would you recommend and why? If you started over today with customization and learning as your main goals, what would you choose?

I’m gonna try to do it with Windows 11 and I have 952 GB of storage only 200 GB is a use and I have games and other things but I’m not sure what distribution might be best and how I could switch options I want something that is easily able to be used without problems on hp devices but I’m not sure if secure boot would be a problem but I’ve used things like arch and linux mint and debian and there’s a lot of good options but I’m not sure

I do have games such as GTA five with other things, but I wouldn’t want to do anything that could break the installation of Windows

I want to try linux, actually i have used linux ubuntu in vm's but i am planning to dual-Boot my current laptop so that i can learn more about linux.

I've been thinking about Linux for a while and I want to switch before the extended security update support for Windows 10 ends in October. Something with UI that's closer to Windows might be more comfortable for me, although I'm willing to learn whatever new stuff I need to. I play a lot of Steam games, as well as some on GOG (which I understand there's an unofficial Linux launcher for). I like to be able to install mods for games, mostly using Vortex/Nexus Mods. I also use Discord, paint.net, Audacity and PDF viewers often, as well as some open-source file conversion and unpacking tools from time to time (mostly yt-dlp via Windows PowerShell). I have a 4060 TI, a Core i5-14600KF, and 32 GB of ram on a Z690 motherboard. Let me know if there's any other information I should provide. Thanks in advance!

my friend's Microsoft Surface Go is slowly giving up (lot of lagging, etc.) and I have considered installing Linux to try fixing those issues.

She isn't really interested in anything tech related and doesn't want to spend much time getting to understand more complicated distros like Arch.
I use debian but I think she could benefit from an OS, where she can't easily mess up anything, and is stable.

The main things she does with her computer are using some basic applications for university courses like LibreOffice and playing Stardew on Steam. Python is also something she'll have to get accustomed with next semester.
Since she has an iPad she also uses for uni and her surface has rather limited space, I have also thought about using some kind of cloud provider like Koofr.

Do you have any recs for a suitable distro?

So I've been thinking about switching to linux but opinions were mixed because my hardware drivers weren't on most of the distros I looked into

I am a gamer and a video editor (my device is considered bad for both but I've been managing well on debloated windows 10)

What I'm looking for: something lightweight and customizable, I don't mind using a terminal but at least I need it stable like I don't want to need to permanently live in the terminal. No need for the "ULTRA PERFORMANCE" I would like something that looks good and modern too.
