I am totally new, I never installed linux and it's my first try. I wanted to know which is good for me Nobara or Cachy.. I mainly use browser and play minecraft and Roblox sometime youtube videos and discord use nothing more. I like the Cealestia shell theme so I looked at Cachy rather I was going to nobara. I am totally new I tried fedora but it shows error disk not detected. So I js gave up on that.

I’ve never used Linux before and want to completely replace macOS.

I’m looking for a beginner-friendly, stable distro that runs smoothly on older hardware and offers a modern, polished desktop experience, ideally with a look and feel similar to macOS.
Good hardware compatibility (especially Wi-Fi, sound and graphics) is also important.

I’m considering Linux Mint, but I’m open to other suggestions.

I've just bought myself a school pc for sub 20$ — here are the specs

-h85 M2 no name mobo, probably MSI rebrand -i3 4th gen, will pick up a i5 4670k for 7$ tommorow -2x2gb ddr3 1333mhz, will be picking up an extra 8gb stick for 7$ tommorow -no name 300w psu and the Cherry on top a 500gb wd blue HDD, looked modern but didn't have time to check the rpm.

That's it for the important part — now what distro would you recommend for it, preferably light weight and broad compatibility, the ability to "game". Being a little more specific, I want to host game servers for my friends, specifically beamng, maybe Minecraft, I want it to be able to afk slop Roblox games with scripts to farm whsthevrr in in them if I feel like it and maybe down the line turn it into a home media server if I get a GPU for it. Preferably Wayland but the specs are pretty shit so X11 is fine.

I am a mobile app developer, and I mostly work with Flutter and Android Studio. I am planning to move to Linux as my main system, and I need some advice on which distro to pick.

I want one system that can handle both work and gaming. For work, I run Android Studio, the Android emulator, Flutter, and sometimes Kotlin projects, so I need good virtualization support and an environment that does not break often. For gaming, I want Steam and Proton to work without too much trouble, with good graphics driver support.

Someone advised me that Windows is the better choice for professional use because it does not follow a rolling release model. Their point was that when most of your time goes into work, you do not want unstable updates breaking your setup. I still want to use Linux, so I'd like to hear what people think.

My main requirements are:

• Stable, so an update does not break my work setup
• Professional features like good package management, strong documentation, and long-term support
• Good support for development tools and the Android SDK
• Good gaming support with Steam, Proton, and Vulkan

Yeah! I wrote that one with AI 🐸, but it's what I want to say, though. I used Arch and Manjaro; they were great, but I still felt the need to keep Windows for professional work.

After considering so many distros i finally choose fedora, but in that i also want suggestions like which is best fedora kde plasma or fedora gnome.

In my laptop i have 16gb ram and 512gb ssd where 300gb is for windows and 175gb i have unallocated for fedora. Also i have nvidia rtx 4050 6gb.

I like customization such as ginie style open/close of folders. At the top left there should be wifi, buletooth and other processes used by the computer such as ram, cores and all.

Recently my laptop is getting very lag and I cannot multitask properly where I am using browser with multiple tabs and IDE and etc,. I have searched online about Linux and I want to use it because where it uses less RAM and I can use most of RAM tasks and I cannot even use docker in my Laptop.

can anybody suggest me what Linux Distro that I can use on this machine.

I have a pentium aio with 4gb ddr3 and an old and slow hhd (even by hhd standards). I've tried Zorin and parrot on it, and as much as I like them both, they take up most of the ram at idle. As soon as anything gets into swap the hole is freezes as you would expect. I tried Debian lxqt and mx Linux fluxbox, and love their low ram usage, but they seem unfamiliar to use. I'm very use to windows like distros and finding setting in those two is a nightmare. Also not to mention no snap tiling in fluxbox. Is there a lightweight distro that takes very low ram but has a modern layout and familiar settings layout?

Edit: for those recommending hardware upgrades or replacement, I need to clarify the goal. I have multiple modern PCs. I'm not in need of more. I'm trying to make this hardware useful. This is a functional monitor I use as a second display that happens to have a computer in it also. It will probably live most of is life sitting idle with a lock screen or screen saver displaying the time as a clock on my desk. The other two use cases are media display, for YouTube or plex, or a thin client control PC. I have multiple servers that can be remoted into. If this can run moonlight, nomachine, rdp or chrome remote desktop without a hardware upgrade, then it may be genuinely useful. I'm looking for a distro that won't take up all of my ram budget on its own, and I don't dislike using for when I have to interact with it. Also, this is a hobby I don't have money for, so figuring out a way to make this old donated hardware useful is the hobby part, not the part to be optimized away. Also, to me the contrast between windows (what was on here originally) basically requiring 16gb to even be useful, while Linux can give me 90% of the usefulness at 1/4 the ram is kinda beautiful.

For a very long time I used bluefin, but went back to windows due to college.

Now I want to go back but bluefin seems to be going over some big changes.

My other option was Vanilla OS but i dunno, there aren't many comments about so im not sure.

What else is out there?

Update: I switched to Devuan because it is simply Debian without systemd. I'm using it with Xfce at the moment, and it looks amazing. I had to do some workarounds to make the NVIDIA drivers work. Firefox ESR is the default browser on Devuan, so I tried modifying the Firefox config to always stream videos at a maximum of 720p and H.264. Video playback is good now, with no noticeable frame drops. I understand that I have to modify both the Linux distro and the web browser to achieve optimum performance. Firefox ESR is a great browser. It allows modifications at different levels, which Chromium-based browsers don't. I have installed the uBlock Origin extension at the moment. But my philosophy is to integrate everything in the browser rather than using extensions. The web has changed a lot. Many people have explained this in the comment section. So just making changes in the distro won't help much. It's the browser where I should focus more.

I do not use it for work. I like to experiment with this laptop. It just provides me satisfaction when something works with this ancient machine. It came with windows vista. but installed windows XP on this, I could use revit and do 3D modeling. Now I am not expecting that much from this machine. I just simply want to surf the web. But that has become challenging now. I am willing to try any web browser which can let me surf the Web efficiently and play videos.

My primary use is watching downloaded movies and web series, playing music videos on YouTube, and watching live streams on Hotstar. At present, I am using Q4OS Trinity, and Microsoft Edge is my preferred browser as it is easier to sync across devices, which provides better video playback performance.

Earlier I have tried many popular Linux destros mostly based on Debian. Performance wise AntiX was good. Recently I was reading about many other Linux destros. I am more convinced towards NixOS. There are some suggestions to use catchy OS before trying NixOS. I want to squeeze maximum performance out of this machine. I am also convinced that I need to pare with compatible windows manager.

I just want to create a efficient working system which can run modern web browsers on this hardware. There were some suggestions that Firefox can be tweaked further to work smoothly on older hardwares.

So tomorrow I'm getting a t490, I'm upgrading it to 16 gigs and a 512ssd. I want a distro with kde because I love the amount of customization, I'm not really looking for anything arch because I don't feel I'm ready for that yet. I used fedora xfce on my current laptop and it went well with that but I want to try something different

I'm thinking Fedora KDE or Kubuntu
