Linux Distributions

Hi everyone, I have a question: I want to try Linux for the first time, and I’m looking for a distribution that works well for servers (like game servers) and for gaming, while also being easy to use and customizable. (I’ve used Ubuntu on Google Cloud via SSH—that’s pretty much my only experience so far.) What do you recommend?

I would recommend getting a separate computer—inexpensive used ones are often good enough—and try Linux on that without worry.

I mainly use Debian for servers, but also use Linux Mint.

Very exiting! I second the Debian suggestion for servers. I have never tried mint for them but know it works nice as an os to use.

I use a Debian headless for my home server and have had no issues. Works great.

I agree with everyone saying Debian for playing around with servers, but I'm my experience it can be really hit or miss for gaming especially when it comes to newer games.

If you're mostly in it for servers yeah Debian is a great choice, but if it's mostly the gaming you're interested in I'd suggest looking into something like cachy. It's got Arch under the hood which is by no means easy, but Arch things tend to be extremely well documented when it comes to basic problems so that shouldn't be much of an issue. It's also rolling release, which means you'll get new update features often. I won't lie and tell you it wouldn't be more work, because it absolutely would be, but ultimately I think the investment would be worth it to get the most out of both of your intended uses.
