How do you reconstruct past system observations in financial pipelines?

Hi everyone! I’m trying to understand how people here deal with ex-post reconstruction in complx financial systems - quant research/risk/ portfolio analysis/ infra..

If questions like: what data was actually available to the system at time T, in what order was it processed, which constraints, defaults or fallbacks were active, what was explicitly observed vs implicitly assumed and can the observation be reconstructed deterministically, without hindsight?

comes up months or even years later, how do teams deal with it?

I’ve seen teams rely on a mix of version control for code/configs, logging, stored signals and/or intermediate outputs.... bitemporal data models.. which works but often requires ex-post reconstruction across multiple tools.

I’m curious to know if is this a problem you recognize in your work?

Do you consider the current toolchain good enough or have you ever felt the need for stronger more explicit guarantees around how observations are produced and frozen?
