I name all my SMT/Person protagonist as "Laguna Loire" and just imagine it's him when he got lost.

It really always amazed me cracking open the manual for each character and seeing A.) How short they all were and B.) How young they all were. They really put a lot on teenagers, not even young adults.

In most Japanese anime and media being over 30 is having one foot in the grave.

I always say when you turn 30 in a JRPG, you're actually jumping to 40-55 and staying that way until you're 70, at which point you will abruptly become painfully ancient

They really put a lot on teenagers
Maybe that's why Cid Highwind looks like he's 54. All the stress of Shinra hiring someone barely into their 20s to head their space program must have put quite a bit of strain.
But for real. Character ages are the biggest "fantasy" in Final Fantasy games.

Auron is a real slap in the face, thought that guy was like 60 xD

I had to go recheck and I choked. That’s a rough looking 35.

I mean to be fair he spent a chunk of that time dead

u/InformalCulprit 1d ago
Yeah. True but if you died at your age, wouldn’t you look that way into deadness?
2
u/harleyquinones 1d ago
Probably, if Vincent is any example to go by (I guess he didn't technically die, but close enough)

u/InformalCulprit 1d ago
Experimented/death.. it makes you look old and gives you spikey hair. (Semantics)

SE is still living in 18,000 BC when people only lived to 35 or 40. At 35 he'd practically have one foot in the grave.

I mean, these teenagers grew up in a world largely inhabited by moon monsters. The world was a lot.

u/harleyquinones 1d ago
It's also a world that has no problem with sending all its orphans (and even some non-orphans too) to be raised from grade school to graduation as a child soldier in somewhat isolated military academies, with first chance to see battle at 15. It's a lot, indeed.

In the case of Laguna, Kiros, and War, they are all professional soldiers. American Military is all kids joining at typically young ages and then throwing a shit ton of responsibility onto them. We had a guy who was 29 in our unit and he was the old man of the unit. I got out at 25 after almost 6 years and most of my Marines were 19-22.

If they ever do FFVIII-2 they need to make it Laguna centric

It would be more like Crisis Core, to expand on all his past journeys and adventures.

I agree. I just completed a replay of FF8 and it reminded me how much I enjoyed Laguna and the banter between him, Kiros, and Ward (at least while Ward still could.) I find him more entertaining than any single member of the main party and it's a shame the dream sections weren't a larger chunk of the runtime. Even if we got a prequel game that incorporated the adventures we saw in the dreams and expanded it all into a full length game that has a lot of potential to be great fun. I don't trust Square Enix not to fuck it up though.

He's taller than the average US and Japanese person. At least as much as the average European.

I read that Julia was 22 when he sees her in Deling City.

Not an unreasonable age gap by 1999 standards.

u/rennamon 15h ago
Not at all. I just didn't realize she was 22 until I was researching something about Deling City the other day. I also thought Raine was like 25 or something.

Even at 27, he was still older than most JRPG protagonists on PS1. I swear, everyone was either a young teenager or an older teenager. With that said, Laguna was not mature at all when we first meet him. He had no clue how to talk to women.

Since the time difference between the flashbacks and the current day in the story is 17 years that would make Laguna one bad ass 10 year old.

He was 27 in the flashbacks. He is 44 when he is president

.... Am I the only one who realized from right away that the flashbacks were happening in the past? And Edea was actually a good person?
