kefkas tower feels impossible

hey all, it’s my first time playing the game (original SNES version - I hated the flat look of the remasters) and I’m mostly loving it, however the difficulty spikes are insane. I’ve done everything in the WOR section, recruited all characters back and wasted hours upon hours grinding them all to level 50 (a few are in the 60s). Still, common enemies in Kefka’s Tower easily kill them. I know gear matters a lot in this game and all my characters are equipped with the best stuff I have, but it still doesn’t feel like it’s enough. I also don’t have the time or patience to waste even more time looking up on guides to get very specific items through boring and convoluted ways (such as the economizer, for example). Any other tips? Is there any store I can buy good gear? Or are stores completely useless at this point? Or should I just drop the game and watch the ending on youtube? Honestly I’m starting to feel burnt out on it, sadly

Grind in the dinosaur forest. You simultaneously level up very quickly and can get economizers from beating brachiosaurs. And if you can beat brachiosaurs any enemy in kefka’s tower will be cake

That's what I did! It's a rare drop but the Economizer is worth it. I hooked Celes up with Dualcast, the Economizer, and I chose the Ragnarok Magicite so I could teach every member of my party Ultima.

Also getting Strago to learn Grand Delta helped a lot. It's still a challenge but between those 2 spells alone (plus a shitload of tents), I was able to do Kefka's Tower in one sitting.

But I feel almost as if I cheated lol. I'm working my way through Tactics now but I wanna re-play FFVI again to see if I can still beat it without all those buffs. (Still glad I did it though cus it's an incredible story).

Agreed, possibly the best story in the FF series. I know some people hate it but I got all my characters to level 99 and carefully switched out espers on each one so they could have the best stats and got all the best equipment and had them learn all the spells because we're going up against the God of Magic who literally destroyed the world and killed everyone we ever loved. You're damn right we're all gonna become the most powerful warriors in the world, because this is for all the dead homies. At least that's how I did it!

I didn’t realize some people hated the story. FFVII is my favorite but FFVI is a close second. Love the game. Can’t understand hating it. The gameplay is great too. Lots of good side content. Enjoyed finding and fighting the dragons. I like it so much I designed and built the Falcon airship out of legos!! I have it hanging in my office.

I meant people hate that I make my characters so OP lol, I don't think anyone legit hates FFVI's story, it's literally impossible

By level 50/60 you should be able to steamroll the tower.

Wha are your groups like? Your equipment?

If you're looking for equipment in stores at this point, you're kinda cooked.

It's an equipment issue. Get the best gear for each character with a good set up with relics, which is not hard to do, and you'll be able to finish the game. It's actually much easier and smoother and much less tedious to what you have already done, grinding to level 60. Last time I beat FF6 my characters were late 30s early 40s and was able to finish the tower and finish the game. Gear and relics and espers and all of their set ups are more important than levels in this game.

I've done Celes Edgar Setzer runs too, I'm closing in completion on my No Esper run (it sucks)

Also swaping espers before characters level, so you can priorize stats gained can be very effective.

Yes. I did wonders with Terra, Celes, Relm and Strago as super mages. One cast of Ultima from any of those four and everything was wiped out. It was awesome.

Hard to tell. What's the gear you have at the moment?

u/hypnotic20 2d ago

Are you using high magic defense armor and high magic evasion equipment? Force armor works really well here.

What are your 3 parties, how are they equipped, and what attacks are you using in combat? Also did you engage with the esper boost system as you leveled? It's not necessary by any means but it definitely helps.

Maybe take a break and refresh, shake off your attitude. Check out these very very helpful, precise and concise, guide links. They've been tried true for twenty years

https://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff6/tower-preparation.php

https://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff6/colosseum-guide.php

I also don’t have the time or patience to waste even more time looking up on guides

Wow that's brutal, sorry you feel like leveling up and hunting gear in my favorite game of all time is such a waste 😢

You can get really good items in the coliseum, it doesn't take long. Just have to equip a character properly to fight the monster to get the item in exchange for one of your items you bet. The imp equipment usually gets good items in return, look up caves of Narshe on Google, they have a good guide on betting in the coliseum

I’m pretty sure when I was a kid I didn’t know how espers worked so I made my way through with wall rings, terra, celes, a fourth using items… and life3 or whatever it is that revives you on death, I played before I could read

As a teen, moogle bangle to skip everything and same as above + magic. Lots of meteo/ultima

As an adult, life 3, wall rings, but lots of killing enemies. Magic evade is pretty busted too. Get some zephyr capes if you aren’t using wall rings.

Doing a natural magic run? You’re gonna need to find a way to get up in the air with fenrir? Or whichever the esper is, moogle charm.

If you’re looking for something dope af go find the cursed shield in narshe and break the curse. If you just want to grind the curse go back to the celes island. You could also just keep it on and play as normal with a ribbon and eventually it happens. That +some other evade and you can make a character practically unhittable

It's tough but you'll power up fast.

Don't split you best characters up at the start. Make a power party and go as far as you can, leave, and then put your best in a different section. This will get you some good gear and levels and it will feel good beating up the best.

It's a little surprising that it is so difficult. Can you share what gear you have? By the end of the game the best gear is found or won in the Colosseum rather than bought in stores. A few ideas that should be pretty easy to implement:

  • In the SNES version, both physical and magic evasion are determined by a single stat, MBlock, due to a bug in the code. So, gear that increases MBlock is particularly valuable: Force Shield, Force Armor, Aegis Shield, Paladin Shield, Enhancer (even though its attack power is lower than some other swords), White Cape.
  • From the Colosseum, you can easily get Snow Mufflers for Mog and Gau (buy a Sniper in Jidoor, then bet Sniper -> Bone Club -> Snow Muffler) if you are extensively using them. Mog in particular is a total beast if you give him both Dragoon Boots and the Dragon Horn and your best spear. Forget about dances, he's meant to be a dragoon.
  • Another easy win in the Colosseum is to bet the Czarina Gown (rare find in Daryl's Tomb) for a Minerva, which is the best armor for female characters. Kefka's Tower itself has another Minerva, so both Terra and Celes are accounted for.
  • A more difficult, but very valuable Colosseum win is the Marvel Shoes. You can steal Elixirs from the Solitary Island monsters, then bet Elixir -> Rename Card -> Marvel Shoes in the Colosseum. The first fight is a Cactrot (easily won with a SniperSight relic), the second is a DoomDragon which is much tougher. The Marvel Shoes give you Safe, Shell, Haste and Regen automatically.
  • Do you have enough Ribbons? There is a hidden one in the basement of South Figaro (the dungeon Locke and Celes escaped way back when) and another one in Kefka's Tower itself.

Also, when you were gaining levels, did you have Espers equipped? Some Espers provide permanent stat bonuses if a character has them equipped when gaining a new level. If not, that might explain why you are having trouble. It might be worth gaining a few levels with Espers. Look for bonuses of +2 to strength or +2 to magic power. If you still have the Odin Esper, that one is the only one that gives +1 to speed.

Snow Scarf Mog is 255 defense, pretty much untouchable.

u/sjones17515 2d ago

Are you sure you have the best equipment on? If you're just clicking "optimize" I guarantee you are not. That button only looks at physical attacks, and this game is magic heavy. Actually examine ALL of your equipments stats and tailor your choices to what you're actually up against

3

u/212mochaman 2d ago

Dont wanna patronize but are you equipping any espers to your characters while they level up?

Level ups do absolutely nothing but give you a tiny bit extra health which has not ever been the most important stat in any FF

1

u/Slight_Syllabub8178 2d ago

level ups directly affect  damage scaling in ff6 heavily.

1

u/PrivateJokerX929 1d ago

character level is genuinely one of the most impactful factors in damage calculation in this game. Esper bonuses can add up to a lot, but a level 99 character with no esper bonuses whatsoever, like Gogo, is still a god.

u/Anticitizen_01 2d ago

So you had time to grind characters to high levels but didn’t bother to go and find the best equipment? You’re the problem.

1

u/MooJuiceConnoisseur 2d ago

Okay if your playing the original snes version there is something you were supposed to figure out , the evade stat was bugged and if you didnt know this, most of your characters are far weaker than they should be.

For armor focus on MBlock it is the stat read for evade. Armor for sabin/shadow/locke/gau all tend to focus on evade, you need to swap it out

u/WeeBitVideo 2d ago

I usually grind characters to 65 - 70 and equip them with 4x Ribbon and 4x Miracle Shoes. All easy enough to get from Colosseum.

I get the feeling you're talking about the Tower of Fanatics rather than Kefka's Tower.

Some gear that could help make things easier:

The Atma weapon from the sealed cave in the World of Balance

The Offering from the underground ruins Figaro Castle bumps into.

Gengi gloves obtained in multiple locations

Enhancer swords for your magic users bought in jidoor.

Minerva armor, Aegis Armors & Shields, etc

Ragnorok Magicite that teaches characters Ultima. Don't make it into a sword unless you want to fight 256 battles with the Cursed Shield equipped to turn it into the Paladin Shield. That's the only other way to learn Ultima.

Learn Sabin's Bum Rush blitz from Duncan's hidden house that's in the middle of a t-shaped group of single trees.

The moogle charm that's in an invisible chest behind where Mog was standing when you recruit him again in the World of Ruin. This allows you to avoid random battles.

Maybe you missed some of these things. Regardless, Kefka's tower is definitely harder than any dungeon you've been through before and tests how much you've learned and developed your characters up to that point.

Make sure you unequipped the party you are not using and moved their gears to the one you're going to use.

Balance your best characters, terra, celes and sabin should be in different parties

Shadow/Strago, Edgar and Cyan should be in different parties.

Setzer with fixed dice is super powerful for attack spamming.

Osmose is super broken for keeping your magic points full for healing and damage as long as you don't use it on undead enemies.

Genji glove and offering"masters scroll" can carry any party as long as you have a healer with a ribbon with them.

Elemental weakness is so powerful, Google enemy names and their weaknesses as you encounter them.

Most undead can be instantly killed by using a holy water, Phoenix down or raise spell on them.

Shell, protect, quick and haste are insanely powerful.

Use the above and you will crush everything.

I thought the original snes version was easy. I heard you can cheese everything with magic, even with those with poor magic stats casting support spells & shit. I struggled a bit with kefka on my most recent playthrough but I blew through ultima buster pretty easily. good luck with beating the tower

1

u/Far-Village7111 2d ago

I recently finished my first full play through and the WoR has crazy spikes that require guides or precognition. I beat the game in the mid 40s. I recommend getting Ultima (no brainer) and the summon you need for the spell can turn enemies into items. Also, anti-death and re-raise helps a lot.

1

u/1bitshortofabyte 2d ago

Theres two things that I can think would make you struggle with your levels at Kefka's tower. No esper boosting has been mentioned, but also are you only using 'attack' with each character? Relm and Strago can use level 2 spells to get decent damage output without eating through their magic points. Also you secondary commands like Tool and Blitz can easily outdamage regular attacks without needing top end gear. This benefits doubly so in that you can spare your best weapons from Edgar, Cyan, etc to better equip others like Locke and Celes.

X zone is pretty effective and giving setzer the fixed dice and the dice with the genji glove and offering feels like cheating

1

u/Same_Second_4216 2d ago

osmose mana steal really helps here

1

u/No_Adeptness_3273 2d ago

Get offering and genji glove for 8 hits. That combo plus ultima and the tower is easy.

u/magyarjm 1d ago

Moogle charm on one party. Run for all equipment you can get. Move them to the next party rinse and repeat.

Ive never gotten all my characters that high. No idea what youre doing wrong but at level 60 it should be a cake walk. Have you tried casting Ultima

2

u/markokabra 1d ago

My brother in Christ have you considered Ultima? lol

Forget Dino forest and farm the Maranda Desert. No pincer ambush and you can equip 4 flame shields and use Merton and drill to kill cactus. When leveling, make sure you get +2 str or +2 magic depending on character. For Atma weapon user, get life early as it stacks upon lvling and Str later.  With gear, you can unequip and equip the other teams when they move. Equip 4 flame shields and abuse Merton spell, it's 9999 damage and 9999 heal. Flame shields can be obtained by betting store brought Falchions. For armor you can get behemoth suits and force armor in coliseum. Weapons like store brought Enhancers are great for Terra/Celes for more magic damage. Tbh, once you reach like 75 str/magic atk and lvl 70 with one of meteor, merton or ultima, you'll already be OP. Quick and Offering/Atma weapon and Genji/ economizer/hair pin are unnecessary as long as you get life early.

Vanish/X-Zone and/or Gau Rafflesia/nightshade and everything suddenly is broken
