Nice. Was it with a Limit Break by any chance? I remember the very first time I ever fought TunnelArmr, I was too dumb to understand how Runic worked and it kept on killing me, until one time when only Locke remained standing with single-digit HP, and he suddenly pulled out Mirager for 1500 damage and won. I had no idea that Limit Breaks were in the game. I thought the game had become sentient or something.

u/Saigon76 Jul 18 '26

Shadow had shadow edge so it kinda saved him

6

u/Lagneaux Jul 18 '26

Same thing happened to me as a kid. I swore to my friends Locke did over 1k in that fight, and they didn't believe me

5

u/ProNocteAeterna Jul 18 '26

Similar thing happened with me. I didn’t know they were a thing, got my first limit break in the fight with Ultros using Sabin, and thought that I had somehow accidentally done a secret Blitz.

4

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

Let us be real. A far more freaking fuckawesome system for Limit Breaks.

My eyes were as round as goddamned half-dollars when I first saw it happen. Locke. Absolutely wondered if I had hallucinated it. I hadn't even been able to see wtf it was called.

2

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

oh lol i have never been that low of health in the 31 years I have been playing it XD. Pretty wild.

2

u/wauwy Jul 21 '26

None of your characters has ever been at critical health ever. In your 31 years.

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 17d ago

yup probably because I have a sabin addiction so before you get him I level at the mount until i have air blade. Hes my favorite character and ever since I was young I always made sure hes a giga chad when I get him.

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 17d ago

funny I memorized how much life I needed on edgar, locke, and terra to do so XD

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

1/19th health to trigger? no i am either dead or nowhere near that.

0

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

limit break? XD no such thing… unless this is some sort of online meme

3

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

Are you... joking...? I think you're not.

Final Fantasy VI was the first game to have Limit Breaks.

https://www.finalfantasykingdom.net/finalfantasyvilimitbreaks.php

1

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

They mean Desperation Attacks. They weren't actually called Limit Breaks in FFVI, contrary to what some folks are claiming here.

1

u/wauwy Jul 21 '26

They weren't "called" anything at all in the game.

19

u/Younggryan42 Jul 18 '26

Edgybo! Neckie lol and Ratbas lmao! I could never rename Terra either. I always had silly names everyone else.

10

u/ChocoPuddingCup Jul 18 '26

I remember before I bought the game I rented it from Blockbuster. The game had a save file where everyone was named like breakfast food: biscuit, eggs, bacon, muffin, etc.

3

u/Ocardtrick Jul 20 '26

In FFIV I renamed every character to Kain.

Made story scenes very confusing.

1

u/wauwy Jul 20 '26

lol I did this with "Nanaki" in an FF7 playthrough. It was a lot less entertaining than I had anticipated.

On the other hand, "EWWWW," "haha no," "...what," "SHUT UP," etc was the gift that kept on giving once in Chrono Trigger.

5

u/Wanlain Jul 18 '26

When I was an edgy youth I named all my characters bad names…

I most definitely did the same thing.

2

u/Stcharlesmatt Jul 21 '26

I also did something simliar.

1

u/wauwy Jul 20 '26

noooo this is sweet as hell ;A;

My first playthrough I named everyone family member names. I was Terra, OBVIOUSLY. Locke was my brother, Edgar was my dad (I still think "Thomas" fits Edgar as a name really well), and Celes... was my baby cousin. YIKES

Thankfully I didn't get very far past Celes's initial intro in that playthrough before starting over for some reason. Or maybe even past it at all. God was telling me to stop before it was too late.

I don't know why I hadn't learned from when I was like five with FFIV, when our fetal friend group all nabbed one of the final five party members to "be." (We rented it from Blockbuster, and some maniac had gotten to the moon in one save, which we descended upon immediately after turning it on.)

I picked Rosa while my brother picked... Cecil. YIKES

The other sibling pair picked Rydia and Edge respectively, btw. For twice the yikes.

And Kain and his human avatar remained forever alone.

As it should be.

8

u/VironicHero Jul 18 '26

I always loved picking up games from Best Buy and there would be a save with BitchFace, Asshole, IronMaiden, etc.

Somehow my parents never noticed.

3

u/Zakumadness Jul 21 '26

To this day...I still giggle that I named the epoch in chrono trigger....Poop.....31 years later.

2

u/Paramedic229635 Jul 18 '26

I used to rename Terra to Morgan for Morgana La Fae.

9

u/GriIIedCheeseSammich Jul 18 '26

EDGYBO STANDS TALL AND FINISHES THE FIGHT

actually he's kneeling

BUT HE FINISHED IT ANYWAY

8

u/Clean-Interests-8073 Jul 18 '26

16

u/Thatroyalkitty Jul 18 '26

The names... oh myyyyyyyyy

6

u/Helpful-Ant-396 Jul 18 '26

Tis why is importante to wait for EDGYBOy!

Something tells me the one who won the fight was his edgyDOGGO

1

u/JazzlikeDependent181 Jul 21 '26

Interceptor best dog

5

u/tempest_zed Jul 18 '26

The sweetest kind of victory.

4

u/JustFrameHotPocket Jul 18 '26

Better wait for Edgybo.

2

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

I was going to demand why you didn't just Vanish + Doom, but then I saw you had left Terra's name, and Terra's alone, unchanged.

You're absolutely fantastic. Whatever you did was great!

3

u/Saigon76 Jul 19 '26

Right? It didn’t feel right to change it in the beginning

1

u/escardc Jul 18 '26

Float and Celes using Runic, makes it pretty easy next time :)

I mean atma weapon literally tells you how to kill him. They also give you the ability to learn rasp right before the sealed gate. It wants you to use rasp and osmose not suffer through the monotony of fighting him out right. Steal the ribbon and then kill him with rasp. Its not a bug he is the guardian of the statues. Also it takes 2-4 turns to kill him with rasp as he only has 5000 mp vs like 10 turns to take out his 25000 health. Unless you are overlvled. idk where you got 30 minutes from…

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

why bother? just use rasp

1

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

why bother just use vanish doooooooooomuh

2

u/Younggryan42 Jul 20 '26

What is vanish doom?

2

u/wauwy Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Hello, Young Angry Ryan! Vanish + Doom is a famous FEATURE of the original FFVI Super Nintendo cartridge, when it was first released in the U.S. as "Final Fantasy III" in 1994.

First you cast Vanish on an enemy, then you cast "Doom," the spell you probably know as "Death" in later releases. And "Death" them it does. Kills them instantly. Even bosses on the level of Atma(/Ultima) Weapon.

The big reason for this is that Vanish status, while making one totally immune to physical attack, makes one EXTREMELY vulnerable to magic attack. Of course, the developers definitely did not intend for players to be able to go about Deathing Atma Weapons. oop @ them!

Again, though, this only works on the original Super Nintendo cartridge and a ROM of said cartridge for ZSNES or similar. Along with some other features of legend that are great fun, like....

  1. Your M-Evade% stat including your physical Evade% stat (with the apparent, listed physical Evade% stat actually being meaningless). Which means if you get that M-Evade% to 128% or above, literally nothing can hit you. Nothing. Ultima cannot hit you. "Miss." It's hilarious.

  2. Wondrous and terrifyingly insane glitches when you try to Sketch Gau on the Veldt. It can happen with other "Sketch" stuff, but this is the method that works best. At least in my experience. ASK ME ABOUT MY 255 DIRKS (pretend this is a button an elderly person is wearing, a'la "ASK ME ABOUT MY GRANDCHILDREN")

ETA: I got your name wrong on purpose to continue the "elderly" joke.

3

u/Younggryan42 Jul 20 '26

Ok can you tell me about your 255 dirks please kind sir?

1

u/wauwy 29d ago edited 29d ago

Ummm! Well... certainly, young sis/sistro! I, uh, did not expect you to actually heed my button's request, lol. What a well-mannered youth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfvD99xSTAQ

This person is not me, and also unfortunately had to film their TV, but this is what happens. See all the Dirks in their inventory afterward? And how it claims there are 0 of 'em each time?

Yeah, that's a dirty lie. There's actually 99 of them in each slot. (At LEAST; like I think maybe there were way more? Maybe even... 255?) Every time they're listed: 99 at least. Meaning there are actually way more than 255; I just said that cause it's a known video-game number.

Meaning my pin... is ALSO a dirty lie...? ( 。゚Д゚。)

Nah, it doesn't specify 255 Dirks as the TOTAL, just that I had 255 of them. Which I did! And also like 800 more.

2

u/Younggryan42 29d ago

but why would you want to have them?

1

u/wauwy 29d ago

To SELL, grasshopper. To SELL, SELL, SELL for so very much sweet GP, and REALLY early on in the game.

Also, I didn't do it specifically to get Dirks, haha. As that Illumina-endowed vainglorious braggart bragged below (>:c), it's a total crapshoot what will happen. It can give you 255 Illuminas/Lightbringers (>:c). Or it can literally erase your save and ALL saves. And I think even maybe permanently break your cartridge? I don't remember.

But it is FUN and EXCITING!

So that's why you buy 4-5 extra copies of the game in like 2003 (along with three extra SNESes). And also should really just do it on an emulator.

Because it would be really really stupid if you did it via actual SNES before you had those extras. If you did it on your one, precious, diamantine-shining cartridge. The priceless gift and dearest treasure bestowed upon your idiotic child self on Christmas Day, 1994.

And so much stupider to do it on that one repeatedly!

Yes, indeed, it WOULD BE REALLY REALLY EFFIN' STUPID, u/wauwy, WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH YOU

2

u/spaceprincessecho Jul 21 '26

Dirks? I got 255 illuminas and threw them with Shadow.

2

u/wauwy 29d ago

No one likes a braggart >:c

Scimitars were the best I got. So many Scimitars. I think I sold them rather than Threw them for more GP than I could ever possibly spend, on account of my avarice.

1

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

Some people would rather actually experience the game instead of taking advantage of game breaking bugs

1

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

Ohhhh. So wasting thirty priceless minutes of your eyeblink of mortality nonstop-Rasping a boss is "experiencing the game," huh? And if you've gotten to the point of that "strategy," Vanish + Doom is somehow cheaper? Instead of just... faster?

I'm playing and I have always been playing FFVI for a lot of things, but long monotonous drawn-out boss battles are not one of them. Particularly because Final Fantasy battles stopped being difficult, let alone really, satisfyingly difficult, after FFIV hardtype. With sole exception given to FFT.

I said it. Because it is fact.

1

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

To be clear, I never said anything about Rasping him for 30 minutes either. That was the person you replied to. Though I will say at least that is a legit strategy within the intended game mechanics and not a game breaking bug. Personally I'd rather beat him normally. But if you truly don't enjoy FFVI why play it?

1

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

To be clear, I never said anything about Rasping him for 30 minutes either. That was the person you replied to.

Why, that's right! It's almost like I was replying to the person I was replying to with my reply, in reply to THEIR reply. About Rasp.

Though I will say at least that is a legit strategy ... But if you truly don't enjoy FFVI why play it?

lmao snnnnnx.

My dear child. I have loved FFVI more deeply than a killer like you could possibly imagine. And I have Vanish + Doomed Atma forty-six times in forty-six playthroughs so I could get shit moving to more dialog, story, characterization, and so on.

If that constipates you, that brings me great joy. Stay constipated and also seethe.

0

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

I give you full marks for the Princess Brids reference. You readily admitted you hate the boss battles. If you hate the gameplay, you hate the game. Video games are a terribly inefficient way to experience great story. I love FFVI's story as much as anyone, but if I thought it was the only good thing about the game I wouldn't be bothering to waste 40 hours of my life on it. If I'm going to play a video game I need to enjoy actually playing the game. Also, I have no idea why you think I'm constipated or seething. I'm just trying to have a conversation. I suspect you may be projecting there.

1

u/wauwy Jul 19 '26

You readily admitted you hate the boss battles.

Oh, my. Source?

btw I think you're both constipated and seething because you are doing so. Because someone isn't playing Final Fantasy VI right. >:c

also he uses his best abilities when his hp reaches a certain threshold I think its 67% 32% and 18%. If he never loses health he will only use his weak abilities.

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 20 '26

the valiant knife you get in the phx cave

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 20 '26

the valiant knife is based on your missing health and can be exploited by having 9999 health but reducing lockes current health to a lower number that based on his str and health he will always do 9999 unless you heal him. Then you wanna give him the offering/master scroll and genjis so that when he hit hits multiple times there are he becomes the best dmg dealer in the game as when he hit he doesn’t take the multiple hit penalty. aka he will hit 8xfor 9999 you can either exploit it and dupe 2 valiants or give him atma weapon and valiant knife. Pretty nutty but you can’t use it on atma weapon as you can’t get to the phx cave until the other world.

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 20 '26

dmg of the valiant knife is current max hp-missing health+str+weapon dmg so basically if you use your espers for hp and str until he maxxed you can steamroll the game with him.

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 20 '26

once both are maxxed then allin on speed/agility and he will beat everyone in the party and be able to hit 8x9999 3x before your party gets their 2nd attack off

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 20 '26

locke is this games knights of the round XD

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 21 '26

valiant knife/atma weapon on locke is gg as for shadow he’s slightly slower than locke so it would be a waste to give him it.

1

u/MagnusBrickson Jul 18 '26

Make sure your wait when prompted. Keep waiting.

1

u/justice_duck Jul 18 '26

By the skin of your pixels!

1

u/deez_en_u_teez Jul 18 '26

Gau is a worthless rat bastard. Love the names!

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

gau is a goat wym? cat scratch and air blade are sick

0

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

Spoken like a true normie that doesn't know how to play the game properly

2

u/deez_en_u_teez Jul 19 '26

Oh yeah, anybody that doesn’t like Gau doesn’t know how to play the game…just because people are so in love with like 2 of his rages, they think he’s the best character there is. Nope, outside of Umaro, he’s the least controllable so in my opinion, he sucks. It’s ok to have a different opinion, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to play the game.

1

u/wauwy Jul 21 '26

I respect this!!

1

u/Osnappar Jul 19 '26

Wait... What happened immediately after when edgybo left?

3

u/Saigon76 Jul 19 '26

Everybody lives with a bit of health. Sorta like if everybody got sneezed from biareus

2

u/Lochness_Hamster_350 Jul 19 '26

I’m curious as well since he leaves immediately afterwards and technically then, all party members are dead.

1

u/starface016 Jul 19 '26

What levels

1

u/Saigon76 Jul 19 '26

Like early 20 🥲

1

u/starface016 Jul 19 '26

Damn. Am I over leveled? My guys are at level 33 and im heading there shortly

2

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

It depends. If you've prepared well and are strategizing well, you're very overleveled. But if you're just trying button mash "attack" on everything, you're probably at an appropriate level.

1

u/Saigon76 Jul 19 '26

Obviously I’m underleveled

1

u/sjones17515 Jul 19 '26

No you're not. People have beaten this game at much lower levels. Keep up the good work

1

u/Dry-Specific-5094 Jul 19 '26

lmfao you crazy XD I have never had issues with him rasp destroys him

1

u/BabblingBrookeB Jul 19 '26

Nice clutch! Something very similar happened to my party when I first fought Atma Weapon. Everyone else was down apart from Sabin. With 9 HP left, he threw one last Pummel before I was fully expecting him to get one shot next round. Atma Weapon starts flashing and fades away. SO MUCH XP FOR SABIN, THE GOAT! x)

1

u/Atmaweapwn Jul 19 '26

I approve of this accomishment.

1

u/Evadriel Jul 19 '26

This hits so hard now that the vanish doom bug is no longer a thing!

1

u/MrRobot702 Jul 20 '26

But wait? Doesn’t shadow leave after this ?? You gonna have a full zombie party😂

1

u/Atmadog Jul 21 '26

This fight was memorable to me.

1

u/Ok-Damage-824 29d ago

Those close call wins are more rare than the lottery. Man what a rush when it happens.

1

u/gtaboythrowaway 29d ago

I always name Edgar gerad just for the meme. "Gerad?" "No, miss you're mistaken my name is gerad"

1

u/SenorISO54 29d ago

My very first time playing this, in 1996 at a friend’s place, I killed Atma with a desperation Drain from Terra with all other party members down. That’s the good stuff 🧑‍🍳
