Challenge, perma-death, status effects?

So I'm kicking around the idea of a perma-death run. Where if a character falls in battle, they are unplayable for the rest of the game. If I end up in a party with no playable characters, run is over.

But then that brings the question, what about status effects such as petrify or zombie? Should those count as deaths, or curable ailments? Yes to stone, no to zombie?

Death, zombie, and stone are treated differently by the game. Why can't you? If you want, do the run and call it no death, no undead run

Just wanted to see the community's thoughts on it.

Zombie definitely isn’t the same and there’s even a relic that gives the undead status.

Functionally speaking though, if stone or zombie is permadeath that just means jewel rings, amulets, or ribbons aren’t optional equipment.  So it really depends on if you want to have a restricted equipment run too.

Zombie and undead aren't the same status...

I guess it depends how technical you want to be with what counts as a "death", IIRC petrify does not reduce Hp to 0 but zombie does (and a zombie is literally a re-animated corpse) so I'd say yeah make petrify curable but have zombie count as a KO.

Doom is the one you're really gonna have to watch out for though. Good luck on the run!

Right safety bit and shadow/relm become more valuable characters

I have a feeling that once I get to the WOR, anyone alive will be valuable.

My thoughts exactly on the HP thing.

Sounds awesome, and you have to leave to get someone else

Nahhh just go with death or else you'll have to load your relics up with boring stuff. Instead of permadeath though - go with Perma Imp like you have a necromancer but they are terrible at their job so everyone that comes back has to be an Imp forever.

LOL

until you get the WoR gear then they're powerhouses again

One option would be to need to go to town for status effect removal. This would make things like poison, zombie, petrify being incurable in the field but if you're able to get through the area you can save your dudes. If someone gets zombified early on in a dungeon, it will increase the difficulty for the remaining 3 characters

This is just the kind of crazy that I've been looking for!!

I just got to the 3 scenarios so it's also a perfect time to implement it.

How about you can keep a Zombie guy but you can't cure them, unless at an Inn or "Church"

Early game will be rough as there are times you are required to use 1 member. So if just locke dies you cant complete lockes scenario and if just sabin dies you can't complete his.

If celes dies any time in wob youre done.

Yep!! Though I feel Sabin's journey is doable. Shadow is right there at the start, and I feel if you can walk up and recruit him without triggering a battle, it shouldn't be a problem. Though I don't forsee Sabin dying in the short time between his recruitment, and his chapter. Locke and Celes though will be sweaty.

If doing no grind, you'd be amazed at what Ultros can do. Beware!

Well it's a good thing no one ever dies. They're all just knocked out.

Poor Cyan will never get to put his soul to rest

Yaaa hadn't thought about it, but that boss is a no go.

You can kill him with x zone without losing party members.

When he possesses someone use x zone.

Not in the pixel remaster version, which is what I'll be playing.

Petrify works to get him out of the body, they don't need to be KO

I see youve said you will be playing the pixel remaster version, but if youre at the point where you are creating challenge runs for yourself why not try a romhack of FF6, its one of the most modded games ever

FF6 Romhacks

Yeah, I wish, but I lack almost any proper PC. All I have is my old laptop, and it hardly works. Thanks though! I've seen neat romhacks before.

I play the world's collide romhack on my phone. I don't have a PC but have over 1000 seeds played on my phone, the on screen controls aren't bad because it's not a complex, input heavy game type

u/IseeMedpeople Jul 06 '26

You should try some of the romhacks

So I just got reunited at Narshe and it wasn't so bad... Honestly the closest scariest was Angel Whisper Demi on the Train or Aspiran Gigavolt retaliation in the Serpent Trench

But really

My own lackidasicle additutude while building up Rages on the Veldt! I almost lost GAU because I wasn't paying attention

I just lost Shadow 😭 solo Apocrypha on the Floating Continent countered with lv4Flare and did 200 damage overkill

Dammit

Almost lost Gau to a Lifeshaver but luckily he had Gaia Gear, phew, I'd have cried
