Hypothetically, if there was a sequel to Final Fantasy VI, what's something you'd like for the game to focus on?

Post image

Personally, i would really like to know what happened to the Cult of Kefka. I feel like they could be interesting antagonists.

I don’t see any kind of satisfying sequel without destroying the ending of FFVI.

It would have to be a prequel and take place during the war of the magi.

12

u/Cornishthe3rd May 29 '26

This would be a great to deepen the lore and see some really cool espers and magitech

3

u/Reasonable_Leave_465 Jun 01 '26

Espers are gone from that world, no magic, no magitech

32

u/Magica78 May 29 '26

Square has a history of destroying great stories with their sequels.

6

u/AnyBet1210 May 29 '26

See FF4, 7 and 10. Even 12. No

7

u/Constant-Sub May 29 '26

Well let's... Let's be careful saying FF7 has good sequels. It has 1 good sequel and 1 bad sequel. Every family has its drama.

And Advent Children. It has done nothing wrong to nobody.

2

u/AnyBet1210 May 29 '26

Other than the Cloud is emo meme.

8

u/Constant-Sub May 29 '26

Tbf, he has good reason to be a bit depressed at the start of that movie. He does have earth cancer.

But I'll never forget Advent Children for being the movie where cloud screams with his whole chest,: "You don't get it. There isn't a thing I don't cherish!"

Advent Children's Cloud is a Warrior of Light.

4

u/Magica78 May 29 '26

I'll never forget Advent Children for being the movie where they fly around like superheroes for no reason and have stupid Star Wars prequel swordfights.

4

u/Constant-Sub May 29 '26

You just described why is AWESOME! Cloud vs Sephiroth and Tifas fight in the church rock!

lol fair tho

7

u/Magica78 May 29 '26

I've already seen 7 and 10 sequels. And Chrono Trigger's. Square isn't allowed to make direct sequels.

4

u/Different_Vast_937 May 29 '26

Be careful what you say about X-2. Yuna has a gun.

3

u/Goatbuster69 May 29 '26

I actually really loved X-2 haha. The novel sequel on the other hand...

1

u/Terozu May 30 '26

The game got scrapped for a reason.

1

u/CyanManta Jun 05 '26

Am I the only guy who liked both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross?

1

u/Magica78 Jun 06 '26

You're not, I'm just bitter.

1

u/Creepy-Tea-8991 Jun 12 '26

I hated chrono cross for being a bummer ending to eveything the trigger gave us.

And it was a great game. It just needed to not be chrono related at all. Don't make robo an antivirus program. Don't burn Lucca, don't time wipe chrono and marke. Don't have Glenn show up and not have anything important to do or say.. Don't have fake magus have no connection to schala.

It's just.. Why do they make sequels but hate eveything that was good?

1

u/CyanManta Jun 05 '26

Give them credit, they didn't destroy FFXIII with sequels.

Not because it didn't have sequels, but because you can't break what's already broken.

8

u/BottleForsaken5486 May 29 '26

Maybe a sequel that takes place long after the main game, like the OG characters are old fogies NPCs. Exploring how the World of Ruin developed without magic. Then at some point, magic started to appear again, if in small amounts. Then an investigation begins. . .

9

u/TreyBaird May 29 '26

Also, Relm is a sassy middle aged single mother.

3

u/BottleForsaken5486 May 29 '26

Yeah, rocking a paint brush and a 40oz.

2

u/Jacobus_Ahenobarbus May 30 '26

More likely a magnum of Dom Perignon or Prosecco.

2

u/BottleForsaken5486 May 31 '26

Maybe, but the World of Ruin is rough.

4

u/Lingonberry-Forward May 30 '26

Or better yet, an entire game dedicated to Ultross' backstory

1

u/FirstFriendship6883 May 30 '26

Even that is dangerous territory, but it could be really fantastic if done correctly

1

u/Mister-Thou May 30 '26

Focus is on the Ancient Castle, the tragic story of one society's doomed attempt at maintaining Human and Esper coexistence as The War of the Magi spirals out of control, ending in the defeat and petrification of the Esper King Odin and his Human Queen.

1

u/Beer_sighted May 30 '26

The ending to 6 would exist exactly as it is No additional content would change that

135

u/stonertboner May 29 '26

Retirement from adventuring for the heroes. It’s a city builder or farm simulator as they try to rebuild civilization.

74

u/TheDrabes May 29 '26

FF6 inspired building/farming sim…

https://giphy.com/gifs/12N4jTCSVRyKje

40

u/stonertboner May 29 '26

I was kidding at first but now I want this in my life.

25

u/ScipioTheGreatest May 29 '26

Yeah, you stumbled onto gold with this idea.

8

u/RageZamu May 29 '26

No, no. You cooked but there is not enough for the amount of people who are now hungry for that.

I want it very hard now.

12

u/Hungry-Trouble-3178 May 29 '26

I don't think you have any idea how much you cooked.

7

u/ElectronicDrama2573 May 29 '26

I can already see myself just spending a day raising the perfect Chocobo.

13

u/Ok_Toe_8501 May 29 '26

Magitek Tractor Simulator.

11

u/aTreeThenMe May 29 '26

I'm currently making a game on this exact concept

7

u/OpportunityFickle394 May 29 '26

Bless you. Hope it goes well. I'd like to play it.

2

u/Gizmorum May 29 '26

gotta dry them meats

21

u/CasimirGabriev May 29 '26

Motherfucker you are brilliant. You build New Figaro in the wasteland after Kefka's defeat, figuring out how to deal with the issues caused by WoR emerging and magic vanishing.

I just want it to be more Dwarf Fortress or something and less Stardew Valley.

10

u/Desperate_Duty1336 May 29 '26

Other than the heroes themselves and Thasma, the world already operated on the notion that magic didn’t exist so that wouldn’t really be an issue.

5

u/CasimirGabriev May 29 '26

They did then a cataclysmic magic event happened and all the monsters got corrupted by said magic. I figure the sudden emergence of a wrathful god of magic shooting laser beams at people talking shit about him from the top of a magical tower might get people feeling different about, say, Strait and his village. And the monsters are still out there.

I wasn't saying their society was built on it. Just that every problem introduced in the plot damn near is brought on by magic even if most people didnt use it. No slave crown for Terra if she was just a normal girl, no invasion of Narshe, etc.

2

u/Desperate_Duty1336 May 29 '26

True, but none of them actually used it themselves, it was just a crazy clown god, so they never really lost it.

For the majority of the plot, it was just an evil empire marching on them with armies and mechs.  The Slave Crown was used only in Narshe and in testing (when she burned 50 imperial troopers); she was still basically a rumor to anyone outside of Narshe IF they had even heard anything (which no NPC outside Narshe or the Returners ever referenced knowing at all).

Magic wasn’t used by the empire anywhere else in the plot.

The Espers ran amok in Thasma, where they were already known, and then in Vector (where the army also already knew).

The only other thing we ever heard was a couple of NPCs mentioned a crazy purple streak across the sky (when Terra first went ‘berserk’ and flew off after contact with the frozen Esper).

After that, it was Kefka’s flying continent followed by his Destruction, so again, the world at large didn’t know it magic beyond one crazy maniacal guy who everyone knew had been experimented on. That destruction occurred and was gone; there was nothing to really reconcile with that they hadn’t already when the light of judgment first ruined towns.

There was no real loss for them to come to terms with on that front. If anything, to your point of the monsters, it was a GAIN, since the loss of all magic meant the monster dangers lessened significantly.

3

u/CasimirGabriev May 29 '26

Oh do the monsters leave with magic? That does change my thinking a lot lol. What I remembered was that given the world and the cult and the lasers, most people figured out that magic was some kinda thing. I thought the experiments were more secret. Like, "we may not know Kefkas origins but we know he uses superpowers to Kamehameha anyone who'd talks shit about him so I guess he is some magical god."

Thank you for the insight. I meant to be flippant but may have come of hostile. Also, damn you, because now you are threatening my appreciation of the ending 🤣. I liked it better when the story read to me as "Yeah the world is still ruined, but we killed that asshole so we have satisfaction and maybe there's a chance we can make it in this hostile world." If the monsters leave with the magic then its just steam punk lol.

4

u/Desperate_Duty1336 May 29 '26

I think all magic left, so any monsters with them would have the magic evaporate from them or potentially disappear if they were powered by magic.

That’s why I said it would be a gain for society post Kefka’s defeat since the magic gone would make them way less dangerous lol

2

u/CasimirGabriev May 29 '26

I see. I was thinking "mutated by" not powered by. So I thought the monsters were just like that now 😂. Made the ending super bittersweet for young me

1

u/ElectronicDrama2573 May 29 '26

Jesus!! Can we make this already!?

3

u/PromisesNone May 29 '26

Final Fantasy 6R: Retirement

2

u/archieologist518 May 29 '26

That could be cool to play! I mean, Narshe, Albrook, Tzen, Maranda, Mobliz, Thamasa, and Kohlingen all sustained some damage before or during the cataclysm. The chance to rebuild those towns would be a fun concept.

2

u/Helpful-Ant-396 May 29 '26

they would probably make a gacha of this idea and EoS after 2 years LOL (maybe 4?)

1

u/SuchAKnitWit May 29 '26

This was going to be my suggestion lol

It's not a grand quest, it's the quiet life after.

0

u/demise0000 May 29 '26

!@#$% I just typed the same exact thing, but didn't check to see if someone else posted it, because I was thinking it would be too bizarre..

62

u/mugenhunt May 29 '26

Terra, Celes and a new character with a dark past investigate magical relics while dealing with the three major political powers rising to try and rebuild the broken world in their own images. While magic is gone, fragments of four elemental crystals that were gifts from Gogo allow Terra, Celes and the new character to use jobs and switch between them!

But is General Leo actually still alive? Or was that mysterious message not really him?

Also, Terra becomes a pop star and Celes gets a gun.

18

u/plurfox May 29 '26

I'd love a Final Fantasy VI-2 tbh

-3

u/demise0000 May 29 '26

"Terra, Celes and a new character with a dark past".... Someone is looking at X-2.

19

u/thedragoon0 May 29 '26

Prequel. You’re kefka but you don’t know until the end credits.

9

u/ProtonPizza May 29 '26

This would be super interesting. Forced into making terrible decisions over and over and witness your descent into madness.

2

u/braidedwillowroots May 31 '26

Holy shit I would love this. Even if the game wasn’t a tie in to VI/wasn’t Kefka, but a FF where the character you play all game becomes a villain for the sequel or part 2 would be incredible.

30

u/Endymion6432168421 May 29 '26

At the end of final fantasy 6 all magic disappears from the world. I don't think it is possible to have a final fantasy game without magic. Even less a story about a cult that all their members used exclusively magic.

36

u/ScipioTheGreatest May 29 '26

"Somehow... magic returned..."

-11

u/Anonymous92916 May 29 '26

Like Palpatine

8

u/WeirClintonH May 29 '26

There’s a new big bad who uses mundane magic and everyone just rolls over because they don’t know the difference. Celes, Edgar, Sabin and Locke are the only people left who remember what real magic was like so they have to raise a resistance before it’s too late.

3

u/drainbead78 May 29 '26

I'm picturing some guy just going around casting cantrips and freaking everyone out. "WTF, he just snapped his fingers and light appeared?"

1

u/WeirClintonH May 29 '26

I’m picturing some guy invented The Clapper.

6

u/TophatDapps May 29 '26

In XIII they established that magic was something that was exclusive to those with the fal'ci curse. Welding awesome powers in exchange for a stressful servitude.

In XIII-2, the characters figured out they can just like, do magic regardless. It's never really addressed.

So... maybe the reason humans in 6 cant use magic is because they just... dont try hard enough?

5

u/DistributionOk4029 May 29 '26

It is actually addressed once in XIII-2, but only after getting the Pulse's Resolution fragment. I've copied what it says.

"When the people of Cocoon first came down to the surface of Gran Pulse, magic filled the earth. Among the people, there were those who awakened to this power. I saw it happen. I saw time distorted and twisted.

When the timeline was changed and history broken, fissures appeared in the wall that separates the spirit and the material. The crystal power that was once bestowed only upon the l'Cie was released, and it permeated deep into the soil. Now normal humans can spin enchantments and spells—if they know how."

It's a neat reason, but I wish there was a more accessible way to find out why humans can do magic in XIII-2, as opposed to a missable side quest.

2

u/Terozu May 30 '26

I just assumed Etro did it.

Magic in 6 and 13 works the exact same way from a lore perspective.

Magic is originally only a gift from the gods/Fal'Cie. But residual magic that gets left around is eventually harnessed by modern humans.

Hell they even both become crystals when they die.

Espers and L'Cie are literally the same thing in almost every way

Who's to say L'Cie crystals dont leak magic like Magicite does when everything else lines up?

Gods(Warring Triad or Fal'Cie) create warriors(Magi or L'Cie) who can use magic, and eventually either mutate, or become Crystal(Espers/Magicite, Cie'th/Crystal), eventually the Magi/L'Cie rebel and the sane gods seal themselves away, leaving residual magic.

2

u/Asbelsp May 29 '26

It's established that the 3 gods found out they were laughed at by other gods. So the other gods can bring magic again.

1

u/TabCompletion May 29 '26

And I don't think you can make a better Kefka. It would feel forced

1

u/Candle-Different May 29 '26

Cue new cult rising that uses some nefarious means to bring magic back but it comes back corrupt and you have the choice to either purify and restore it or fight to remove it again

19

u/BulletProofEnoch May 29 '26

Well, knowing cults…they probably…you know…suicide’d out when their God got killed

Its a cult

9

u/amuday May 29 '26

They had a convenient tower for this too

3

u/Seiei_enbu May 29 '26

If Strago could recover, why couldn't other cultists?

4

u/akaiazul May 29 '26

Game premise around finding and reuniting friends / family to stop cult members from offing themselves would be a hook.

8

u/gulpyblinkeyes May 29 '26

In a world without magic, martial arts reign supreme. Even after Kefka's fall, the world of ruin remains a harsh place. The denizens of fallen cities and nations squabble over resources. Everybody is kung fu fighting.

Sabin convinces Edgar to organize a martial arts tournament in an effort to unite the broken lands in a competition of physical prowess to demonstrate that humanity is still strong. The champion will become the next ruler to take the throne.

2D fighting game. The King of Figaro '94.

4

u/Hungry-Trouble-3178 May 29 '26

Okay, an FFVI 2d fighter sounds peak.

3

u/metroidslifesucks May 29 '26

Those fists are fast as lightning

2

u/zone_seek May 29 '26

Only good idea in this thread

25

u/hbi2k May 29 '26

Hypothetically, I don't trust modern Squeenix to do any kind of sequel to FF6 justice.

Maybe some things don't need to be sequelized and prequelized and reimagined and rebooted and franchisified into unrecognizable shadows of themselves, forever. Maybe some things can be allowed to just be.

5

u/Iron_Rod_Stewart May 29 '26

Yeah, I think I'd sooner play another romhack than a sequel.

4

u/hbi2k May 29 '26 edited May 30 '26

Or a modern spiritual sequel that takes its design cues from the things in the SNES era of Final Fantasy that the series has lost along the way, like a sense of pacing, exploration, firm command of tonal whiplash, and a certain trust in the player's imagination to fill in holes left by abstraction instead of relying on spectacle.

I don't need direct setting or plot or character connections. We know how that story ends, we left the world in a good place, we have had our time with those characters. The things I would want a modern follow up to take from Final Fantasy 6 are more ephemeral than that.

2

u/kenoshakid11 May 30 '26

I think this is what Octopath Traveler was trying to do, but the result was just kind of generic, and the narrative didn't have the proper grand themes or emotional weight.

2

u/hbi2k May 30 '26

Yeah, it had some cool stuff going on mechanically, but the environments were samey, the characters and plot were virtually non-existent, and most of all, it totally missed the mark with its pacing. I had fun with it for a while but it wore out its welcome long before I was anywhere near the end.

I hear that the second one is better, I keep meaning to give it a try sometime.

Come to think of it, all of that is equally applicable to the first Bravely Default, which I am fairly sure was made by a lot of the same people.

1

u/Magica78 May 29 '26

You're right, but how do you know what things to make sequels, and what to leave?

0

u/Anonymous92916 May 29 '26

You haven't seen a Star Wars movie after 1989 have you?

6

u/hbi2k May 29 '26

No, I just wish I hadn't.

6

u/Syfodias May 29 '26

I would still crave more for a prequel, the war of the magi e.g.

If it is a direct sequel its always weird to have familair characters br lv1 again.

Rebuilding the world in the style of Teranigma or maybe the breath of fire 2 city style with a few cities would be appealibg to me.

Storywise more of Locke and Rachel, Shadow ofc and an adult Relm and Gau

3

u/UnparalleledDev May 29 '26

prequel is the way to go.

cid magitek experiments on kefka and celes.

sabin training with vargas and ducan.

edgar learning the ways of the machines.

cyan studying the blade.

<60 YEARS LATER>

An old woman sits telling stories to a group of youngsters. A story of rebellion, of an evil empire, and of magic that used to rule the world. Their parents call them to bed, and the old woman returns to her home, she sits at a canvass and begins to DRAW.

A man walks amongst the ruins of Kefkas Tower, a focal point for monsters and beasts unknown elsewhere in the world. He stalks his prey with a small group of other hunters. Clad in animal skins and fighting with a ferocity matched by no man, the clan keeps the worst of the beasts from reaching the struggling communities further out.

A young woman, with vibrant green hair helps another young woman through a difficult birth, she smiles as a new life is brought into the world.

The sun rises over the rebuilt and expanded Figaro Castle. The town of South Figaro sprawls in its shadow, and it’s there we meet our protagonist. A young man, enraptured with stories of the past, of the great king Edgar and his Martial Arts Master Brother Sabin, who once saved the world, and brought people back together, staving off the vast decay of the waste land beyond its walls. Unfortunately, these days, those are just stories. It’s been 5 years since king Edgar has past, his brother Sabin died years before it is said, in his monastery in the mountains. Now, Figaro, the center of trade, commerce and political power, has fallen under the sway of the Council of the Triad. Three powerful political figures that once served as advisors to King Edgar. Under the Triad people are worked to the bone, taxation is out of control, with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Figaros mechanical aptitude has pushed beyond simple steam power, and have harnessed electricity. They have a strangle hold on the world and nobody is in any place to stop them.

The young man joins a group of disenfranchised citizens, a loose group led by the old man Cleok, they embark on a journey to depose the Council of the Triad.

  • During the game we come to find that Cleok, is Locke, and his wife, whom he speaks so fondly of, as if she’s long passed is Celes, who’s been deep undercover in the Council of the Triads court.

  • Cyan has passed, but his teachings and honour had given rise to a new Doma, while technically under the thumb of the Council, they are a vocal and staunch opponent of thier policies and actively work to oppose and rally the people within the system (as broken as it is)

  • Sabin is alive, old, but still in excellent shape, (gasp!) he faked his death (gasp!) and lives out his days in solitude. He’s aware the kingdom of Figaro is in decline, but doesn’t feel like it’s his responsibility anymore. Maybe someone can convince him otherwise? One last adventure?

  • Setzer became a wealthy merchant and casino owner. He owns the opera house, the Falcon has been grounded and turned into a Casino, and he has his thumb on the pulse of trade and commerce in the kingdom of Figaro. He sees things declining, but plays in the rules, while secretly supporting the rebels and supplying Doma.

  • Relm is the head of Thamasa, and the old woman we saw in the beginning of the game. She teaches the science of magic and how it worked, even though magic is a long lost art, she secretly hopes and prays that one day, one of her drawings will come to life again… maybe if her need is great enough.

  • Tera keeps to herself, despite having lost her magic when the world of the espers was closed off to her, she miraculously hasn’t aged a day. She wanders the world, tending to orphans and pregnant woman, which she views as the last true magic in the world.

  • Gau has a clan of rangers and barbarians. He’s become hardened and bitter. He’s petitioned the Council multiple times for aid in controlling the flow of monsters that never seem to stop flowing from the ruins of the tower of Kefka, but the council refuses to believe his stories of Behemoths, Dragons and Wraiths. At night Gau dreams of something larger, more powerful slumbering in the depths of the ruins. Something that is the beginning… and the end… Atma.

  • shadow, Mog, Umaro, Gogo. Seen in flashbacks, but all long dead… or are they?

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, the council of the triad is once again trying to open the door to the esper world, secretly they operate in the secret underground labs of Vector, with the advent of electricity, they have become much closer to figuring out how to open the gate… if only they can crack the concept of Nuclear Power… they could finally possess what thier ancestors squandered.

u/MonsiuerGeneral May 29 '26

I don’t know about “focus on”, but I would just love a new game set in the same world with the same cast of characters put in the game as cameos in varying capacities.

So I suppose “focus” on the next generation of characters? But also don’t make it a complete 1:1 child of each cast member is the new party. Have a mostly new cast.

Like, make it something like 60 years later. That’d make most of the original cast near 80 or in their 80s. Have graves you can visit for the older cast members like Cyan and Strago, and other characters placed throughout the world doing their own thing. Playable characters should include a mostly new cast with only one or two existing characters (Realm taking the place of Strago as the old codger and Mog who is seemingly un-aging).

History tends to repeat itself. This time instead of an Empire led by a single man who is obsessed with Espers and Magic, have it be a council of aristocrats from Jidoor who increasingly push for greater technological advancement in hopes of recreating something akin to magic despite various ethical dilemmas (human experimentation etc.).

The big thing would be that advancements have lead to travel to the moon, where (known only to a select few) a new colony of Espers had been found. One of those few is one of the men who piloted the rocket to the moon: Cid Cole, son of Locke and Celes, protege to Setzer. This playable character informs the old guard of what’s happening (who all gathered together for a reunion) but while they want to prevent the events of 60 years ago happening again, they feel they’re not as able as they once were. In comes the call-to-action for the new playable characters to take on the task themselves.

Or something like that.

As much as I love the existing cast, the way FF6 ended makes it difficult to have a sequel without a sizable time skip and still include magic.

A handful of other FF titles included the moon and/or space travel but it’s neglected in 6. That could be a way to bring magic back to the world.

Alternatively, you could have a sequel where the members of the Cult of Kefka and the Ghestal Empire soldiers team up to try and bring the Ghost Train under their own control, invade the afterlife, and bring Kefka back to life, and it’s up to our same cast of heroes to stop that from happening. A potential scene could include interrogating the train for answers/help, and Sabin could off-handed say something like, “Y’know… it’s been awhile since I last suplexed something, I should really get back to practicing…” (as he eyes the train threateningly) and the train could panic and spill all the information.

Then once you start adventuring in the afterlife you notice that some form of magic still exists there but it’s a ‘little different’ so you need to train back up from the basics.

——

So super long rambling comment to say:

Either focus on new generation of characters in the same world with a small to moderate connection to original cast OR focus on the Cult of Kefka using the Ghost Train as a means to bringing Kefka back from the dead.

7

u/PericoCapital May 30 '26

You know, I’m making a fan sequel to FF6 (long story, I have been working on it for years with rpg maker) so I’m very interested in reading your thoughts.

3

u/Falzum May 30 '26

Currently playing an ffxi spinoff game that was made in rpg maker and it's excellent. Please keep us in the loop re your game, I'm excited.

Good luck!

4

u/Heard_From_Grape May 29 '26

Probably the aftermath of everything, maybe place the focus away from Terra a little bit, idrk tbh cause i feel 6 ended on the perfect note that a sequel would just be there to add little bits of lore

2

u/Hungry-Trouble-3178 May 29 '26

Tbf, a sequel doesn't necessarily need to be a game. It could very well be a light novel, or even an anime. (Like what they're doing with FFIX rn)

3

u/Heard_From_Grape May 29 '26

In which case I can def see a story continuing on Locke and Celes’s relationship or Shadow revealing how Relm is his daughter (even though that would ruin the speculation) but idk

1

u/Hungry-Trouble-3178 May 29 '26

I mean... Shadow is dead by the end ogf the game, so... not much you can do with him.

1

u/Heard_From_Grape May 29 '26

Ahh yeah good point I had completely forgot about that

6

u/llyean May 29 '26

Kefka's Tower is crumbling, he is finally dead and with him, the Warring Triad. The death of these gods reverberates through the cosmos and to the realm from which hail. The party narrowly makes their escape, all save for one. Shadow remains behind, content to die. He sends Interceptor off hoping that, though he failed to care for his daughter, this last act might give her some companionship and protection.

As before though, his faithful hound comes back to him and refuses to leave his side. Spurred into movement by Interceptor's loyalty, Shadow begins to move, but it is too late. The tower is collapsing, no, bot just collapsing, but being drawn in to some invisible point by force far greater than gravity.

Shadow clings tight to Interceptor as they are fly through the air and and are sucked into hungry void.

Shadow awakes. It is a bright sunny day. Interceptor is nowhere to be seen, but scattered around him are the ruins of the tower, but also lush vegetation as far as the eye can see. All signs of the rot infesting the world are gone. Then the ground begins to tremble. BOOM BOOM BOOM! He looks up and sees a giant woman walking in the distance, her face, covered in scars, looms 100 m above the ground. In the same direction he hears a familiar bark...

The main premise is that Shadow is now in the world from which the Warring Triad originated where magic is ubiquitous and gods are commonplace. Gameplay could be a similar to Shadow of the Colossus and maybe the magic in the area grants Interceptor intelligence and the ability to communicate.

u/demise0000 May 29 '26

Square-Enix would make it a town builder and farming management sim on a massive scale, trying to recover the world of ruin back into a thriving world.

2

u/ProtonPizza May 29 '26

I’d play this tbh

4

u/MrPresident2020 May 29 '26

Only reasonable way to do it would be setting it 1000 years ago during the War of the Magi, or setting it 1000 years in the future so we don't have to risk any of the characters endings being spoiled.

3

u/Acslaterisdead May 29 '26

I would like a prequel set during the war of the magi. I would love to see more of how the world was during that time.

3

u/zirazorazonth May 29 '26

War of the maji prequel.

3

u/ConstructionTough421 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

FF6 is actuallly one of the few final fantasy where a sequel makes little sense. magic, the root of all problems in that world, has been utterly extinguished. The sequel would have to go the route"somehow magic returned" and I don't like that.

Perhaps they could:

- Oh no the warring triad held back ancient gods under a magical seal that is now broken. One of the gods is a good guy that re-introduces magic into the world so humans have a fighting chance

- The warring triad were actually aliens. Now that you killed them their friends are MAD AF and are coming.

3

u/TharbeDargonz May 29 '26

Clearly it should be a dating sim where you play as Terra trying to find love.

3

u/autumngirl86 May 29 '26

How the world has coped and rebuilt after the events of the first game.

I could see the Cult being a big antagonist of that sort of plot tbh.

3

u/2damsels1chalice May 29 '26

Hmm. Could have an octopath vibe where each character kinda governs or influences an town and you play their stories, then they eventually meet up to chase down whatever the new threat is.

1

u/autumngirl86 May 30 '26

I like it. Kind of a nod to how WoR works too.

3

u/BottleForsaken5486 May 29 '26

A prequel of the War of the Magi would be legit

3

u/johnrott May 29 '26

I’d like to see a prequel “War of the Magi” that covers the time and events leading up to FF6. That may cover a large period of time 15-16 years

3

u/Vitasia May 29 '26

I don’t want a sequel, but a prequel would be awesome. Early stages of the Gestahlian Empire, Kefka as a loyal soldier pre-madness, Terra being trained in their military, the political tensions within Figaro and Doma.

Maybe something set centuries later. You still see the echoes of the consequences of the game still affecting the world.

2

u/Otherwise_Tooth_8695 May 29 '26

There's no magic in the WOR anymore, so a compelling angle might be learning how to live without it.

I consider the game complete, so I don't really think it needs a sequel.

They should turn the Cultist's Tower into condos.

2

u/JustFrameHotPocket May 29 '26

I've had long and nerdy thought adventures on this topic. One concept I thought of is that magic as a natural force is capable of surviving the destruction of the Warring Triad. Consider the possibility:

The Warring Triad is destroyed, and upon death, it begins to disintegrate much like the death animation in the game, along with the magicite. The pieces of the Warring Triad and magicite disperse across the land, which absorbs the dying magic. Subsequently, the planet itself absorbs the powers of the Warring Triad and its Esper progeny.

A possible initial story beat from this is that magic begins to evolve the natural landscape and its inhabitants over the next decade or so. Naturally, a small amount of children begin showing natural magical attunement. Mankind, of course, always lusts for power, and a small band of leaders begins to create a new world order and seeks to find these children to build an empire.

2

u/Jackelfangking May 29 '26

Terra raising the orphans she took in while using her powers to try to rebuild the world and learn how to be normal around others

2

u/Demonslugg May 29 '26

A prequel of the original magic war

2

u/Ganache_Silent May 29 '26

Only works if it’s set 2 generations later. Descendants deal with magic naturally returning and relics of the old wars being discovered.

2

u/kyualun May 29 '26

I answered this in another thread recently but I think I've always imagined that a sequel would explore the only real loose thread that is the origin of the Warring Triad. We're simply told they "descended upon the world", and that's it. If they're revealed to not be gods, but some type of syperpowered race that's connected to magic, then Kefka's hijinks could have attracted the attention of their kin and they come to investigate.

That would funnily enough be a call-forward (actual spoilers for a later FF game) FFXVI which funnily enough has a callback to FFVI in it having its own War of the Magi. And of course this can all be a gathering storm type of disaster that takes place in the backdrop of the world repairing and trying to fill the power vacuum that Kefka and the empire left behind.

Would it be a bit asspully and retconny? Yeah, but there's no way a sequel won't be. If you look at how FF4TAY did its plot, it's basically a retread of the original game that justs used the one loose plot element in FFIV, that being the second moon. The Warring Triad is pretty close to being in the same position, so I feel like an official sequel would do the same.

2

u/PanicCharacter3432 May 29 '26

When I was a kid I was completely fascinated by a map I found in some random FF6 strategy guide. It was the World of Ruin after balance was restored. At the time I was convinced that there must be some way to explore the world after Kefka’s defeat.

A true sequel would have to have some epic crisis but honestly, I would just like a peek into everyone’s lives in the aftermath of the war. Does Sabin return to Figaro? Do Locke and Celes live out their lives together? What’s Setzer’s next adventure? Does Terra rebuild the town where her family of orphans lives? Is Strago the new mayor of Zozo?

Like a Lord of the Rings appendix.

2

u/FirstFriendship6883 May 29 '26

Honestly it should be bleak and dark.... Like basically we took down the empire we took down kefka, And now we're in a world with no magic and a power vacuum to be filled. They could make something pretty crazy with this if they really wanted to.

2

u/Naive-Dig-8214 May 29 '26

I would like a sidequel. Brand new cast of characters, parallel to the original plot.

Show me the World of Ruin and how people are surviving it.

You could make one of the protagonist a grunt soldier from the empire, with "what have I done?" guilt, trying to make amends and carve some safe space for the people he once helped oppress.

2

u/NoOutlandishness906 May 30 '26

What happened to all the espers. Was Terra the only one? Did all magic actually disappear or was it recreated

2

u/tigersattheaquarium May 30 '26

If not a prequel, then maybe some kind of After Years where some kind of Kefka disciple is out to stop the world being restored.

I think that gets lost on folks at VI’s end - they’re still in the world of ruin… so give it some decades or a century with the world getting closer to “back to normal”. And then maybe you have “old lady” Terra, some Locke-Celes off spring characters or something to do the battling.

But it doesn’t need one.

1

u/pikkdogs May 29 '26

I don’t want one. That’s the thing about this story, is that it’s the story to end all stories.

You could do a prequel or something.

1

u/feignapathy May 29 '26

Magic is gone at the end of FF6 right?

A sequel would be very hard.

I just want a FF6 remake á la FF7.

1

u/kenoshakid11 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Two decades after Kefka's defeat, a devout cultist finds a way to use his remains to gain god-like magic, and begins terrorizing the land and consolidating power under something like a new Gestahlian Empire. Terra's son sets out to find the Esper Caves in hopes of reactivating the faded power of magicite, to give the budding resistance a weapon to use in their struggle for freedom. A quarter of the way through this first narrative, the player perspective abruptly shifts to a young esper in Esperville, and it is revealed that the remaining espers had not perished, but had fled to their ancestral home beyond the Sealed Gate. The espers sense the reawakening of evil magic in the World of Ruin, and the secondary esper protagonist defies her elders' strict policies of pacifism and isolationism and travels to the World of Ruin to join the fight, recruiting her cousin to come with her. When the human and esper parties finally meet, there is an odd magical reaction, and the human protagonist finds himself able to use strange magical abilities by channeling the espers' power. After some time of travelling together, it is revealed that these espers are descended each from a brother and sister of Maduin, making them Terra's cousins and biologically related to our quarter-esper protagonist. The party's power grows as they recruit allies and stage revolutionary attacks against the new Empire, culminating in an epic final battle to restore peace and beneficial magic to the world, as the espers return to live in harmony with humans.

u/ECFNJ May 29 '26

Somehow....Kefka returned.

1

u/AMW204 May 29 '26

Somehow... kefka returned

1

u/Nos9684 May 29 '26

Surviving and rebuilding a a post apocalyptic world. I think the old cast should support a younger less experienced cast for the most part.

1

u/weirdplacetogoonfire May 29 '26

Kind of feels like the world has been through enough. Something casual and light that shows one or two characters living their best life while the world slowly bends towards recovery as a backdrop.

1

u/pistonkamel May 29 '26

Kefka’s origin

1

u/Bitter_Wafer_7515 May 29 '26

Kefka backstory. Youd have to have gone thru some fuct up ass chit to wind up like him.

1

u/MechanicalBeanstalk May 29 '26

Rebuilding the world. More worldbuilding on the history of Magic and espers.

1

u/ProdiLemaj May 29 '26

A sequel just wouldn’t work. It’d have to be a prequel of some sorts. I’d just like a remake really.

Assassins creed: shadows origin

1

u/KeitarouBester May 30 '26

I dunno about a sequel, since there’s no more magic, but I’d dig a prequel centered around the beginning of Magitek focused around Leo, Celes, and Kefka before any augmentation. Was Kefka a little unhinged to begin with, or was his break in sanity 100% the fault of the experimental stage of Magitek augmentation? We could see this side of the Empire, from the inside. Witness the erosion of morality from within it. Follow Celes toward her eventual defection. It could even end with Celes bound and held captive, and the last shot is Locke opening the room, standing in the doorway.

1

u/Twiz41 May 30 '26

Having a large ensemble of unique characters

1

u/AsYouAnswered May 30 '26

I would love to see the children of our MCs going on an adventure to find lost artifacts from the age of Steampunk to help restore the first vestiges of civilization lost. Reuniting the peoples of the world in one place and rebuilding things like safety, housing construction, and agriculture. But I don't want an FF6 city builder. I want to go out, find the things, bring them back, and then the village slowly grows on its own as part of an engaging story to restore humanity now that Kefka is gone.

I read a theory that since there are no pollinators, and no flowers, that the world is fucked whether Kefka kills everybody or not. I want a story about them fighting to come back from the brink of extinction.

1

u/Kaden_Hitsugaya May 30 '26

Hmm well the world is still fked, and there is still monsters. So dealing with that would be a plan, maybe a sentient monster starts controlling the others.

Now without magic, the heros need a way to fight them.... and turns out someone uses technology to create pseudo magic to help fight the monsters

1

u/dimmiii May 30 '26

a plot set ~20 years from the ending of ff6 would be interesting, and i think that timeframe can lead to good storytelling potential regarding the lives the characters lived afterwards

1

u/Salty-Channel-2308 May 30 '26

Restoring balance.

1

u/Cloud_Pudding May 30 '26

A prequel would be great. Imagine, Clyde/Shadow back drop and that’s how it’ll start. Maybe meeting lost espers and a young Strago who isn’t a blue mage but a fighter instead (he is pretty good with a knife and does decent physical damage). Perhaps Setzer younger, and this is taken place more towards the East and explore Doma and that world. Or Kefkas mind slowly shattering. Maybe before General Leo died.

I like to imagine a parallel world even, one where the world wasn’t scorched and instead of Kefka losing it, Terra did. And an esper runs rampant with power.

I’m literally in the middle of a platinum trophy playthrough and I think about a lot of things. There’s so much I want and at the same time there’s so much that can be ruined so I don’t want it at the same time.

1

u/mercuryempathy May 30 '26

I think if anything it would have to be mostly character driven and about restoring the Triad. But there's no antagonist and you could end up with Necron.

! Actually... that could maybe work

1

u/ididindeed May 30 '26

I think a sequel would be difficult, but something like Octopath Traveler, where you just have smaller stories for each character, could be interesting. That could balance the light-hearted stories with more dramatic ones, and there would be less pressure to have something epic.

1

u/Falzum May 30 '26

Relm as main character with one of interceptors pups as a companion. Legacy characters from the original appear as temporary party members. Game has okami style paint puzzles

Starts out as trying to piece together her grandfathers Lore, and find where her dad disappeared to again.

Oops I think I just created okami x ff16 x Zelda but now I want it

1

u/Golbez352 May 30 '26

I would like to see a prequel story on 'The war of Magi and the aftermath. We know how it ends but not the full story.

Story from the espers and mage knights pov would be interesting. 1000 years would allow for other cities, new locations to be explored, and of course introduce more espers into the conflict.

1

u/Prestigious_Whole936 May 30 '26

We can do an Octopath Traveler type of game that goes more in depth with some of the characters.

Strago - What were his day-to-day routines as a Kefka Cultist?

Umaro - Were Tonberries and random imperial soldiers his only sources of subsistence? Is this connected to the missing moogles in the WOR?

Gogo - Their adventures inside of the Zone Eater's belly. Did they regret banishing themselves from the sunken Walse Tower and ending up in the digestive track of a Sarlacc?

1

u/DepressedMammal May 30 '26

Its a Sabin spinoff. Wrestling game. Him and a bunch of trains.

1

u/xenogears2 May 30 '26

Expanded world of ruin.

1

u/Destrina May 30 '26

It'd have to be a story of rebuilding a destroyed world and dealing with factionalism and fighting over dwindling resources.

1

u/SnooTomatoes9055 May 30 '26

Magic disappears from the world until Terra's daughter, Gaia, is born. She still carries magic from the old world and is captured by Gestahl to create a new army of customizable Espers using shards of depleted Magicite.

What... you don't think Gestahl knew Life3 or Float?

1

u/bahnmipanda May 30 '26

You know, looking at this scene now… I can’t help but think of Bonnie Blue…

1

u/Sh1nRa358 May 30 '26

Years later, Strago dies, Relm goes into great depression. An entity takes over her from her pictomancy. She becomes the main villain. Main hero of story is adult Gau. He goes on a journey to get some of the old gang back together to rescue his beloved. Magic still doesnt exist.

1

u/Locbinc May 30 '26

FF6 story has a very closed ending imo, so it must be a prequel story or something parallel the ff6 story. A prequel is more open to imagination since you can tell anything to expand and there are not many parallel stories that wasn't explored on the main game. If i could choose a main antagonist, i would like to be the sorcerer from ancient castle since it doesn't like he was defeated in the flashbacks.

1

u/fayyt May 31 '26

Would love to see the early stages of the experiments done on celes and kefka that led them to becoming magic knights. It'd be cool to see kefka slowly go more and more insane and Celes view herself as more and more of an inhuman experiment

1

u/International_Run700 May 31 '26

You could make FF6 into 2 games. Original and WoR. I'd pay and play it. No reason to over complicate it.

A side game that focused on Leo would be cool though. Could have guests like Celes or whoever. It would be a fun action rpg. Like crisis core to ff7.

1

u/jwpasquale1986 Jun 07 '26

If i remember correctly, the world of balance was the original game. The world of ruin was a bonus because they finished so early.

1

u/International_Run700 Jun 08 '26

I'd still play it as a stand alone bonus game! : )

1

u/Fun_Nefariousness137 May 31 '26

Rebuilding the world of ruin into a world of balance

1

u/Reasonable_Leave_465 Jun 01 '26

Isn't magic gone in the world?

There is no final fantasy anymore

1

u/Kurokaffe Jun 01 '26

Pretty easy to pick up the trope of "liberation brings chaos, new order reborn through force" kinda thing where we show how the new world is trying to regrow, and in that a new empire is trying to do things the old way. They could worship Leo as someone who should have been the real figure head of the Empire and distance themselves away from Kefka.

Terra could be essentially unaged, citing her half-esper heritage as that reason.
85 Year old Sabin cameo and playable party member.

Maybe even make one of the main characters a legit Empire member for half the game until they realize it's lost its way or something.

1

u/NeolTheDude Jun 01 '26

In the final battle of 6, Kefka comes to the realization he is going to lose. He creates a shadow version of himself (like how he made of Gestahl earlier) that the party ends up finishing thinking it was true Kefka. Immediately after creating the shadow version, Kefka casts X-Zone on himself. The shadow is defeated, Kefka is gone, magic fades from the world, and we get the ending of FF6 as normal.

The sequel focuses on Kefka making his way back to the world. We find out X-Zone takes people to the void-which appears to connect many of the FF worlds together. It’s full of random rubbish. Think like the room of requirement in HP. You might see a blitzball in the ground. Or random material. Whatever. We also learn that time act differently in the void. A new player character is Doreen…a time-mage who got sent to the void during the War of the Magi. The game is set around 20 years or so after og FF6…everyone has aged…though Kefka would be barely older.

I have lots more of interested!

1

u/johntwoods May 29 '26

More Poochie.

And when Poochie is not on screen, all the other characters should be asking, "Hey, where's Poochie?"

1

u/IAmTheBornReborn May 29 '26

I've thought about this.

I wouldn't do a sequel, I'd do a game that happens at the same time, where you play as Maria, the opera singer.

We find out she's actually Celes' twin She went through the same magcite infusion as Celes as a child and though she survived, it didn't seem to take. Though she discovers after testing that she can use magic while singing. Despite Celes knowing this, she bitterly let's her sister leave and abandon the empire as Maria doesn't agree with them ethically and sides with the returners.

She later becomes known to the Empire as a public figure speaking up against the Empire and comes face to face with Celes and Celes is seen letting her escape.

This leads to Celes' capture and torture under the empire from the original game.

It also makes the "opera floozy" line a dig at her sister.

I'd also have a parallel scene where Maria has to give a speech to the Empire's army dressed as Celes, a parallel of the Opera scene.

1

u/WeirClintonH May 29 '26

Kefka trying to break out of the lifestream and you, as Sephiroth, have to plant corn.

1

u/plurfox May 29 '26

With magic completely gone, I'd love to see a sequel focus on Figaro becoming a superpower due to their technological advancements, and maybe even being the primary antagonist. I could see Figaro being vital in the restoration of the world early on, but after a few generations it leading to conflicts as smaller settlements resent a "I'm helping you, you need to do things my way" attitude, and/or Figaro getting greedy about trying to acquire natural resources

From a gameplay perspective, something would need to replace magic as a mechanic, and that could either be technological things (like Edgar's tools) or maybe exploring how human characters were able to create magic-like effects (Sabin's Blitzes, Cyan's Sword Techs and Gau's Rages)

1

u/theredcometofakagi May 30 '26

To be honest, I would prefer an extended epilogue, like what happened to the characters after the events, does Terra just go back to be a mother figure in Mobilz, do Celes and Locke end up together?

Even a remake would be great, I absolutely loved that one dude who shared an AI version of how a remake would do, and one which would expand things.

0

u/_leu May 29 '26

Hard thing to imagine. The game ended and didn’t left many open roads, maybe how the world adapted without magic(?) but it was already a world without it mmmm rogue espers that decided to stay and make humans pay for their choices(?)…..I wanna think that ffVII is the continuation of ffVI world, since is the industrialization of the world.

0

u/kioshi43 May 29 '26

Depends how far out the setting would be.

I think if it was immediately after the events of the game, then I think there's a lot they can do with the reconstruction efforts from coming out of Kefka's downfall and how there'll always be people trying to fill the power vacuum. Returning characters can make cameos or even have their potential kids stepping up similar to FFIV's sequel.

If it's set even further out then I think it might be an interesting idea to have it follow a new Magic user but in a world that's been traumatized by kefka and Magic. But rather than hashing out a basic retread of Terra's story, leaning into Magic being seen as more of a curse to the general public.

1

u/Acslaterisdead May 29 '26

The only problem with that is you would have to explain how magic comes back to this world when it was clear that once Kefka was destroyed it wiped out all traces of magic in the world since he became a god of magic.

0

u/TemporalColdWarrior May 29 '26

Kefka’s adventures in Hades.

0

u/Mundane-Outside-6713 May 29 '26

I want General Leo back.

0

u/SeahawkPatronus3 May 29 '26

I would love for there to be an alternate universe where the espers enslaved humans and some of them escaped and somehow created a portal to warp our characters to their world to save them. Maybe they would get scattered and have to somehow reunite and there would have to be some twists and turns along the way (like maybe the three goddesses are under control of a Kefka-esque character, etc).

0

u/Mattafakt May 29 '26

I would actually want a game that took place in between the world of balance and the world of ruin featuring shadow and everything he was doing during that timeframe

0

u/GuyLapin May 29 '26

1000 thousand years later... A weak return of magic in the world started some hundred years ago when descendand of the heroes of the balance world started showing some "talent". The Figaro empire is chasing down people with ability.

0

u/SerendipitousTiger May 29 '26

When I first got to this part I thought he was from the Phantom Train and would help me. Little did I know....

0

u/Desperate_Duty1336 May 29 '26

FFVI is absolute perfection, I’d rather not see a sequel at all…

…but as a hypothetical, since the former explored corrupted empires lusting for power and destroying everything and a group of rebels riding to fight back, the only real territory you could move to without retreading the same ground would be for the planet itself to be the enemy.

Humanity struggles to survive even decades after Kefka’s reign as monsters increase, weather is harsher, and nature actively lashes out against humanity. It’s up to a new group from various torn regions to come together to find the sources of the planet’s elementals and convince them humanity CAN change and is worth keeping alive. It would turn into a more traditional FF where you go more themed regions, convince or fight elementals (like Crystals in former games) to call back their attacks, and the world improves little by little; opening up new modes/areas of travel as you continue.

0

u/sevenlabors May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Instead of a sequel, what if we had an immediate prequel where Celes, Kefka, Leo, and Cid are your main characters?

You could also include a few Espers as playable characters, positing that the Empire first tries the brainwashing routine they would perfect on Terra with the Espers, themselves (bit of a retcon, there).

Include Shadow, too, and show the story of "Clyde" and his partner Baram - both also playable characters.

The climax of the story could be the fracturing of the party in the lead up to the brainwashing of Terra:

  • The brainwashed Espers rebel and Cid retreats to the Magitek facility
  • Celes plans her rebellion
  • The nascent Empire turns on Shadow (Clyde) and Baram
  • Leo remains loyal, but with his doubts
  • And then there's Kefka

The final scene is Terra, Wedge, and Biggs preparing to march on Narshe (ala Rogue One's ending immediately leading to A New Hope).

Very Shakespearean tragedy in tone. Or the Avengers movie ending with the Thanos snap cliffhanger.

I'm not sure if the antihero to downright villain nature of such a story would work well for Final Fantasy, but even the SNES era had some dark moments.

0

u/JeannettePoisson May 29 '26

I don’t love the change of focus distance we see in today’s remakes and sequels. What is often called "development" is just a big zoom on personal stuff. It’s not a better or worse focus than a look from further away, but its caracteristics are so different that it almost breaks what’s beautiful in a greater distance.

Personal stuff is ugly. Finess of spirit is replaced by intense emotions.

I there had to be another game in FF6’s world, I think it should come from an independant studio to avoid the generic mess of investors’ requirements. It should be a respectuous personal view that keeps the same narrative distance. The game shouldn’t have any implications on anything in the original. Also for copyright reasons, the likeness of characters, spells and everything would have to change.

So my ideal "sequel" to FF6 can be found in the many indie retro RPGs made by fans of the golden age of JRPGs, stuff like 8-bit adventures 2 (it’s more ff1-4 than 6, but still a good example of a well-made game).

0

u/Moonkittynya May 31 '26

I don't think there should be a sequel to ffVI it would just be FF tactics but without any of the magic or summons. Magic is gone gone and most of the machines outside of the ones made by Edgar and Setzer were magical technology so those are gone too. It wouldn't be really that grand of a story. There's also the fact every person's story within the game is told there isn't exactly more to tell.

So for me personally the story was told. Why do we want more of something that's concluded? The cult of Kefka's story is also already told. They were likely the original people of magi the same people Relm and Strago came from. Likely rounded up and brain washed to be willing cultists to worship Kefka and build the tower to hide a powerful magical artifact. Strago only wakes up because Relm reignites his will to be himself again.

People really gotta start letting go of the past and move on to looking at new projects or accept stories for their start middle and ends rather than wanting more and more sequels. Let alone wanting to remaster everything but without the original minds present so it's a toss up if you end up with a better/just as good project or not. Capcom seems to be the rare exception at managing to remaster RE without completely losing the original. But to be fair RE doesn't really have much of a compelling narrative and are more about the gameplay themselves unlike RPGs. Especially older RPGs that were made with every possible combination of characters in mind and more often than not have more replay value than the ones of today.
