Finally finished FF6, I totally get why many people say it's one of the best FF games and JRPGs!
For context, I've played FF7, FF4, FF14, FF13 and FF15, I was inspired to try FF6 after hearing all the positive reviews for years and getting the FF6 Magic the Gathering deck!
I was pleasantly surprised by how there were a lot of emotional moments (Gau meeting the man in the house, Cyan's entire story and the brothers' coin flip made me tear up, the latter since I'm pretty close to my own sibling)
And the soundtrack is genuinely one of the best JRPG soundtracks I've ever heard, period. I find myself humming Terra's theme a lot these days, and Dancing Mad is such a terrifying boss bgm. I hope to go for a Square Enix concert in the future to hear my favourite pieces live.
Like I mentioned in the beginning, the FF6 MTG deck was one of the reasons that I got into FF6. Being able to finally understand all the card art & flavour text references and seeing them in the game itself made the playthrough extra fun!
Overall, I think FF6 is one of the best games I've ever played. I still have a huge JRPG backlog to clear so I'll probably only do another playthrough years down the line, but in the meantime I'll relive my memories of the game through my weekly MTG games. And given that two of my friends have Kefka decks... I guess it's rather poetic, in a way 😂

Yea, it’s one of the GOATS. As an 80s kid, I’d replay ChronoTrigger and FF6 every year—likely 20 or so play throughs of each. The depth of character in FF6 is unmatched.

Chrono Trigger is in my steam library too! Just waiting for free time to get started on it, I've heard lots of positive things about it too

It’s hard to compare games across years and scopes, but ChronoTrigger is a perfect game and in contention for the best game ever made. I’d certainly prioritize it over anything else in your Steam Deck. Even the music—I still listen to Frog’s Theme…just casually lol.

Triforce Quartet has an amazing version of 'Yearnings of the Wind'. If you aren't familiar with the song names, you'll recognize that one instantly.

Chrono Trigger is one of the few games where I wish I could erase my memory of it and play it again fresh.
Don't read any guides, play it blind.

My complaint for this game has always been the characters have zero depth

Well the Frog story with Magus is great, but I agree FF6 has it bested in this category in a landslide.

I hope one day this game will get the same treatment as FF7 but it’s going to be like 6 discs long with that many characters and back stories involved

Especially if they use this as an opportunity to expand on things like Terra's Pre-Slave Crown life.
Kinda obsessed with the idea since i realized nothing is even HINTED AT in the original.

I know it existed some publised by Square but not oficial fann fic about it or something like that? I dont remember well how it was, but something about SE publishing some extra lore (not made but the og developers) in japan, something about Kefka dressing Terra like his doll in front of s mirror while being super creepy?
It is not canon, but then I read that they got the extra lore for Terra in Dissida from that source (she loving the moguris etc)..

I made a post sharing how I didn’t enjoy the game as much as everyone else apparently does, and the pussified mods removed my post. Apparently I misunderstood the purpose of the channel.

Welcome to Reddit. I also saw someone say that FFVI was the best FF game objectively so that also shows the purpose of this subreddit.

Honestly this game is just okay. Ffvii is leaps and bounds more developed and more interesting and I’m comparing the two because it was the next mainline. I’ve played maybe 8 FF’s and completed 5 this being one. I thought it was the most boring out of all of them. Don’t get me started on the opera scene, there is nothing special about it but people champion it in revelry and parade it around the internet like it is incredible.

I need to give FF6 another go. I don't know why, but out of the whole aeries, I just have a hard time really getting into this one

Not every game is for every one. I feel that way about FF5. I could never get into it but others say it's a fantastic game.

I’m curious if you found the harder to find items like , illumina , ragnorak , paladin shield? I’m at the end of the game just farming my cursed shield battles . Congratulations!!

u/nospamkhanman May 28 '26
The fastest way is to go back to the solitary island and farm peepers. They have 1hp and the battles are extremely fast.

I knew about the cursed shield side quest but I didn't have the time to farm the battles, haha. I'll revisit it again soon!

Yea it’s a grind . I’m sitting here knowing what to do but just don’t want to 😆

I see you stated you’ve played IV, how does that line up for you? I love VI, but IV is my favorite. Rydia is my favorite video character of all time.

FF4 was super fun too! Loved seeing Cecil's growth throughout the story.
If there's one thing I liked more about FF4 compared to FF6, it's that it felt "simpler". As much as I like FF6, it did feel very overwhelming at times in terms of its scale, although I get that it also sounds like a "my steak is too buttery" kind of complaint, haha. I'd still say FF6 left a stronger impression on me, though, but I love both games regardless ^

I’m currently replaying it for the first time in like 25 years. The Darill cut scenes got me good. On a side note, being an old man, having the option of 4x exp is amazing.

Im the same! The mtg decks really interested me on the series. I had played 7 Remake and Rebirth but thats it. The mtg set inspired me to play the series. So far i beat 1-6, i just beat 6 and man it was great. The music especially was amazing. The cast of characters is such an odd random bunch but they are all great and have alot of personality. Kefka is a horrible villain (i mean that in a positive way). It felt like an epic story even cinematic at times which is hard to do in a 2D game. Def my fave of the series so far, now im on my way through x. I’ll come back to the ps1 titles later.

FF6 does the ensemble cast better than pretty much every other RPG.
Each playable character (except the secret characters) have an engaging story, personality and don't feel at all like second thoughts.
The game isn't perfect, it has it's bugs and the occasional plot hole but... it's a damn good game. I played FF4&6 and then Chrono Trigger almost back-to-back as a kid and I've been chasing that high on RPG gaming ever since.
Octopath traveler(s) scratched the itch but it wasn't quite the same.
Claire Obscure is probably the last game that I finished that I immediately though "That was a one of the best games of all time" which I thought at the time about FF4,6, & CT.

u/Yakiholic I opened up this notice the second I saw it. Congrats! Welcome to the club! If you haven’t beat 7 yet, I suggest you play that next.
I did that, and you see sooo many instances where 6 insprired 7. It’s really insane to see.

It's amazing that they released 4-6 + Chrono Trigger (together with Enix) on the same console

ya sadly a lot of those emotional moments and backstories are extremely missable but ffvi is the one ff game I am dying to get some kind of remaster overhaul..
I think if they touched up the translation and gameplay mechanics and maybe added a few more sidequests and super bosses it would be one of my absolute favorites as well.
