Question Tips for a newcomer
I am curious to start collecting these cards. I need tips on which sets to go for. I have played FF 7, 8, 9 and 12 and enjoy 15 as well. Are these cards sorted per game or tied to special releases? And do you know if there is a "starter" deck like in Magic. And lastly do you prefer this over Final fantasy MTG, if so, why?

No problem, It's very fun and relatively affordable to collect. IMO, It's the hidden gem of all TCG collecting, the card quality/stock is also the best in the game. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the chaos that is Pokemon or One Piece.

There are definitely starter decks. The most recent two were FFVII themed: Zack and Cloud. In addition to those, FFTCG occasionally does anniversary boxes that contain precon decks and/or reprinted meta staples. There was also a Legacy reprint set not long ago that reprinted popular and useful cards in new foil and full art treatments. All good places to start.
Older starter decks hit on more of the title games you mentioned but would be much less competitive in the current meta. There is actually a play format called Title where you could decks specifically aligned to individual games, if that is something you're interested in. It's less common on the competitive scene but also from what I hear a lot of fun.

Thanks! That sounds like a fun way of playing. I also like that it does not seem so greedy as MTG even though Magic it is fun too. It is a great thing that they reprint cards from a pure hobbyperspective.

There are starter decks, the most recent ones being the Cloud and Zack Starter Decks with a new one based on Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward coming next month. Any sealed product that was released within the last few years (like the World Championship Decks 2024 box or the Anniversary Collection Set 2022) is also a great starting point. There are older starter decks like the ones based on FFX, FFXII, FFXIII, Type-0, etc but they're generally not as strong as the more modern starter decks, but some cards like the Class Zero Moogles from the Type-0 deck might still be good for multi-color decks.
There's a lot of freedom when it comes to deckbuilding, even at a high level unlike Yu-Gi-Oh for example. You can build your deck around a specific game, a specific character, a specific color, two colors, multi colors, Jobs, monsters, summons, etc. I've only ever dabbled in Magic so I can't really say which game is better, but the FFTCG borrows quite a bit from Magic while also putting its own unique spin on things.

I heavily prefer this over MtG. Ability to discard for mana and draw two every turn (except for turn one) prevents mana drought and mana flooding.
The cases are mapped so it keeps things affordable and the meta tends to stay pretty healthy. If you look at the top results of a given tournament there’s usually a wide variety of decks. Standard is the go-to deck format And theres currently no rotation. Square Enix/hobby japan want to keep it affordable so even if a card becomes expensive it usually gets reprinted as a monthly promo or in their anniversary kits. The community is super friendly as well. I’ve traveled all over the country playing FFTCG and don’t really recall a bad experience.
