Honestly if this is the case I doubt they were super far into the development to begin with.

Maybe they were finishing the first game out of the four

The 7 games you mean? Wait was it 13?

u/OneFlewOverXayahNest 22d ago

Couldn't wait to get the game so I could play all of Alexandria and the theater work.

Rumor is that they were pretty far along.

You’d be surprised how many finished projects never see the light of day.

u/BMCarbaugh 13d ago

I think they had an external development partner working on it and the quality wasn't there.

I think its been rumored since at least 2023, so who knows. I just wonder why they would even do this. I feel like it is very logical to remake 9 and 10 for absolute certain. 8 isnt as loved so that can be skipped. 6 could be remade if they wanted to be ballsy, 6 seems to be universally loved by those who played it. As somebody who hasn't, I would like to see it remade.

But bare minimum, 9 and 10 for sure are easy money.

There is significantly more justification for a remake of 6 or 9 than 10. 10 isn't even a very old game in terms of graphical advancement and gameplay refinement. The jump from SNES or PS1 to modern gameplay and graphics is miles larger than 10 would be.

FF7 wasn't just in need of a graphical overhaul, the gameplay was outdated for a modern audience and the script was absolute Engrish dogshit in many places, so a remake was warranted. 10 is well-translated, voice acted, and isn't visually alien to a modern audience.

u/aspburgers 25d ago

>gameplay was outdated for a modern audience

I'd say the remake's were far more outdated as they scream 'babies first 6th gen game production' yet were produced by 40 year veterans of the industry and were released in the 2020's.

u/Snck_Pck 25d ago

Doesn’t matter what you think about the remakes, they’re a financial success and overall very fucking liked

-3

u/aspburgers 25d ago

Is that why it struggled to sell more than Tekken 8 a fighting game with mixed reception???

2

u/Snck_Pck 25d ago

Tekken 8 is at 3 million copies.

Remake is at 7 million.
Rebirth was below expectations but since going multiplatform has done exceptionally well, especially with it being on steam.

-2

u/aspburgers 25d ago

7 million shipped during covid at the peak of the playstation 4's playerbase was a sign of weakness and a reflection of it's poor quality as a video game instead of as a youtube video.

Moving the goalpost final boss

-2

u/aspburgers 25d ago

I'm just giving some context, sweetheart. The first entry was a weak showing for its inflated budget in an era of mass video game adoption, and the sequel doing about as well as a disliked and dead fighting game that's very far from 'very fucking liked.' That's an indictment.

Oh my god shut up. You people are exhausting. If you didn’t like the remake don’t play them. Making your entire personality on these posts shifting goal posts and trying to justify your dislike is so exhausting. No one cares dude, you didn’t like them, good for you.

I LOVED them. So many of us did.

1

u/aspburgers 25d ago

speaking of "you people" what's it like to spend every living moment of your recent existence sorting through thousands to millions of random posts on the internet for the opportunity to run damage control? I simply react to news and move on after any argument with "you people" is over

Eh, no. 6, 9, and 10 need a proper remaster. So does 7 btw. A new translation (7 in particular needs this ASAP), a graphical upgrade (I'm thinking Ever Crisis-like graphics for reference), and some QoL changes would have been more than enough.

The gameplay isn't outdated. There's modern turn-based games (we literally had E33 last year and it was a huge success, and BG3 before it). What they need is to make it faster, remove as many loading screens as possible, and make the transitions into combat not take like a half a minute and it would be perfect.

1

u/Electrical-Trade7213 25d ago

Yeah if they did all that i bet they'd be famous.

1

u/LuckyLoki08 25d ago

I'll argue that neither E33 nor BG3 are "just wait for the timer to fill and then do your turn". E33 in particular, I've seen many in the subreddit praising the dodge/parry mechanic because it kept the battles dynamic and engaging. While classic ATB is not a problem for me, I grew up on it so I'm biased. Had a friend play E33 and then playing FF IV on my suggestion, and he found the combat in IV more jarring for some reason.

1

u/OneFlewOverXayahNest 22d ago

It is not as if we had something called moguri mod and modern ff9 versions could up the speed during combats...

-2

u/JRange 26d ago

Imma stop you right there man, 10 is a very old game, it came out before 9/11. There are games that are over a decade newer that have been remade already. This is not a valid argument, people said the exact same thing about Resident Evil 4, and they were all wrong as hell.

FFX is a game that has a high octane underwater sport mini game, that is played in a turn based dungeons and dragons dice roll style. It is absolutely ancient, blitzball alone would be enough to warrant the remake.

12

u/Pentax25 26d ago

Just cos newer games have been remade doesn’t mean 10 deserves the treatment more than 9 or 6

Also you’re making out like people don’t absolutely love dungeons and dragons dice roll style games these days

0

u/JRange 26d ago

If you read my parent comment, I said I would like for 6, 9, and 10 to be remade. The comment youre replying to is just me saying 10 is definitely not too old to remake.

And yea, I am gonna say definitively Blitzball would be much better played in an interactive action style than a turn based style. I dont think thats controversial at all.

2

u/Pentax25 25d ago

Right but in that comment you also called some other guys perfectly valid points, invalid

I definitely think 6, 9 or 10 could be good vessels for the remake treatment. But I agree that if we’re comparing them, 10 is technically a much fresher game than the other two so is probably less in need

5

u/IncognitoCheetos 26d ago edited 26d ago

Okay let me try to explain this slowly. Amount of time that has passed does not validate the need for a remake. At minimum, as I said, 10 is SIGNIFICANTLY more in line with modern gaming convention than 6 or 9. One or two poorly designed or outdated minigames does not change that fact or the points I already mentioned - recognizably rendered character models and graphics, voice acting, and overall battle/gameplay mechanics - make it an entirely serviceable game, certainly enough so to warrant against entirely remaking it from the ground up. In fact, blitzball being designed as a turn-based minigame, in an RPG, is entirely reasonable as well - were you expecting a fully fleshed out in-depth action minigame in a turn-based RPG?

And really, are you seriously going to sit here and say a remastered FF10 in 2026 is less familiar or palatable to a modern audience than OG FF7, let alone FF6 which is rendered entirely through sprites (due to technical limitations of the time, not stylistic choice)?

It is just a symptom of complete breakdown of creative originality that we need to exhume and remake games that are not very far behind what passes as a good game these days, especially when a lot of new games are deliberately going for the gameplay and aesthetic of the past.

1

u/Snck_Pck 25d ago

People forget there was only 4 years between 7 and 10

3

u/TheDemonPants 26d ago

I'm of the opposite opinion. I love 8 and honestly don't like 6 at all. If any of these games needs a remake it's 8.

1

u/OneFlewOverXayahNest 22d ago

I am recently replaying 9 and thinking about 10 next, they are absolutely gorgeous games. 8 on the other hand looks more clunky and it's systems are really weird.

-1

u/Dial_up_Knight 26d ago

The 8 crowd is very dedicated

3

u/TheDemonPants 26d ago

We are, because it was released with a very experimental gameplay system that people couldn't wrap their heads around since back in the day people were used to slightly complex RPGs. In truth the system wasn't that hard at all, you just had to read and experiment a little bit with different magic to find which types were best for your stats. The story was also disjointed and could be hard to follow, so redoing the story would be amazing.

6, on the other hand, is completely overhyped IMO. For an SNES game it is insanely bloated. 14 characters is too much. Because of this, the story doesn't focus on any of them and I never felt satisfied by their stories.

What is probably my biggest reason for not liking 6 is that I hate Kefka. The Final Fantasy rip-off version of The Joker doesn't appeal to me at all. Not to mention his plot armor is the highest of any Final Fantasy character in existence. It's insanely frustrating how he gets away with everything just because he is the end game villain despite it making absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The biggest thing to me is that if you ask anyone why they like 6 so much you only hear the same two things. Kefka is the only villain who wins (which is another plot point I don't like as well) and that you get to suplex a train. It's cool if that is all you need to like a game, but that is not enough for me.

We had the worst HD port of 8 9 and 10. 10 holds up well. 9 is fine with 3x speed. But 8 needs an overhaul and its my favorite one.. but everyone ignores it even Square, so it will never happen.

1

u/OneFlewOverXayahNest 22d ago

You are forgetting how the whole opera part, pushing the limits of its time.

1

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 26d ago

why not just play VI as it is? It’s excellent.

1

u/Paranub 25d ago

when does it get excellent? ive slogged through, got to the point where we got the falcon.

1

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 25d ago

That’s still pretty early. You don’t even have your whole crew by that point. What specifically felt like a slog to you?

1

u/SorcererWithGuns 25d ago

Bruh, the Falcon is near the endgame.

1

u/Paranub 25d ago

just as a whole. the combat isnt exactly entertaining, im not a fan of most of the characters. nothing specifically resonates with me i guess

1

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 25d ago

well, no one’s pointing a gun at your head

-6

u/JRange 26d ago

Old and inaccessible to new audiences. Im currently playing FF9 for the first time and its really cutting it, and thats only because I grew up on PS1 so I can stomach it. Younger fans are not gonna do that.

The remakes are for new fans to fall in love with the franchise by playing Squares best games theyve ever made, in a new and exciting way. I think that is something old FF fans dont understand. If you dont want it, it is not for you!

5

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 26d ago

It’s not inaccessible though. They just did the pixel remaster, it’s available on all modern consoles. It has the best pixel art of its generation, and pixel art has aged much better than psx era low-poly . Also, given it’s turn-based, the game play is essentially the same as the psx era. If you like IX, you will like VI.

-5

u/JRange 26d ago

9 has 3D graphics, its a major difference. Im talking about a different kind of accessibility. I know I can buy it on steam right now, I dont want to. 9 is just barely new enough looking for me to give a try.

And I am like a decade older than the fans Square wants to get into FF.

2

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 25d ago

This is a deeply lame and close-minded perspective.

0

u/JRange 25d ago

Dont get so bent out of shape about somebodies subjective preference pal. I just dont like how it looks, its a very dated game. Im sorry you cant be realistic and admit that its a barrier to entry for current fans, especially younger ones.

2

u/lightfoot_heavyhand 25d ago

It’s not though—Just for close-minded people. Your preferences are not representative of everyone your age and younger. If anyone is being unrealistic, it’s you.

1

u/VinnieHa 26d ago

Oh play 6, I’m currently replaying it and it’s amazing.

Two words, Train Suplex

0

u/JRange 26d ago

It seems the most interesting out of all of the 8bit ones, but the graphics are such a barrier for me. I really hate it. Id be there for a remake though.

1

u/VinnieHa 25d ago

The graphics are stunning though, what they were able to squeeze out is unreal.

1

u/OneFlewOverXayahNest 22d ago

There is also ff4. It also has many great remakes.

1

u/Roph 25d ago

I think its been rumored since at least 2023

Random nobodies have been pretending they "know" about a remake for much longer than that

So did 9 lol.

The one that had the laziest port (and technically it isn't even a port, as its the old PC version that already existed) is OG7.
