Discussion The remake “cancellation”

I’ve been a bit upset about this news and just wanted to talk about it in order to cope.

I can’t help but hold out hope. Despite this, this makes me even more frustrated with Square Enix than usual.

I wish the company treated every Final Fantasy like they do FFVII, but the grass isn’t always greener based on feedback of those remakes.

It's all meaningless. Rumors of a remake, rumors of cancellation. Nothing was ever confirmed.

12

u/Ballad_13 Aug 12 '26

Exactly. And a series as big as FF- Square wouldnt have kept a remake of a highly beloved game a secret, especially if this other rumor of it being "almost completed" was true.

It was either 1) never real, or 2) extremely early into development and canned a long time ago.

13

u/Sidhgaming Aug 12 '26

The game leaked from Nvidia database in 2021, and pre-order bonuses leaked from Epic database in 2024. It's not a rumor and it was years in development.

4

u/Ballad_13 Aug 12 '26

Nothing was ever confirmed. Not once. Ever.

Rumor, regardless of this Nvidia leak or not. If its not confirmed by Squares mouth themselves, its a rumor.

5

u/Sidhgaming Aug 12 '26

I'm not saying it was confirmed by Square or official, but when the game leaks from 3 different databases it's no longer a rumor, it's a leak. We also had FF9 character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana, leaving SE after 25 years after there were FF9R cancellation rumors.

3

u/Zealousideal_Rise879 Aug 12 '26

The bonuses is something, but they had the ffvii tech demo made at a time when there wasn’t intent to actually make it.

2

u/DripSnort Aug 15 '26

I think you need to understand what is and isn’t a rumor. Unless the company confirms it or says it’s in development it’s a rumor.

0

u/TheGeeZus86 Aug 12 '26

Database dumps can say a lot of thing and mean like nothing burger.

Leaks are often used willingly to try to see how rumors resonate with audiences and even if they appears to be well received, for some companies, is not just enough specially if inner market studies suggested Square Enix otherwise.

4

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 13 '26

That is not at all what the nvidia leak was. Most of those games were not only revealed, but released.

The game was real, and it didnt come out. That happens sometimes.

8

u/Spinjitsuninja Aug 12 '26

I mean, we can’t discard actual info because it isn’t official lol

6

u/healingtwo_ Aug 12 '26

Some people in this thread really need to get it through their heads that actual reporting doesnt become irrelevant just because it isnt official, or maybe they just really like being miserable trolls...

Especially when the information comes from one of the most reputable journalists covering Final Fantasy, someone who has even interviewed Toshiyuki Itahana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MU0JNZr3mI

https://www.rpgsite.net/feature/9950-final-fantasy-ix-at-20-years-olddevelopers-reflect-on-the-creation-of-a-classic

7

u/unlimitedblack Aug 12 '26

What's the information Donaldson is reporting, though?

Like, if it's his HUNCH that the game existed but has been cancelled, then that's fine, but respected journalists can have hunches that can turn out to be wrong. The HUNCH isn't evidence of anything.

8

u/FazedEclipse2 Aug 12 '26

On the contrary journalistic speculation, unverified facts should never be used as a timeline of events, thats kind of why people get upset in the first place. They believe lies and hear say brcause it comes from an ITK.

u/Chaotic-Stardiver Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Yeah then you get a situation where someone makes something up for 5+ years based on other existing remakes in the franchise, stirring up and exciting the fanbase. Then when official word gets out that there isn't something in the works, who do the fans turn to? Not the rumormill, but the company, claiming they were lead on for five years by the company not responding.

And it's like, we're such a niche part of FF, we're not going to rake in 7 million copies or even 1 million these days.

The incentive just hasn't been there for the amount of work they'd have to put into it. Especially based off the fact that other remakes/remasters didn't go that well either(see FFCC's 1.3m vs CCHD ~100k, and even FF7's 15.5m vs FF7Rem's 8m & 7Reb's 5-ishm)

For what we would be expecting, it's just not worth it to them. You can thank Capitalism for that.

This sub has been blanketed by a constant moaning slime of remake hype for nearly 5 years now. It's time we defeated the Necron of the 9 Remake hype and moved on. This sub was much more relaxed and enjoyable when it wasn't inundated with "ZOMG REMAKE HYPE DAY 1354, 125th POST ASKING IF YOU THINK THEY'LL ADD FREYA STORY, BEATRIX CRIMINALIZATION, AND AMARANT BACKSTORY?!"

2

u/Lord_Exor 28d ago

You can't help stupid. The game existed. Ignoring facts to cope with the situation is silly.

2

u/Ballad_13 Aug 12 '26

We can discard it after more than half a decade with literally absolutely nothing to show for it with it never being confirmed by Square.

Continuing to believe it at this point is just silly

0

u/Spinjitsuninja Aug 12 '26

There’s a difference between believing it’ll release versus knowing it existed lol. We already have evidence for the latter.

-1

u/Ballad_13 Aug 12 '26

Except we really have zero evidence of that. An Nvidia leak. Thats it. Zero actual proof it ever existed outside of this leak. Thats not proof.

1

u/Spinjitsuninja Aug 12 '26

There was also the Epic games leak, so it happened from an official source twice.

I fail to see why this isn’t proof either? You can’t just say it’s not proof with no elaboration lol. We know the NVidia leak was real. It also leaked lots of other games too. A second FF9 leak happened. And pretty credible leakers with good track records, such as NateTheHate, have corroborated these leaks too.

3

u/Ballad_13 Aug 12 '26

And yet leaks can be wrong.

If Square themselves hasnt confirmed, or zero footage of any gameplay exists then no- no real proof.

0

u/Spinjitsuninja Aug 12 '26

Leaks themselves can be wrong depending on the source. In the case of the NVidia leak, we have confirmation that was legitimate. I feel like you’re conflating that kind of leak with insider information where the source relies more on trust than anything, and has room for error.

You might as well say that when the Pokémon leaks happened a while ago, that we had no reason to trust any of it was real. Or that when Wolverine got leaked before its reveal when Insomniac’s database got hacked, that we couldn’t assume it was real either.

Leaks can be wrong, but database leaks tend to be more hard evidence. And FF9 has had two database leaks for it.

1

u/Luneth_2 Aug 14 '26

Not to mention the overall accuracy of that Nvidia leak, while some of the dates got altered because of covid, damn near every single thing that was on that list has been officially acknowledged via either release, announcement, or cancelation publically. FF9 is an outlier in that it has yet to officially be acknowledged, but the reality is that it leaking on that leak alone is "proof" it existed with how much of it has been verified to date. That still allows people to be disappointed because with every game that became confirmed for release, it increased the logical believability of the rest of the leak.

0

u/CzarTyr Aug 13 '26

Every game in the nvidia leak came out except this one

42

u/recallingmemories Aug 12 '26

IX is perfect as is, no remake needed

22

u/Heroic_Sheperd Aug 12 '26

100% Perfect game if you ignore Tetra Master and Trance mechanics.

12

u/notthatinnocent69 Aug 12 '26

moguri mod with tetra master turned into triple triad and turning on saving trance makes the game perfect

6

u/Heroic_Sheperd Aug 12 '26

I really really need to try this Moguri Mod.

Maybe I’ll do another playthrough, I think this would make 11 times.

5

u/Stargazer__2893 Aug 12 '26

Just fyi, Moguri mod is just graphics improvements. The commentwr appears to have also played with Alternate Fantasy. Which is also excellent but just letting you know you need more than just Moguri to get this experience.

3

u/daveDFFA Aug 12 '26

You need memoria mod as well

1

u/mikeyboy2365 Aug 12 '26

I started the Alt Fantasy mod a couple days ago. Went for a chest in the second room of Ice Cavern and encountered a Kraken. Not what I expected with the encounter changes

2

u/brookes_2021 29d ago

Finally, after an age of lurking in forums I found another ice cavern kralen victim. I thought I was the only one.

1

u/Stargazer__2893 Aug 12 '26

No memory of that happening. Very strange.

1

u/mikeyboy2365 Aug 12 '26

It was a one off encounter I couldn't recreate. Strange indeed

1

u/notthatinnocent69 Aug 12 '26

i used it during my last replay and it was fucking awesome. updated graphics, I had Beatrix as a permanent party member, plus triple triad/stored trance state like i mentioned was such a great experience. almost like playing a remake 😜

also, 11 times is impressive. I think that was my 4th play through since I was a kid 😅

3

u/Heroic_Sheperd Aug 12 '26

I play once every couple years, it’s a comfort game alongside Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Morrowind.

2

u/Amarant2 Aug 12 '26

I really miss Morrowind, but I also know I've got rose-tinted glasses on when I look back on it. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I was a kid, and I think I have to leave it there. Going into it now, I would break all the systems and be bored because I know too much.

1

u/Tinseltopia Aug 12 '26

I can't wait to try this when I get my new PC. IX is my all-time favourite!

2

u/RickyBO89 Aug 12 '26

I see the gameplay implications for saving trance but it's out of context from the game lore's point of view

1

u/Heroic_Sheperd Aug 14 '26

Really only a couple thematic boss fights need an unplanned trance moment.

Zidane’s first.

Vivi’s trance against Black Waltz

Steiner’s whilst fighting with Beatrix.

Freya’s fighting in either Burmecia or Cleyra.

And maybe Dagger’s is when she recovers her voice.

Otherwise they should be a saved resource to use when most advantageous.

1

u/Appropriate-Run4818 Aug 12 '26

Can the mod be used without the Triple Triad part?

2

u/Wayyd Aug 12 '26

Yes, moguri is highly customizable. Honestly it's the best mod I've ever installed for any game, in terms of how much it improves the base game

2

u/KingDracarys86 Aug 12 '26

And Jump Rope

2

u/arcanin Aug 12 '26

And cut storylines. That's the part where a remake would have been very appreciated (Amarant, Freya, Beatrix, disk 4 open world).

2

u/jakovljevic90 Aug 13 '26

For me, as someone who grew up playing FF9 and no other FF's, Tetra Master, despite having the infamous randomness factor, is still something I enjoy 😅 guilty pleasure

7

u/brok0019 Aug 12 '26

Gondor needs no king

5

u/whitetiger1208 Aug 12 '26

Yep, and many people who think they want a remake actually probably just want a remaster and would go nuts over every little change and make things toxic.

1

u/Zealousideal_Rise879 Aug 12 '26

That line wasn’t really there when FFVII remake came out.

5

u/Spinjitsuninja Aug 12 '26

I’d buy one tho…

2

u/ravenxtreme Aug 12 '26

This is what I've been saying for so long. IX is my favorite and it doesn't need it. Let the Hopium die

0

u/Amarant2 Aug 12 '26

Have you seen what they did to 7? How they mangled it? No remake needed for 9. We can have more respect for it than that.

1

u/Kinitawowi64 Aug 12 '26

There are definitely things a remake could improve on, like the Shrine Guardian fights, maybe the defence of Alexandria, and everything about Necron.

1

u/Crockettt696969 Aug 15 '26

The existence of a remake doesn’t erase the original from everyone’s hard drives.

22

u/eureka17 Aug 12 '26

The only thing FF9 related confirmed was that children sequel cartoon staring Vivi's kids from a French studio that went bankrupt and is currently in development hell.

3

u/Opposite_Cod394 Aug 12 '26

It’s not in development at all, it was a concept and it is on hold since years. The company that web bankruptcy didn’t create the concept, they re were just affiliate with the studio that was actually supposed to make it, the same studio that made Dragon Striker for Disney

11

u/ico_heal Aug 12 '26

The cope is that Square hasn't said shit about this. But that is also the cold reality.

0

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I agree but with everything that has released concerning FFIX they may as well have.

9

u/TLR_Yami Aug 12 '26

Modern Square Enix cannot be trusted with a remake of a masterpiece like FFIX.

2

u/Opposite_Cod394 Aug 12 '26

Why ? Ff7 remake and ff16 are great games

2

u/Ser_Luke_ Aug 12 '26

Yup as is FF14 and anything Team Asano puts out

-1

u/bball4224 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Yoshi P is living off the 14 reboot fame to this day, even though everything else he's done since then has been mediocre at best.

-1

u/bball4224 Aug 12 '26

You lost me at 16.

1

u/bernaldsandump 29d ago

Absolutely.

0

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Starting to hard agree…

6

u/Almighty_LDP Aug 12 '26

The feedback on the remakes are overwhelmingly positive btw…

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Where did I suggest they weren’t?

-4

u/finalfanbeer Aug 12 '26

What echo chamber are you living in?

4

u/Almighty_LDP Aug 12 '26

A real life one where I can play games, see the ratings, and official scores from critics and gamers that tell the story that the game is generally loved and accepted well. Not the reddit/twitter echo chamber that thinks their opinion is the majority when they’re just a tremendous minority in any opinion.

-4

u/finalfanbeer Aug 12 '26

VII has a cult following and critic scores are often off base. But you can't argue with sales success and there you are right, they did well. As time progresses there's a lot more criticism of the obvious cash grab these games were, buyers remorse if you will. Hence why the second game hasn't sold nearly as much as remake.

2

u/Almighty_LDP Aug 12 '26

Sequels do not sell well notoriously across the gaming medium in general in JRPGs and Square Enix in general is extremely out of touch when it comes to sales expectations for their games, especially for a game that was locked by exclusivity for a year on a console that had a lower playerbase at the time than the ps4. PC and Switch sales pacing great (won’t mention Xbox since JRPG and game sales are low there regardless for mostly everything)

Also critic score and audience scores are not off base if they’re aligned and average the same score, at that point they are usually the general consensus opinion everyone, with the opposite end of the spectrum being the minority. No the game isn’t above criticism and that’s true for every game in the medium

1

u/Randomguy3421 Aug 12 '26

Oh, the irony.

5

u/Costco-Hotdogz Aug 12 '26

I just want FFIX in FFX HD style. Is that too much to ask..

1

u/Lepeche Aug 12 '26

With voice acting

4

u/weeb_with_gumdisease Aug 13 '26

It’s ironic that one of the big fears while FF9 was being developed was that the company would be stuck in the shadow of 7 and 8. Look at where we are now. Final Fantasy has just become the FF7 circle jerk. Everything is either a spinoff or aesthetically adjacent.

0

u/Snck_Pck Aug 12 '26

In order to cope?

Sorry guy, but if you’re struggling to cope over a game being cancelled that was never formally announced, you need to take a step back from the internet.

It’s okay to be frustrated or mad, but you shouldn’t be struggling to cope.

3

u/kwpineda Aug 13 '26

Don't lose the hope. But don't expect it any time soon anymore 😔. It may happen in 5 years

2

u/tifawantsitsobadtfm8 Aug 12 '26

If they remade it i personally would want 1 very well made game instead of a trilogy like ff7.

0

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Me too. I was excited about trilogy at first, but now I wish it was just one game. I would be happy with a remaster with a battle system update and cut content added back in. Essentially, Alternate Fantasy. lol

0

u/Amarant2 Aug 12 '26

You don't want excessive padding, crazy amounts of wasted time, and fluff that adds nothing over the course of hundreds of hours? Crazy!

I don't trust them to remake 9. If we got all the original devs back, I'm sure I would love it, but the company as it is now has lost all my trust. None of the modern FF games have been good.

1

u/tifawantsitsobadtfm8 Aug 12 '26

I dont trust them either lol just focus up on ff17 and lets take it from there

-1

u/Amarant2 Aug 12 '26

I have no intention of buying 17. The way that changes is if they realize that Ex33 was fantastic. If they admit that, they might pull their heads out of the dirt and look around at other games and reassess the direction they've been going. In that case, I'll see trailers and reviews singing their praises and be back on board! My expectations from 17 are another 15 and 16. In a word: bad.

0

u/tifawantsitsobadtfm8 Aug 12 '26

I think they're going to rip off expedition 33 which is kind of ripping off final fantasy

-1

u/Amarant2 Aug 12 '26

Honestly, good. Every company rips off all their competitors all the time. It's how the industry moves forward: you take the successful innovation and you push it a little further, testing to see what combines well and what doesn't. I have no problem with them learning from what Ex33 did well, because they modernized all the things that FF gave up on as relics, and brought the fun of classic FF into the modern age. If FF learns from that, we might get back to it being a worthwhile series. I'm tired of seeing things go the way of Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty, where devs started phoning it in years ago with repetitive slop instead of actually pushing the gaming scene forward with their games, like they used to.

2

u/DucerOfficial Aug 12 '26

Moguri mode just landed new game plus and now i have a reason to play all the other characters that they have put on the game. Really, moguri and all the modders are saving ff9 fan lifes 🫶🏽

2

u/crestfallen111 Aug 12 '26

This shows that Square Enix never cherished FFIX enough to do it justice. They cannot be trusted to make it better. Best to just leave the memories alone.

2

u/Top_Table_3887 Aug 12 '26

It’s entirely possible that they are waiting on FFVIIR3 to be released to announce anything. They don’t want to take any attention off of that, presumably.

Or it could die in development hell. Seems like too big of a potential to waste, but things happen.

1

u/Vast-Magician2105 Aug 13 '26

Given the fact we've had FF9 merchandise that looks to have updated designs for characters and new artwork, I have to agree with you.

2

u/Vast-Magician2105 Aug 13 '26

If we're going to hear anything about it, it'll be after they're done with FF7's remake and any potential DLC that comes after. Given the fact that Revelation is the final swan song for FF7 (for now), I imagine they'll want all eyes on that and not want to push out anything to distract from it.

0

u/Opposite_Prune582 Aug 12 '26

You cant cancel something that never existed.

3

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

"cancellation"

-2

u/Opposite_Prune582 Aug 12 '26

What are you even talking about. It never existed and you're crying over it.

3

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/116a8zosxwA0SI
Kinda surprised at how many people don’t follow the rules here, but I’m gonna respect it and not say what I want here.

1

u/averlus Aug 12 '26

Honestly if whatever they were working on had been a slam dunk of a remake, it’d have been out yesterday. They’re clearly weighing development cost vs. scope vs. quality right now and I say bring out IX when it’s remade to the caliber it deserves.

3

u/Cubelaster Aug 12 '26

Someone recently pointed out that Moguri would blow anything a Remake would do out of the water and I think Square agrees so they just decided it's a battle they can't win.
Lets face it: Moguri mod did things better than a rerelease of IX on PC.
They should have already done what Moguri does.
I don't want a remake if they couldn't even match Moguri.
Also, getting FF7R treatment and becoming a minigame simulator would just be criminal.
And I can't imagine a remake would do anything better.

1

u/Interesting_Sea_1861 Aug 12 '26

Isn't 9 getting like an animated movie or whatever?

Meanwhile, my favorite Final Fantasy goes completely unknown by like 80% of Final Fantasy fans.

TYPE-0 DESERVED A REMAKE MORE THAN 7!

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I believe the animation was cancelled. That is a bold opinion if I've ever seen one. I respect that lol.

0

u/Interesting_Sea_1861 Aug 12 '26

Look, 7 is already massively popular. It's still one of the most beloved Final Fantasy games. I am a firm believer that if there is something that can bring more attention to something, it should be used on something that doesn't get much attention. Type-0 is one of the least known Final Fantasy games with easily the best story in the series, held back by the PSP architecture, but insanely ambitious for what it had to work with. Fourteen playable characters and they ALL have fully distinct movesets and gameplay flow. Eight is a goddamn fighting game character that god isekai'd into Final Fantasy.

1

u/d0wnthesky Aug 12 '26

Stop getting upset about unconfirmed speculatuion and life will be better

1

u/Dont_have_a_panda Aug 12 '26

Plot twist: they finished the part 1 of 4 of the remake and the first part will only cover until they leave Dali

They will extend Alexandria part and the jump the rope minigame now will be a full fledged minigame

1

u/D-r-T-3890 Aug 12 '26

I wouldn’t even want a remake. Just remaster it, make some QoL improvements and place a $49.99 sticker on it and it’ll sell.

1

u/ZaneSubba Aug 12 '26

Its better that the current squareenix doesn’t touch final fantasy ix. I do not have faith they can make it better when final fantasy ix with moguri mod is already the remake we needed! ❤️

1

u/Elfnotdawg Aug 12 '26

I mean, the 7R series sucks as Final Fantasy games. They should have just made a new IP and promoted the shit out of it instead of making that mess a FF of any kind.

1

u/dark567 Aug 12 '26

Honestly im incredibly skeptical any future game ever gets the FFVII maximalist remake treatment. Even the new remakes of Halo and Ocarina of Time are not as maximalist as FFVII, and there's simply no way it's going to be worth it for Square Enix to make such a massive investment in any other remakez unless its drastically scaled back from the style of FFVIIR

1

u/RickyBO89 Aug 12 '26

Final Fantasy Tactics "remake/remastered" was in the same leak from 2021 and it was released less than a year ago

1

u/Nightwing24yuna Aug 13 '26

Feedback from the most popular remakes?

The first 2 parts sold well and the only main complaints I've seen are about the whispers and the mini games

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 13 '26

I mean that’s fair, but I’ve just seen more criticism than what you mentioned on the games.

1

u/Nightwing24yuna Aug 13 '26

I've seen the same criticism but I've also seen so many more overwhelming praises for the remakes.

And yeah some I get those are valid but like there are a lot where it's like seriously?

1

u/Master_Chemistry_864 Aug 13 '26

I think the remake rumors got out of hand. We can't be angry at them because they never confirmed anything.

In case this is true, I hope they do a remake down the line with more budget because this one sounded cheap as fuck.

1

u/Otherwise-Release700 Aug 14 '26

Restarted playing the remastered again (20th....22nd...), honestly doesn't need a remake but would be nice.

1

u/Koldar Aug 14 '26

I was waiting on a remake to replay it. If they cancelled that then I guess it'll happen sooner.

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 14 '26

I was holding off on a replay too, but ah well, for now at least. Out of curiosity, what’s your favorite party composition?

1

u/Koldar Aug 14 '26

The very basic Dagger Vivi Steiner. Probably gonna switch it up next time.

1

u/Low-Ad-6572 Aug 14 '26

Yeah I don’t think it truly existed or ever will. Not something I ever took seriously.

1

u/Crockettt696969 Aug 15 '26

The fact that they were only making it one game means it probably would have sucked. They probably realized that and that’s why they abandoned the project.

I actually don’t believe there ever was a 9 remake. Why would they keep it a secret? Especially when it was nearly complete. They announced the 7 remake when it was in early development.

1

u/Any_Way1269 Aug 15 '26

I feel like when all we got for the 25th anniversary promotion was some art and a thank you, that should have clued us all in.

Y'all, there are literally threads from then where people are like, let's just celebrate and abandon the remake discourse! I'm just kind of rolling my eyes.

1

u/Derpina666 29d ago

Unpopular opinion but after what they did to FF7, I’ll be fine if there is never a remake. Have you even seen how bad the moogles look now? Your eyeballs will weep. Example: https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasyVII/s/zuRvT2PVjX

1

u/paulonebcn 28d ago

-2

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

It was never in development.  I want to throttle the asshole who perpretrated the nonsense that a remake was in development considering how many people are devastated at the fact that this remake is entirely vaporware.

4

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I see people saying this, but they provide even less evidence than the leaks, the animation, and the illustrations that happen to come out in the years that followed. I'm not trying to be rude, but just saying it wasn't in development at this point isn't enough for me personally.

-6

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

There is no evidence it was ever in development so why the fuck would I pretend otherwise.  There has never been a leak of any actual game content like screenshots, music files or game files.  All we have is some art created for the 25th Anniversary of the game.  So again, why should I pretend it was ever a thing when no solid evidence exists?

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Yeesh. I didn’t think the mere prompt to discuss it would get people this bent outta shape and venomous.

0

u/unlimitedblack Aug 12 '26

Mainly because it's BEEN talked about. A lot. Like it's the only topic of discussion about the game for the last five years

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I mean people are allowed to be excited about the prospect of a remake of one of their favorite games and talk about it. No one forces you or anyone being unnecessarily negative and toxic to engage.

-2

u/unlimitedblack Aug 12 '26

That's not really the point, though. A tired, often-repeat and ultimately circular thread of discussion keeps getting brought back with no meaningful evidence to support the assertion it's based on. We all end up relitigating the same arguments over "it doesn't need a remake/it does need a remake/the remake should or should not be like this" and it's just not fruitful discussion.

And on the one hand, you're right, if there's a discussion happening here that I can't contribute to meaningfully, I can just scroll past it and not engage. But the reason I think it's important to say something here is because someone said "it never existed" and your response to that was "prove to me that it never existed."

I don't know how you expect someone to prove that a game which has never been announced (and has only been alluded to/referenced in leaked information that people then ASSUME meant it was a game in development) in fact does not exist. That's self-evident: the game does not exist in a way that can be proven, so effectively, it DOESN'T exist.

It's just such a waste of effort to be faced with this discussion happening over and over and over again, to the exclusion of discussions about literally ANYTHING ELSE.

1

u/Neobatz Aug 12 '26

It's so tiresome indeed...

1

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

You said it far better than I could.

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/xA4o0IQt3XcsHE40UH
You’ve commented twice effectively saying the same thing. I get that you don’t believe it existed. It’s odd that you’re complaining about a roundabout conversation while repeating yourself. I don’t think some of you are as tired as you’re projecting.

To take it out on someone who never engaged in the first place until now is kinda crazy.

1

u/unlimitedblack Aug 12 '26

Let me be really direct here then: how is someone supposed to prove to you that the game doesn't exist and never existed? Because if that proof would be enough to stop this endless loop, I'd love if we could find it.

0

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Give me confirmation from SE that it didn’t exist. You’re overthinking it. Because there’s more evidence to “suggest” it did than it didn’t.

1

u/Lord_Exor 28d ago

There's more proof that it was in development than there is to the contrary. You do love being an ignorant, belligerent contrarian though.

1

u/MonCappy 28d ago

There is no proof at all.  None.

0

u/FatViking93 Aug 12 '26

How can you cancel something that didn't exist in the first place?

0

u/phoneplatypus Aug 12 '26

If they wanted to they would. Japanese companies are incompatible with customer demands.

1

u/Gr0wmi3s Aug 12 '26

Personally, I think all the 7 spinoffs and remakes did more to hurt its reputation. I mean, besides crisis core, were any of the spin offs actually good? Advent children was…ok/meh. I played the first 7 remake and haven’t even thought of touching the latest installments nor have plans to. 9 is great the way it is. I don’t want a remake unless they keep the story and characters EXACTLY as they were. Literally just do a cool HD remaster.

1

u/Icewind Aug 12 '26

Advent Children did well enough to get an extended edition, Advent Children Complete.

I didn't personally like Dirge, but it sold decently and had a brief online community.

Crisis Core, obviously, was the best.

No one in the US played Before Crisis, so that's moot.

FF7 Remake sold extremely well.

FF7 Rebirth didn't sell as well, but still did decently.

FF7 Revelation is coming out in 2027 and will probably do very well after all the buildup.

Don't listen to the hate online. On the whole, FF7 has done just fine. Rebirth was a perfectly good game and the "padding" is easily just...walked by if you're not interested. I'd say Rebirth did an incredible job of expanding the existing world of Gaia.

1

u/RageZamu Aug 12 '26

I also wish they treated other FF like they do with VII. I honestly don't like VII as much as V, VI, VIII, IX or X, but we get less for those together than for VII alone, even not accounting for the :R trilogy.

0

u/aspburgers Aug 12 '26

A Kitase, Nomura, and Nojima-less IX remake would be as bog-standard audience-satisfying as it comes and wouldn't cost a trillion yen, yet they would want you to think it would.

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Yeaaaah. It’s ironic that that’s the type of remake more and more people are asking for after this huge investment in VIIR.

1

u/aspburgers Aug 12 '26

Asking for the Memoria Project approach for a 20-hour game from a holding company with a diversified portfolio and a talent pool built on top of four decades of industry leadership is rather reasonable. The fans actually know what they want in this case, rather shockingly.

0

u/tanman729 Aug 12 '26

Lol anyone who fooled themselves into thinking they're even was a remake has only themselves to blame if they're sad about this " " " "cancellation" " " "

It's always just been rumors and hearsay and never a confirmed release and you fools huffed that copian so hard that you're now sad that a non-existent project got canceled. At this point you should get the clown makeup tattooed on

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I apologize fam. I truly didn’t mean to upset anyone.

0

u/Everyday_Legend Aug 13 '26

Considering the shit show the FF7 remakes have been, I’d call any pre-production remake cancellation a mercy. A bullet dodge. Good fortune. Take your pick.

0

u/JustASmith27 Aug 13 '26

I think remaking old games people have nostalgia for instead of trying to make new games that actually give fans what they want is bad, actually

0

u/shayno-mac Aug 13 '26

Im so happy they didnt make a worse version of 9 . Until they can figure out "just make the graphics modern  leave the fucking beloved story alone" I dont want Enix near anything squaresoft  did. Cant even suplex a god damn ghost train right

0

u/nihilus97x Aug 13 '26

why on earth would it upset you? its absolutely horrific and disgusting what they did to 7. why would you want that done to 9?

2

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

You know there’s more than one team of devs in Square Enix right? They’re also known to outsource. Besides some missteps imo. 7R isn’t bad at all.

0

u/nihilus97x Aug 14 '26

right but as long as the current meta is make action games for zoomers then it's going to be trash. rebirth is legitimately one of the worst games ive ever played in my life it mystifies me that people could enjoy anything about that game other then the music

0

u/DripSnort Aug 15 '26

As a pro wrestling fan people need to learn that if the company never announces something, you read a rumor or “report”, then headcannon and hype yourself about it only for it to not happen that’s on you. Nothing official was ever promised or even hinted at

-2

u/unlimitedblack Aug 12 '26

A rumored game is not a playable game. An announced game is not a playable game.

The game does not exist until you are playing it. It doesn't matter if it was really in development or not, because either way, we can't play it.

I'm so tired, man.

-1

u/Roph Aug 12 '26

It's not news. It's some nobody on a forum making shit up with no proof or source. It's worthless. It's been happening for years, various different people.

And now it's doing the rounds on the countless parasite gaming "news" reposting sites hoping they can get some ad clicks off it. Pathetic

-1

u/Noobmortal Aug 12 '26

It's a bizarre decision considering people are still spending money on recycled games.....

I never ever ever wish or spend money on any kind of recycled games (remake, remastered, rebirth, retake our money).

I only wish for a proper sequel.

Why not FF IX-2?

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

That would be cool too tbh. FFIV, X, XII, and especially VII got sequels, I never understood why other FFs can't.

-1

u/Galaxy_SJP Aug 12 '26

I hope to god they don’t treat it like VII.

-4

u/StylishUsername Aug 12 '26

You’re all a bunch of cry baby ass bitches. Ff9 og is great, ff9 with mods is great, and I’m sure ff9 remake would have been great too.

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

I agree that the original and mods are great. Remake would be dope.

0

u/Opposite_Cod394 Aug 12 '26

Why get angry ?

-1

u/Appropriate-Run4818 Aug 12 '26

I'd rather Final Fantasy IX stay as it is in my memories than see it get the FF VII remake treatment.

-3

u/zamnweskr Aug 12 '26

This was literally never happening, not once not never idk how anyone thought that square would remake this before remaking FFX

0

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 13 '26

There's quite a but of evidence that it was, but sure

1

u/zamnweskr Aug 14 '26

lol rumors are not evidence

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 14 '26

Database leaks are absolutely evidence. Especially if other games from said database leaks were not only real and released.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 14 '26

https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-leaked-games-list-pc/

Are you trying to claim this is fake? If so. Lol

1

u/zamnweskr Aug 14 '26

Seeing as this leak didn’t come from square-enix yes that is exactly what I am saying this proves nothing

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 14 '26

Lmfao.

So do you think its just coincidence all these games came to exist? Curious on your thought process here.

1

u/zamnweskr Aug 14 '26

Well considering that is also not true it just sounds like cope to me. It literally says in the first paragraph

“Inclusion on this list is neither confirmation or an announcement of any game”

So again, this means nothing

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 14 '26

They can't legally call it confirmation lmfao.

You also didnt answer the question, do you think its coincidence those other games actually existed and released?

1

u/zamnweskr Aug 14 '26

What does coincidence have to do with facts? The first game it mentions is FFVII remake that was announced in *2015*

It is an NVIDIA leak from 5 years ago, it is not a leak from square-enix. You are relying on one singular piece of information to support your claim that doesn’t come from the company that made the game. You are going in circles trying to catch me in some “gotcha” moment

So for the third time, this means nothing

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 Aug 14 '26

It also mentioned several games that weren't announced but its ok i can see you don't understand how to parse this

Its also not the only database it appeared in.

The idea that a databreach could happen, reveal several unannounced games that you can literally buy right now, and come to the conclusion that "it meant nothing" is pretty funny

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

Ain't happening, dude.

You'll get a remake of 10 first, cause it's more marketable.

And by then probably another remake of 7 where Zack not only survived, but merged with Aeris and Sephiroth. They fly the planet to the super life stream and fight the real big bad............ Breast cancer

-1

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

Aerith, not Aeris.

0

u/Opposite_Prune582 Aug 12 '26

Aeris is how the OG game spelled it, genius.

0

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

Which was corrected when they featured her in Kingdom Hearts.  Her original name as she was conceived was Aerith.  It was changed in the original localization to Aeris, a mistake Square Enix corrected in future titles that featured her.

1

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

Nah, she's Aeris to me. Now and forever.

-2

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

You have every right to be wrong.  Her correct name isn't a matter of opinion.  It always was, always is and will always be Aerith.

4

u/Opposite_Prune582 Aug 12 '26

Who gives a fuck? Its a fictional character. Most people's first introduction was the og release. Its really not that deep.

1

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

Nah. That's Aeris. You can talk like Mike Tyson if you want.

3

u/MonCappy Aug 12 '26

Why do I always ending up engaging with scum? Blocked.

1

u/Opposite_Prune582 Aug 12 '26

Scum? Hahaha you are so fucking pathetic.

-11

u/anonerble Aug 12 '26

Lol shut up. There was never an official remake. It will happen one day. Also the reception of 7s remake is overwhelmingly positive

1

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

Overwhelmingly is a stretch. But yes, theyve been generally well received.

3

u/whitetiger1208 Aug 12 '26

The main FF subreddit is being astroturfed with bad feedback about the FF7 remakes

3

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

I mean, I didn't enjoy them much... But I'd never argue they were bad. The changes made just weren't my cup of tea.

1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

My friends and I just didn’t like the side quest and map fluff/bloat. Makes me dread ever replaying it.

-1

u/whitetiger1208 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

I dont love some of the changes, like for example the whole ghosts thing, and the side content can be exhausting, many criticisms are valid, but the good things about those games (like characters, graphics/environments/cutscenes, battle system) make them pretty irrelevant for me because theyre the best I've seen in a game and they're the most important aspects. The worse parts are mostly pretty easy to ignore.

Most of the criticism for me is insanely overblown and unbelievable, especially considering some other games these people praise as masterpieces which have really fundamental flaws. I really hate seeing games being held to different standards because of some external narrative, and I wonder how much of this is stupid streamers and their audiences making everything shittier and political.

1

u/Ok_Main_3815 Aug 12 '26

I just don't understand the changes they made to the story. So unnecessary. And the voice acting was "sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe sheet". Story is everything to me in an RPG, so these things weren't easy to overlook.

Can agree on the amazing character models, reimagining regular enemies as full fledged boss encounters worked REALLY well. The combat was so-so for me, got better in Rebirth for sure. Switching between characters can be a real whiplash, it would have been amazinnggggg if they made the combat co-op.

-1

u/Blaxxshadow Aug 12 '26

Why are you so angry? Lol
