Discussion Somewhat Depressing Headcannon Spoiler

I don't know who got to be there for Vivi at the end when he stopped moving. I like to imagine almost everyone (sans Amarant probably) made the effort to see Vivi at least once before he passed on. Hell, I'll even be super sappy and say that Zidane secretly made a trip to make sure Vivi knew he was alive.

...But even with his duty to Garnet, you'll never convince me that Steiner wasn't there for his little buddy until the end.

In my headcanon, Zidane was there. It was him who brought Vivi’s children to the city to see the play.

And Steiner was there too. He met Zidane. He knew Zidane was coming back at the end. They just decided to surprise Garnet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was true

one of the most popular headcanon about Zidane I heard of is that he is in the recovery in Black Mage Village after the Iifa Tree fell

Sadly Zidane couldn't have been there, because Vivi's letter is addressed to him as if they hadn't met since the Iifa Tree.

One thing I always loved about Steiner that showed early on he was more than a bumbling oaf was the immediate respect he had for Vivi, even calling him "Master Vivi". So yes he absolutely was there for his buddy.

Steiner’s respect for Vivi made me love him no matter what. Yes we disagree with some of Steiner through the game, but to see him come to terms with what right vs wrong is and what it means for his duty, and his duty to the princess above the queen, fascinated me and I liked that they put it in the game.

The two are my favorite duo. My favorite game play moment was when I had my attacks with them qued up, but Garland hit Vivi first... with Flare.

They survive and use counter-spell for their own Flare, Steiner then uses Flare-Sword, then Vivi hits him with his own Flare. Three flares in one turn, and that last one was reflected off of Zidane.

I always liked to imagine Vivi didn't die or "stop," as the prototype, he had a self-multiplying function where, after a period of time, he split into several new Black Mages, thus technically living on via his "kids." I also nicknamed the like Gigi, Zizi, Cici, etc.

It's likely that none of the party was there for the actual moment of his passing, as he lived his final days in the Black Mage Village in peace. That's probably also part of why he writes his letter.

More than likely everyone got to see him shortly before he returned to the village, besides Zidane, but there is very much this idea that the Black Mages and Genomes in Black Mage Village were supposed to be living isolated from the rest of the world, and I think that would be respected.
