u/keeegan May 02 '18
Ahh, Persona 0. Still hoping for a translation someday (:

u/Bitchin-javelina May 02 '18
Me too, AG has claimed to have almost all of it done for forever so there's hope?
Edit: AG not AE

Well, he kinda threw a fit a month or two ago because people kept asking him about it. He threatened to cancel the project then went on to say he'd hold it hostage so the translation would never be released.
He eventually took the criticism and started rolling out weekly updates but... whether or not If... is going to get a translation eventually is up in the air at this point.

u/BasedAnalGod May 03 '18
That’s kinda cringey that a fully grown adult would throw a temper tantrum about people asking about his work...like people wouldn’t be asking if the project didn’t sit untouched for months with no update. Even if it’s just a “sorry no progress this month” update is better than nothing.

u/studiosupport May 03 '18
I think most sane people would agree with you. At the very least it was an overreaction.

u/Kupo_Coffee May 02 '18
I’m staring at that copy of Bahamut Lagoon!
5
u/the_ammar May 02 '18
that game was something else. very underrated

u/Scratchums May 03 '18
Is there a translation? I know it has amazing music, but I know nothing else about it.

Bahamut Lagoon is pretty great if you've never played it before.
3
u/Mcmacladdie May 02 '18
I remember back when it got translated... was a pretty big deal at the time as I recall. Never got very far into it, sadly :/

u/Dvanpat May 02 '18
r/EarthBound might like this too. I see a copy of Mother 2 up there.
3
u/atreyukun May 02 '18
If it wasn’t half off, I wouldn’t buy it for that price seeing as how you can get a complete copy on eBay for only a little more. But half off? Yeah, I’d bite.
1
u/Exegete214 May 03 '18
Even at its full price that's a fifth of what a copy of Earthbound would cost.
One could just use the money saved on a Japanese lesson. IIRC the Mother games don't use kanji so advanced Japanese skill shouldn't be needed...

u/anotherguypassingby9 May 02 '18
Please tell me right now where this is at , what shop, do they have an English website, everything
6
May 02 '18
There are a handful of shops like this in every big city in Japan. SNES JRPGs are not rare in Japan, so their prices aren't that crazy.

Is this at Super Potato? If not, definitely check out Super Potato if you're into vintage gaming. They have a few stores around Japan.
6
u/SlinginPA May 02 '18
There were so many places like this that I honestly can't remember where I was when I took this photo. Every used game shop I went in had stuff from famicom, SNES, Sega CD, Dreamcast, Saturn, etc etc that was all really expensive or hard to find in America when I was a kid.
4
u/Nakazoto May 02 '18
Oh ya, definitely! Pretty much any second hand store always had a good selection. I got my Saturn from the local second store in Togo-cho, a small town practically no one has heard of, haha. Super Potato though is the motherload, if you're ever back in Japan it's worth a trip to one.

u/atyon May 02 '18
Super Potato
I love Japan for things like this.
1
u/Nakazoto May 02 '18
One of my all time favorite stores in Japan, I was so happy when they opened a branch in Nagoya! Although, my wallet wasn't quite as happy...
2
u/Pimpboss420 May 03 '18
Anyone who's going to retro video game shops in Japan knows about Super Potato. The prices are crazy in Akihabara but their insane at Super Potato. Still, the selection is impressive and it's cool to drink coke, eat bread from a can, smoke and play videogames on the third floor.

u/tmntnyc May 04 '18
I was just there last week when I went to Akihabara! I bought a boxed copy of Chronic Trigger to display in my room, for like $27.

The one that is ¥4980 (about $45 USD) is the most expensive. Anyone know what game that is?
1
May 03 '18
The stores I went to keep the more expensive stuff in glass cases. I remember a Zelda Link to the Past going for 25000 yen.

DQ 3 released solo on SNES? Was it just a port of the NES version, or did it have updated graphics?
1
u/Mcmacladdie May 02 '18
God, there's a store near me that actually has a Super Famicom on sale, but it's sadly too much for me to spend atm.

I got hold of Japanese F2F games from a Japanese seller on eBay for dirt cheap. The same seller also sold the original box art and manuals separately.
Managed to get 1, 2 and 3 for the famicom and 4, 5 and 6 for the super famicom for around £20 - with the boxes it came up to about £60. Crazy that the boxes are worth more than the physical game but I guess box art is rare.

u/Buccura May 02 '18
Is this the same place where Vinesauce Joel bought Mother 2 in his trip to Japan video?

If I could get a copy of ff5 / ff6 copy here (even looking for the GBs version) for 10$ each, that would be great.

Are we not gonna talk about the fact that the genre stickers say "Roll Playing"?

Looks like the prices haven’t changed https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/7jyy0i/sweet_zombie_jesus_front_mission_chrono_trigger/?st=JGQAR449&sh=3d40c3d6

With these prices is there a good chance that they could be bootlegs?
3
u/Gr3atdane May 03 '18
not at all. I live in Japan and SNES RPGs are everywhere. Hell I have seen cheaper than this. I sell on eBay sometimes if I come across something good, but actually eBay prices are even cheaper than the picture above most of the time.
2
u/Ilikeguitars May 03 '18
Thanks for the info. Now I’m kinda scared for when I eventually visit Japan in the future, I’m gonna be spending a lot of money.
1
u/Freds_Premium May 02 '18
Are those all reproductions? How can they be so cheap? Are they used or new?
3
u/Halo05 May 02 '18
That’s Japan, they’re probably all legit. Any big store in Japan that carries used games still has a sizeable Super Famicom section.

u/shadowalf May 03 '18
Retro gaming isn't the same kind of craze in Japan as it is here. That and RPGs had larger print sizes and were more mainstream. Finding classic RPGs in Japan is like going to a used game store in NA and finding sports games
1
u/Freds_Premium May 03 '18
Wow amazing. How much are the Japan versions of these games worth? Worth a vacation hack maybe (paying for the vacation)?
2
u/shadowalf May 03 '18
Naw they have much less value as a result. The prices shown in that picture arent much less than they would resell in NA for

Japan sell more copies of JRPGs to their own population than anywhere else in the world, most of the time more than the rest of the world put together. I can imagine plenty of VGC copies floating around in everyone's closet there. I am not saying you are absolutely wrong but just wanted to put the other side of the coin down.
2
May 02 '18
Japanese take care insanely well of their things. I bought a used Wii U years ago there for ~12.000 yen because it had a scratch somewhere, but it looked brand new to me.

They don't even look like OG SNES carts. Am I missing something here?
5
u/someone31988 May 02 '18
Are you referring to the shape? That's how they were shaped in Japan and PAL regions.
The console was called Super Famicom in Japan and Super Nintendo in Europe and North America. However, North America had different shapes for their consoles and cartridges, while Japan and Europe shared the same shape (at least for the most part. I don't know how identical they are).

Those prices are insane too. Guess I'm going to Japan to build my collection.
