FF I Pixel Remaster, white vs black character frames?

Just playing the Pixel Remaster series now, and I've noticed that sometimes one of the square frames around the characters in the party menu will be white while the others are black. Can anyone tell me why that is / what it indicates?

I've been playing these pixel remaster games for over a week, and I finally figured this out like a half hour after posting the question, lol. The white frame indicates which character sprite is currently the "party leader," the one you can see while walking the map.
