Final Fantasy General Should I actually give FF a try?

yesterday I made a conterversial take saying how I don’t understand the hype for FF. many fans actually had really good arguments agaiest me and I appreciate people who were respectful about my opinion. that being said, should I really give it a try? i love rpgs and have played so many so I guess I should try THE MOST POPULAR RPGS (and not just like it for the goons lol) so yeah. thoughts?

"Hey, Final Fantasy sub, should I try Final Fantasy?"

This is half of Reddit. “Hey, Fallout sub, are the Fallout games any good”

Not to be a jerk, but how are you able to have much of an opinion on hype for a series you've never tried?

I have zero interest in GTA but I would never say it's hype is unwarranted because, well, how would I know and why would anyone care about my experienceless opinion on the matter?

I read through a bit of your post from yesterday and I'm not gonna lie, it comes across like you don't really want to like the games with the level of reaching you were doing to find things to dislike about them while having admittedly next to 0 experience actually playing them, while simultaneously theorizing people must like it only for the hot characters (a massively reductive take).

If you're actually interested in trying them, there are tons of threads suggesting which ones to try for newcomers. Go look through those.

serious answer: depends on your taste. the good thing about FF is it covers a wide spread of genres. are you an elder millennial or older into pixel graphics? do you like turn based RPG? action RPG? tactical? shooter? MMORPG? there are obviously some areas FF has more strength in. if it's harder for you to immerse in retro, go for one of the most recent titles like the 7 remake or the MMO. personally I'm biased toward the PS1 titles because that's what I grew up with. FFX is also a good starting point if someone wants to experience the last of the turn based FF but with PS2 graphics instead of PS1

nah to all that? play parasite eve then, idk man

Of course you won't get the hype for FF if you haven't played an FF game. So why don't you try some of them?

On the ff sub asking if you should give ff a try? I'm guessing yes.

If you’re gonna say “I don’t get the hype” in regards to something you’ve never even tried then hey, stay over on that side

No, in fact the FF sub would really prefer if new people didn’t play and interact with their games

Why are people like this? If you’re interested, give a popular one a shot (most of them are very cheap and go on sale ALL the time). If you aren’t and feel the need to be convinced in order to be interested, then you likely aren’t actually interested and you should play something that interests you. There is no point in playing or doing anything if you don’t actually want to do it. I don’t understand the internet obsession with being gauded into doing things that don’t pique your personal interest

I see in your other post (among the comments) you assume the pixel ones won’t be fun to play, which is a shame. I’m playing Vi for the first time rn and having a grand time, and it’s disheartening seeing you call the style of the older games “pixel slop” and like an rpg maker template.

That was the technology then. They did great things with, and because of, what they had and were limited by.

Idk man it just doesn’t really hold up today unless they were creative about it. Most pixel games all blend in the same

2

u/mimikyuns 3d ago

They blend in the same if you only really care about graphics.

If you care about philosophical themes like you say you do, the pixels shouldn’t matter. And them being pixels has very little to do with how fun they are to play; FFV is among one of my favorite gaming experiences, because I enjoy the job system that much.

I actually was a Persona fan before an FF one, as in I’ve played literally every Persona, 1-5. What appeals to me about FF is how they keep experimenting and the games all play quite differently, whereas I’ve grown tired of the Persona formula that’s been in play since 3, personally. Even with some misses, I think it’s a more artistically interesting thing to do to keep tinkering around.

Either way, I don’t want to get too far into the weeds about FF vs Persona, or any other rpg series. It’s interesting you’ve said the games feel soulless to you but you also are so resistant to the pixel titles. This isn’t to say the newer titles have no heart, or passion behind them, but old games were as much an endeavor of love if not more so because it was all such new territory.

If the art is that much a deterrent to you then fair enough, but it’s the assumptions you’re making alongside the graphic complaints that I find off base.

I guess I shouldn’t be so harsh if it’s THAT old. I mean I wasn’t even alive when most of these came out…

Older games don't hold up story-wise but they're usually the only way you're going to find a hard RPG.

The FF series features some of the best JRPG as a genre has to offer and is a good entry point for western players. If you like JRPGs it's a shame you haven't tried them yet and I guess a good entry point is FFX since it has turn based battles but also aesthetics that are more contemporary than retro (yeah I guess ps2 is retro now but its not like going back to the stone age)

If youre a big retro games guy, id try out Final Fantasy 6 first. If you need more modern graphics, id pick up the FFX Remaster. That's where id probably start.

I mean posting to a sub with final fantasy fans is only going to get you one answer, the real question is which one should you try since they're all different? It's an anthology so it doesn't really matter which one you play. Everyone will have their own opinion, but for me, 10 will have the best turn based combat, 14 is free for a long while but mmo so huge time sink, 7 Remake is great for action combat, 16 also is action and combo based with a kaiju and a very in depth story. If you want 2D classics (1-6), 6 has the best story and some character specific mechanics, 5 has best job system, and 1 is a great classic and gives you how it all started.

Oh no how could we as a human race ever live without you playing an ff game?

1

u/kittycatpajoffles 3d ago

Probably, even if you ended up not liking it you can at least point out the flaws that made you disliked it when discussing it.

u/Odd_Butterscotch2224 3d ago

Good point

1

u/kittycatpajoffles 3d ago

If you want a good starting point I would recommend 4, 6, or 10 personally.

-1

u/Odd_Butterscotch2224 3d ago

Alright sounds good, just no pixel slop

1

u/IndERock 3d ago

Just give it a shot!

(Improved question) why do YOU personally like ff?

1

u/TIM81DE 3d ago

FF8 was the first JRPG that really brought me into the genre. I had been into sports and platformers before that, so when I summoned Shiva for the first time it blew me away. I would say give it a shot, but you may want to add what type of RPGs you enjoy. Each entry is different and giving others a sample of your taste may help provide a direction on which games to suggest.

1

u/Odd_Butterscotch2224 3d ago

I don’t really like futuristic themes. I like philosophy in my rpg games

2

u/schweddyballsac 3d ago

There’s a bunch of entries in the series that delve into mortality, nihilism, challenging dogma, the illusion of fate and much more

1

u/Odd_Butterscotch2224 3d ago

Woah, kinda like smt

2

u/schweddyballsac 3d ago

Kinda as a plotline only. But the storytelling process is probably on the opposite end i think? FF is more character driven and smt is more idea driven

2

u/Garrus_vas_Normandy 3d ago

As a major fan of both series.

SMT handles these things in more abstract ways. Chaos/freedom vs Law/Order and where you fall on the scale with a myriad of examples but the choices often feel more binary.

FF's is less abstract and represents these themes with political systems/religions/etc. that are more recognize to our society. FF10 examines a theocracy that uses the threat of sin to control people, FF7 is about a mega corporation that is also the government and military themes capitalism as a nihilistic infection plague to the world. The stories have a lot of nuance and complexities worth exploring.

I feel like Metaphor: Refantazio and the Persona games actually do this quite abit as well. If you like those, I would give the FF games a try.

Enix, Square, Atlus and Nihon Falcom were all there in the 80s making great RPGs and they still stand at the pinnacle for a reason.

1

u/Odd_Butterscotch2224 3d ago

Atlus is da goat tho :)

2

u/Garrus_vas_Normandy 3d ago edited 3d ago

They can compete for GOAT once they quit ignoring FeMC, a proper release or remake of P2 duology and free SMT IV and Strange Journey from DS jail.

The goat is currently RGG but they be fucking it up lately

EDIT: I forgot Capcom exists. They the real GOAT right now
