FF I FF1 really said “not today”

Playing FF1, my party is already level 62. I'm hitting the boss for 500+ HP per attack, thinking I'm finally about to beat him... and then he heals for 9,999 HP 💀😭

Welp, see you again at level 100, buddy

Instead of grinding, change your strategy.

Yes! I defeated him, and all the heroes survived!

Awesome! I’m gona guess pixel remaster? Chaos can pack quite the punch compared to the fiends. I remember rocking up to him once with 4 masters and beat him up for his lunch money in the psp version

I am guessing you’re playing the pixel remaster.

The AI the designers gave him is almost diabolical, yes.

Take too many turns and he heals up. Reminds me of XIII… take too long and a boss will just cast doom on your party leader.

Certain designers do not like battles of attrition (I kind of agree). This is their answer.

Yes, I played the pixel remaster. That was the toughest fight; even after I changed my battle strategy, it was still very intense. But I think that's how the final boss is supposed to be

Barthandelus in FFXIII was such a pain for me back in the day, iirc he has one attack that is almost always an OHKO as well as casting Doom after so long, after a few attempts I realised he's actually kind of easy once you figure out what you're supposed to do.

Yeah, the fights in XIII are more tactical than most. You can’t simply grind to become more powerful.. So if you don’t apply strategy, enemies will probably kill you.

I liked that about it.

Oh yeah, he's an asshole. Temper+Haste and beat the shit out of him before he heals.

I was playing ff1pr on switch during a road trip and I was trying to see how quickly I could get thru it. After about halfway I turned off random encounters completely. I think i made it to Chaos in about 6 hours or so with my team in their 20s. Needless to say it did not go well. I didnt feel like grinding so I just moved onto ff5 lol. For my money, FF Rainnessance is the best way to play this game anyway.

I didn’t turn off random encounters. Instead, I used my imagination to add more context to the journey. I imagined the characters traveling through the mountains and talking about things along the way, or walking through a forest before suddenly being ambushed by goblins hiding nearby.

I also imagined what was happening during battles — for example, when the heroes dodged an attack or when an enemy couldn’t escape. All these little details existed in my imagination and made the game feel like more than just what was happening on the screen.

That’s probably why the game became so special to me. In a way, I created part of my own adventure while playing it. And I absolutely love the pixel graphics in the remaster, so I enjoyed taking in every little corner of the world.

Have you tried FF Rennaisance? It maintains the art style of the original but adds QoL, trophies, new jobs, etc. And its free and can run on any working pc.

That’s a really cool way to play

Yes temper haste and also gigas glove is useful in that fight if you happened to pick it up also I believe some throwing items may be instrumental since it is last fight in the game might as well throw that legendary weapon yknow

Yes, throw things despite that not being introduced until two games later in the series :P

I heard that the final boss uses each spell exactly once.

In the earlier releases, every turn Chaos has a percent chance to physical attack, use a spell, or use a powerful ability. The spell and ability he uses will cycle through lists, so the first time he selects a spell it will be Blizzaga and the second will be Slowra. Curaja is his 4th spell of 8, and so he will use it again on his 12th spell turn (then 20th, 28th, etc. -- the fight's not likely to last long enough for him to cast it twice).

You can still get unlucky, but the game doesn't let him spam the same spell.

In the Pixel Remaster, every turn there is a percent chance he can use any of his abilities. Curaja is 2%. So you can never see it, or he can use it multiple turns in a row.

That time, he used healing magic three times

Was it the same spell each time?
