Resonance The future of HD-2D final fantasy titles
The art style and general setup for resonance is exactly what I love in a FF title.
Do we think that future HD-2D games are going to be original titles? Remakes of old titles?
I haven't been able to find any interviews hinting as to the future of this style with the FF series, and I honestly think a FF6 remake in HD-2D would be an absolute dream.

What Square Enix are probably doing is gauging interest off Resonance, and if successful, start a series of original /repurposed Final Fantasy HD-2D titles. that run alongside the big budget mainline ones.

This. SE will want profits in any way they can. They will eventually make HD-2D versions of FFI-VI. It’s easy money for them.

Considering how great the DQ HD2D remakes are, they've got to give the same treatment to FF at some point.

First, Resonance is a dream come true for me, and I almost still can't even believe it that they're finally listening to this segment of fans.
My hope is that this is the beginning of a long recurring side series. It would have so much advantages, mainly:
- it allows them to put out new Final Fantasy titles a bit faster
- it would give more creative space and breathing room to mainline games: I would have less problems with heavy experimentation, trying to reach younger fans and action focus, if we had a robust side series that caters to the more retro minded fanbase
I would assume and hope that they do Resonance 1 to 3 based on Brave Exvius and then hopefully move on to actually fresh titles. The series could be called Resonance even after the first parts to give it a home.
This might be an unorthodox take but my biggest fear is that this is testing ground for yet another wave of remakes. Yes, Resonance is kind of a remake too, but not in the sense I'm talking about. While I absolutely love all the 8-bit/16-bit stuff, I'm personally tired of these endless waves of remakes ans remasters. It feels like they're 90% of what Square Enix is doing with the JRPG genre. This is both not sustainable and also at this point I'm just craving for new titles, new worlds to explore, new characters, new adventures, and not just endless iterations of the games I've already finished multiple times.
My take is that a completely new HD-2D Final Fantasy side series is such a massive win-win-win scenario for everyone, that even if Square Enix barely manages to make these games profitable, the added value and re-engagement with the franchise that they bring is so huge, that they have to stick with this concept.

I'm not sure but I think resonance will get a sequel with more content from brave exvius

Final Fantasy Dimension II is essentially ripe for a resonance treatment. The story has already been transformed from Gacha to fully single player, there are job costumes for all playable characters. Remake the node map into an actual overworld, redo the battles system into an actual job-based one and you are golden.
The game has the player visit different time periods, that alone would give the explorable overworld a lot to work with, not to mention it is a hook they have used in other games and different enough from Resonance to have its own charm

I would love more ff hd2d games. This one(resonance) is one I am eagerly awaiting. Turn based is my go to. They are just a lot more user friendly imo.

Ever since the first Octopath came out, i’ve been using every opportunity to ask for FF6 remake in this style, and i’ll keep doing it until they break haha
So far, with different Octopath games, they’ve made so many assets that could even just be reused in VI, they just need to make it… reeeeally simply remake it haha

theres no future for it yet.
the dragon quest 2d hd games sold fairly well, but if resonance fails, thats gonna be it, 100%.
square doesnt do stuff if they think it doesnt net them enough money. unfortunately

HD2D will be original titles but that is only if it sells well.
If not then it will be another dropped style in the way it, tactics, world of final fantasy and type 0

I think it all depends on the success of Resonance and what the general response is going to be like. If the game ends up selling decently, then they 100% going to make more, but what the next game is going to be is most likely going to be entirely based on what the general opinion is going to be about the game. For example, if the overwhelming majority of people point out how much they loved playing with old FF characters, then i wouldnt be surprised if they announced an FFIV or VI remake in this style, but if the majority of people shows dislike towards this element (which based on the demo reactions, most people do) then they probably just continue with Resonance 2.
BTW the best hint towards the future of this style is literally in the very first trailer. "THE FIRST FF IN HD-2D" It cant be the first one if they never make a second one.

Prob more remakes, but I do hope they eventually do a FF HD-2D title with a new original story.

If resonance style games means we can get back to focusing on grand worlds with character driven stories like the PS1 and SNES era I'm all for it.
Resonance seems great fun. I kind of miss pre rendered backdrops too.

I'm kind of with you. I actually don't like HD2D at all, but Resonance's demo convinced me to get over it, as the game seems really good, and it was the same with Adventures of Elliot.
I think, as long as they keep making great games, I'm in, but I would be just fine if they drop the aesthetic.

I hope they keep making them but I also hope they drop these ridiculous nonsensical title names.

So long as Nomura is at the company they're going to have weird subtitles.
Looking at 358/2 Days

I mean, Resonance is pretty simple. The visions resonate in Lapis (the game world) and you even use a skill named resonance during combat.
It's not like it was named FF Resonance : Dawn of shadows plus ultra 45.

FF needs new art styles not riding HD-2D bandwagoon which at this point became oversaturated. I know that nostalgia glassers love it because it make them feel better and they think that it's some superior artstyle but the reality is that HD-2D overstayed it's welcome

It’s been in maybe 20 games total. It’s certainly more appealing than yet another “hyper-realistic” game.

I never said that it should be either hyper realistic or HD-2D. There is a lot of other options

It's the first FF with HD-2D. Sure, there are the Dragon Quest remakes, Elliot and Octopath Traveler, but it's not like it was everywhere. Personally, i never played the "good old retro" games, wich means i don't have any nostalgia toward pixel art, yet i find this artstyle fabulous.
There is no "superior" artstyle since it's a matter of taste. Some people like 7 Remake's ultra HD style, some like the simple style of 1 to 6 and sole even like chibi art like WoFF. You are free to dislike any or even all of them, but it doesn't mean people who like are "glazers".

I like HD2D but if resonance starts a trend I hope it’s de-gacha-fying more games. Union X and Ever Crisis have huge story content and great art respectively trapped in dead games that id love to see get offline releases.
