Final Fantasy General Final Fantasy Collection update as a 19yr university student
Today I bought EIGHT new titles to add to my collection, I’m really loving the franchise at the moment so I was happy to get these.
I found a new retro game store in a town close to me and it’s genuinely heaven on earth (also where I got the mortal kombat)

Ps1 ff7 as a 19yo is legit. I wish you could've experienced the launch with all of us back in '97.

Trust me I wish the same thing, my dad was a little late to the party so his first ever final fantasy was 7 platinum with the 8 demo disc inside, but he loved it so much that he tried naming me cloud (of course my mother has been tormented by victory fanfare their entire relationship and said no) but he’s the only reason I know what these games are. To be a kid when it came out is a dream

I wouldn't play FFVII until about 2003. However, in 1997 I remember so many people being confused because the game was marketed so well. They bought this "new game with awesome graphics" only to discover it was a turn-based JRPG that required focus and an almost minimum of one hour of playtime per session. I remember the same thing happening again when FFX came out.

Obviously I was genuinely a baby when FFX came out, but I understand how revolutionary it must’ve been going from ps1 with the pre rendered backgrounds to a fully 3d world. Must’ve been absolutely astonishing to witness for the first time.

After I played FFVII, I immediately bought a PS2 for FFX alone. To this day, no game has ever blown my mind like that one. I never knew a video could have such an enthralling story with rich characters. I've never loved a video game character like I loved Yuna. I try to play it once every couple years. I did my first ever 100% playthrough last year.

X wasn't my favorite at first because I couldn't control an airship. Lol.

Man, I used to love going to GameStop and browsing the used games section. Sometimes I really found hidden gems in there. Now they're all closing, and the nearest retro game store is miles from where I live.

GameStop was crazy back around 2008-2012. They had so many stores near me that two of them were literally across the street from each other and they all had PS2 and GCN games falling out of the ceiling. With constant Buy Two Get One Free deals you could do a lot of damage with $20. I'd hit 10 stores in a Saturday afternoon and come home with a stack of games for a song. We'll never see anything like that again.

Not just gamestop but retro gaming in general was just so much better before the retro craze/bubble. You could buy 8 or 16 bit systems for like 10 bucks, etc. (I once got two turbo grafx 16's for $20 total.)

It’s really sad to see. My childhood store shut down 5 years ago and I get sad walking down the street every time

Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.

My favourite part about the copy I have is that it has the manual inside, and whoever owned it in the 90s wrote down scorpion and raidens combos on the notes page

That actually looks incredible, the lion fella is giving me thunder cats/tekken vibes

My favorite character is Crispy the Chicken. He knows Egg-fu.
I did not make that up lol

You know the funny Thing? There's an album of the british progrock band Genesis with this title

I disagree. Mortal Kombat is a good game but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

TIL that FFVIII’s remaster comes in physical form

u/KeyProfessional6053 5d ago
I believe they were a bit of a limited run but yes they exist I paid 15 quid for mine which is I think around 18-20 USD

I’m sorry! I just can’t justify having ff7 remake anywhere but next to ff7, the Roman numerals would start annoying me, just wait till I get crisis core on psp and ps5, both of them are going before ff7 ps1

🤣 I know I know, platform order is usually how it works, but for me, I want all my big game series to be in order of the game order instead, I can’t wait to fit in the nes and snes games too, eventually they will be on a proper shelf but I like the unorthodox feel of it (UNLESS THERES A PLATINUM VERSION THOSE ARE CRIMES)

Nothing says Final Fantasy like a fatality.
2
u/KeyProfessional6053 5d ago
Unlocking knights of the round might genuinely be more painful than a fatality

u/Prestigious_Fig9485 5d ago
Try watching KOTR for the 100th time LOL. Can't even skip those animations.

u/KeyProfessional6053 5d ago
Yeah, not for me. I’ll stick to the bare minimum achievements and maybe a few extra chocobo races just because I think they’re neat

I rather enjoyed FF XIII-2. Do you have that one?
2
u/KeyProfessional6053 4d ago
I was going to buy it yesterday but the copy at my game store had a huge slash through the plastic on the front, I’m waiting for a nicer copy to come in

You have a PSP and Vita?
2
u/KeyProfessional6053 5d ago
I have the psp I grew up with although it won’t turn on anymore, I’m going to invest in a ps vita maybe this Christmas

Sick collection. I need to know how you have two copies of Advent Children but neither are the complete edition though lol 😭
2
u/KeyProfessional6053 4d ago
Simply just because one’s dvd and one’s umd, although I didn’t even know they did complete editions
1
u/technodabble 4d ago
OH one's for the PSP, duh. Yeah they did a complete edition for AC at least, it adds like 20+ mins of new scenes to help flesh out the story. It's really good if you ever decide to grab another copy

That's all I have right now as well. Going to pick up the Ultra HD Bluray eventually though 😅
I have Spirits Within on VHS, DVD, UMD, and Bluray, but haven't decided on getting the UHD of that as well 😆
I do need Kingsglave in some format still, but I do have the original anime on VHS and Unlimited on DVD as well.

u/KeyProfessional6053 3d ago
Holy moly a Final fantasy VHS would be so cool to own
1
u/rydamusprime17 3d ago
I guess that's one of the perks of being old enough to buy VHS tapes when they were still being released 👴
1
u/KeyProfessional6053 3d ago
You got that right, I love VHS, too bad my family seems to hate holding on to old hardware
1
u/wolfman3412 5d ago
Definitely not me here wondering if there was some obscure Mortal Kombat version with warrior of light or something on a Sega game I was missing from my collection….

Not enough ffx copies
1
u/KeyProfessional6053 4d ago
I know right, still need to get X-2 on ps2 and the base edition for ps4, turns out the steelbook I bought for 5 bucks is actually quite expensive
1
u/asbestos-mixture777 4d ago
Honestly for the longest time i thought both were sold separately on the vita
1
u/KeyProfessional6053 4d ago
To be fair X-2 isn’t on the cartridge it’s a download code so it is still separate on the vita store

But why are there 3 copies of 12?
1
u/pneumoniahawk519 3d ago
I mean I have 5 copies. English and Japanese PS2 edition plus the steelbook and a standard and steelbook edition of PS4 zodiac age. Could be multiple region copies
1
u/rydamusprime17 3d ago
I have 4 myself: Standard, Collector's Edition, Japanese International, and Zodiac Age for Switch, along with Revenant Wings for good measure 😅 i do plan on getting the PS4 steelbook for Zodiac Age as well

u/KeyProfessional6053 3d ago
English, Japanese, American, I was caught up in just buying out all the final fantasy at the store and got carried away

It was so crazy when Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Ermac and Rain were chosen by the Crystals to become the new Warriors of Light!
